Conference League 2nd Qualifying Round, 1st leg
* = seeded team
Winners go to ConfLQ3 (Champions and Main Paths)

July 23

Champions Path

KF Ballkani (KOS) v Ħamrun Spartans F.C. (MLT)* 0-0 (0-0)

In the first half Lindon Emërllahu sent a penalty wide of the left post,
while the Spartans didn't register even one shot either on or off
target all game long.

FC Differdange 03 (LUX) v FC Ordabasy (KAZ)* 1-0 (1-0)
(Jorginho 37')

Two Portuguese combined for Differdingen's somewhat surprising winner -
a rocket by Braga youth product Diogo Silva was parried with great
difficulty by Ordabasy's Belarusian keeper Ignatovich, and Jorginho
was on hand to bury the rebound. After three matches, the Kazakh
champions and current league leaders are still without a goal in Europe.

AC Virtus (SMR) v FC Flora (EST)* 0-0 (0-0)

Already the third match this season (one win, two draws) in which a team
from San Marino has collected coefficient points. They've only managed
to do that once before, thanks to Tre Fiori winning two and drawing one
in 2022/23.

July 24

Champions Path

FK Struga (MKD) v FC Pyunik (ARM)* 2-1 (1-1)
(Ibraimi 8' (pen), Spirovski 73'; Lucas Villela 23' (pen);
Red Cards: Vakulenko (Pyu) 60', Miftari (Str, ass. manager) 90'+5)

Struga were awarded an early penalty when Lanre Kehinde was clipped by
Taron Voskanyan, and Kehinde repaid the favour at the other end when on
occasion of a corner kick he elbowed Pyunik's Venezuelan winger José
Caraballo in the back of his head. In an ill-tempered match Pyunik's
Ukrainian captain Sergiy Vakulenko was sent off for a retaliatory kick
against Kehinde, and eleven against ten the Northern Macedonian
champions got the winner thanks to a great shot from distance by Stefan
Spirovski:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458189/25873-Record_2024_07_24_18_38_56_554.mp4

FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO)* v FK Dečić (MNE) 0-2 (0-0)
(Camaj 62', Striković 66')

Two quick goals gave the Montenegrin champions a rather surprising away
win in Georgia - Ilir Camaj headed in a cross by former USL Championship
left-back Luka Malešević, and minutes later Vuk Striković back-heeled in
a cross by Dečić's Argentinian winger Ian Puleio:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458191/25920-Record_2024_07_24_21_02_42_956.mp4

Main Path

Riga FC (LAT)* v WKS Śląsk Wrocław (POL) 1-0 (1-0)
(Niang 7')

A somewhat surprising loss for the Silesians in Latvia. Young Senegalese
striker Ousseynou Niang got the early winner by latching onto Mateusz
Żukowski's back-pass header which fell too short.

AEK FC (GRE)* v Inter Club d'Escaldes (AND) 4-3 (3-0)
(Ljubičić 6', García 20', Gaćinović 31', Moukoudi 53'; Vida 65' (og),
Andreu 78' (pen), Martínez 83')

Former Rapid Wien youth product Robert Ljubičić, Trinidadian
international Levi García, former Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Mijat
Gaćinović and Cameroonian centre-back Harold Moukoudi scored four easy
goals as this match went absolutely as expected... for an hour! Because
after that point everything went off the rails. Domagoj Vida (the phrase
'badly rendered Witcher character' still flashes across my mind every
time I see him play) under no pressure whatsoever headed a back pass
over his own keeper Strakosha; Inter keeper Adrià saved García's poorly
struck penalty; Strakosha with a bad touch caused a stupid penalty of
his own, converted by Sascha Andreu; and former Atlético Ottawa
midfielder Viti Martínez volleyed in from outside the box after the
Greek defence hadn't cleared a free-kick properly.

It's still inconceivable that AEK could lose this away in Andorra. But
just imagine if they did.

Cliftonville FC (NIR) v FK Auda (LAT)* 1-2 (1-1)
(Conlan 39'; Ogunniyi 32', Taiwo 77')

Nigerian youngster Abiodun stabbed home from close range after a corner
kick had created chaos in the Northern Irish box:
Loading Image...
Soon after Cliftonville centre-back Luke Conlan, a longtime former
League Two player, likewise volleyed in after a corner kick, but in
typical Northern Irish fashion late on they still conceded the winning
goal, Abdulrahman Taiwo beat Conlan one-on-one and chipped over
Cliftonville keeper Odumosu.

July 25
(the day in the European season with the most matches - 9x Europa League
and 40x Conference League)

Champions Path

KF Víkingur (ISL)* v KF Egnatia (ALB) 0-1 (0-1)
(Dramé 33')

The Albanian champions got the winner when journeyman French striker
Youba Dramé bowled over Víkingur keeper Ingvar Jónsson to somehow bundle
the ball over the line:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458226/26109-Record_2024_07_26_01_05_54_689.mp4

Main Path

[SC Dnipro-1 (UKR)* v Puskás Akadémia FC (HUN) 0-3 awarded]

Dnipro minus one lived up to their name and have withdrawn from both the
Ukrainian league and Europe due to financial difficulties, or rather
shenanigans surrounding their oligarch ownership.

The second time in 10 years that a team from Dnipro went bankrupt.
Reminder that their predecessor club reached the Europa League final in
2015.

KuPS (FIN)* v Tromsø IL (NOR) 0-1 (0-0)
(Nordås 54')

Tromsø got the winner when young striker Lasse Nordås volleyed in Ruben
Yttergård Jenssen's ball over the top at the second attempt.
Loading Image...

Sumqayıt FK (AZE) v Fehérvár FC (HUN)* 1-2 (1-1)
(Abdullazadə 20'; Christensen 39', Spandler 52';
Red Card: Khachayev (Sum) 32')

Sumqayıt, who have never won a game in Europe so far, took the lead
when Səbuhi Abdullazadə volleyed in the loose ball after a corner kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458196/26088-Record_2024_07_26_00_27_51_96.mp4
but the Hungarians turned the match around after Sumqayıt's Azeri-
Ukrainian centre-back Murad Khachayev had seen a second booking.
Fehérvár's Norwegian midfielder Tobias Christensen emphatically headed
in Bence Bedi's cross for the equaliser, and Bedi also delivered the
free-kick that Csaba Spandler nodded in at the far post for the winner.

Tampereen Ilves (FIN) v FK Austria Wien (AUT)* 2-1 (0-0)
(Haarala 51', Riski 88'; Lucas Galvão 90')

At the moment Austria's biggest challenge every season is to stay
financially afloat, so this wasn't even a big disappointment, let alone
a surprise. Ilves finally punished one of Austria's many defensive
blunders when Santeri Haarala stole the ball off Luxembourg
international Marvin Martins and tunnelled Samuel Şahin-Radlinger:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458197/26130-Record_2024_07_26_11_15_10_894.mp4
and former St. Pölten striker Roope Riski made it two when he punished
Matteo Meisl's lukewarm defending and rounded Şahin-Radlinger before
slotting in from a tight angle:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458197/26131-Record_2024_07_26_11_15_53_304.mp4
Austria's defenders at least did a better job at the other end of the
pitch, as after a corner kick Brazilian centre-back Lucas Galvão
collected the loose ball and fired in from the edge of the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458197/26132-Record_2024_07_26_11_16_29_63.mp4

FC Bruno's Magpies (GIB) v FC København (DEN)* 0-3 (0-1)
(Elyounoussi 30', Claesson 62', Froholdt 65')

No surprises here - Mohamed Elyounoussi ran onto Magnus Mattsson's
through ball, Victor Claesson tapped in a cross, also delivered by
Mattsson, and 18-year-old winger Victor Froholdt chipped in Denis
Vavro's long ball into the box.

FK Žalgiris (LTU)* v Pafos FC (CYP) 2-1 (2-0)
(Antal 17', 26'; Moutachy 62' (og))

Romanian forward Liviu Antal beat the Cypriot offside trap:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458199/26043-Record_2024_07_25_22_16_31_612.mp4
and also fired in after Pafos's Spanish centre-back David Goldar had
completely misjudged a long ball:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458199/26042-Record_2024_07_25_22_15_52_122.mp4
Those two were Žalgiris's only shots on goal though, and the Cypriot cup
winners deservedly pulled one back when Martinique international Joris
Moutachy deflected a header by Brazilian in the Mediterranean Jairo into
his own net.

FK Mladá Boleslav (CZE)* v FK TransINVEST (LTU) 2-0 (2-0)
(Ladra 27', Kušej 38')

The Czechs had few problems with TransINVEST (named after the freight
company that sponsors them), especially since the Lithuanian debutants
basically scored on themselves - TransINVEST's Serbian keeper Stefan
Čupić spilled a completely harmless long ball, and Tomáš Ladra tapped
into the empty net. Ladra also provided the through ball that Vasil
Kušej chipped in for the second.

FC Noah (ARM)* v Sliema Wanderers FC (MLT) 7-0 (3-0)
(Pinson 19', Gregório 28', 31', 56', Çinari 72', Alcino 73' (og),
Ferreira 90'+1)

A bit unexpected that this tie would bring the highest win of the
matchday. French journeyman striker Virgile Pinson curled in the opener,
then Portuguese forward Gonçalo Gregório scored a hat trick by first
stealing the ball off the Maltese defence followed by a header and a
tap-in. Albanian winger Eraldo Çinari made it five by collecting a
cross, cutting inside, and firing past the Wanderers' Bosnian keeper
Josip Bender: Loading Image...
and a minute later he made the exact same move, only this time the shot
was deflected in by Brazilian centre-back Gustavo Alcino:
Loading Image...
Hélder Ferreira, another of Noah's Portuguese contingent, finished the
rout with a solo run that wasn't particularly challenged by the Maltese
defence: Loading Image...

FC Iberia 1999 (GEO) v FK Partizani (ALB)* 2-0 (1-0)
(Nonikashvili 31' (pen), Sylla 57'; Red Card: Rrapaj (Par) 47')

The former Saburtalo, who had already eliminated Partizani in the First
Conference League Qualification Round two seasons ago, took the lead
from the spot after Partizani keeper Qirko had awkwardly tripped Gizo
Mamageishvili. The Albanians also weakened themselves when Arinaldo
Rapaj saw a second yellow, and against ten men Malian striker Cheikne
Sylla tapped in Iberia's second.

FC Milsami Orhei (MDA) v FC Astana (KAZ)* 1-1 (0-0)
(Lupano 90'; Gripshi 57')

Former Ballkani striker Nazmi Gripshi volleyed the Kazakhs into the lead
from a cut-back header by former Copenhagen defender Karlo Bartolec:
Loading Image...
but in the last minute the Moldovans got the equaliser through their
Belgian centre-back Danny Lupano who headed in a corner kick.

Go Ahead Eagles (NED)* v SK Brann (NOR) 0-0 (0-0)
(Red Card: Llansana (GoA) 90'+1)

In stoppage time Spanish-Dutch midfielder Enric Llansana pulled down
Ole Didrik Blomberg as last man and got sent off for DOGSO. One of those
red cards that I guess most people would argue you have to take.

AC Omonoia (CYP)* v FC Torpedo Kutaisi (GEO) 3-1 (1-0)
(Coulibaly 41', 78', Ewandro 84'; Yansané 75')

Senou Coulibaly headed in a corner kick to give the Cypriots the lead,
but Omonoia's Malian centre-back also was duped by Torpedo's Guinean
forward Momo Yansané for the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458205/26110-Record_2024_07_26_02_13_32_707.mp4
No matter, as Coulibaly soon afterwards stabbed in a free-kick, and
Brazilian in the Mediterranean Ewandro scored the third with a nice
shot from distance followed by an even nicer celebration:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458205/26112-Record_2024_07_26_02_16_55_987.mp4

Zirə FK (AZE) v FC DAC 1904 (SLK)* 4-0 (2-0)
(Utzig 29', Martins Júnior 31', Volkovi 51', 53')

A surprisingly clear win for the Azeri. Raphael Utzig bundled the ball
in after Dunajská Streda's Serbian keeper Aleksandar Popović had spilled
a shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458195/25999-Zaznam%20obrazovky%202024-07-25%20192933.mp4
and Utzig's Brazilian countryman Martins Júnior side-stepped Filip Kaša
and curled in the second:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458195/25997-Video%20bez%20nazvu_%20Vytvoreno%20pomoci%20aplikace%20Clipchamp%20(13).mp4
Georgian striker Davit Volkovi scored a brace early in the second half
by first heading in Qismət Alıyev's cross, then beating Popović with a
precise shot through the legs of DAC's Brazilian centre-back Mateus
Brunetti:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458195/26023-Zaznam%20obrazovky%202024-07-25%20204928.mp4

FC Zimbru Chișinău (MDA) v FC Ararat-Armenia (ARM)* 0-3 (0-1)
(Serobyan 23' (pen), Ocansey 74', 89')

Zimbru's Cameroonian midfielder Jessie Guera Djou brought down Ararat-
Armenia's Argentinian winger Alexis Rodríguez in the box to concede a
penalty converted by Artur Serobyan, and late on the Ghanaian substitute
Eric Ocansey, who has spent a good part of his career in the Belgian
league, added two more by punishing the Moldovans on the break.

The Armenian teams are playing a pretty good European season.

NK Olimpija Ljubljana (SLO)* v FC Polissya Zhytomyr (UKR) 2-0 (0-0)
(Florucz 56', Pinto 90'+2)

Young Austrian Raul Florucz cut inside and beat Polissya keeper
Volynets - formerly of defunct Dnipro - with a precise shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458207/26046-Record_2024_07_25_22_28_01_25.mp4
and in stoppage time the Ukrainian debutants conceded a second when
the Portuguese substitute Diogo Pinto chested down a cross by Olimpija's
Lithuanian right-back Justas Lasickas and volleyed in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458207/26047-Record_2024_07_25_22_28_49_188.mp4

Djurgårdens IF (SWE)* v FC Progrès Niederkorn (LUX) 3-0 (2-0)
(Wikheim 21', Hümmet 27', 61')

Gustav Wikheim fired in a low shot from 25 metres that Progrès's young
keeper Eldin Latik could probably have kept out, and Deniz Hümmet twice
tapped in from close range, once from Oskar Fallenius's low cross, and
once after Latik had spilled a shot, also by Fallenius:

F91 Diddeleng (LUX)* v BK Häcken (SWE) 2-6 (2-4)
(Hadji 32' (pen), 44' (pen); Inoussa 6', Layouni 21', 45'+1,
Youssef 35', 60', Hrstić 88')

Despite Samir Hadji scoring twice from the spot, the other Swedish-
Luxembourgish tie also ended with an easy win for the former. Zeidane
Inoussa and Amor Layouni cut through the Luxembourg defence like butter,
Layouni's Tunisian countryman scored with a free-kick from way out that
Düdelingen's French keeper Didier Desprez could have done better with:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458210/26055-Record_2024_07_25_22_42_45_691.mp4
and Layouni scored his second by volleying home a loose ball from close
range. After the break Youssef likewise tapped in his second of the
match, and late on Serbian youngster Srđan Hrstić added a sixth on the
break.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva FC (ISR)* v PFC Cherno More Varna (BUL) 0-0 (0-0)

It was a bit strange that this was played in Lovech, in Bulgaria. The
biggest chance of the game came after just two minutes when Guy Badash
hit the woodwork for Be'er Sheva.

Floriana FC (MLT) v Vitória SC (POR)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Jota 78')

The Portuguese favourites from Guimarães had to wait for a long time
until they found the breakthrough on Malta, Jota stabbed home a nice
assist by Venezuelan forward Jesús Ramírez:
Loading Image...

FC Baník Ostrava (CZE)* v FC Urartu (ARM) 5-1 (3-0)
(Ewerton 15', Boula 22', Buchta 26', Prekop 61', Klíma 82' (pen);
Tarakhchyan 90'+4; Red Card: Margaryan (Ura) 78')

OK, so not all Armenian teams had a successful matchday. Ewerton, a
mainstay in the Slovakian and Czech leagues for many years, fired in the
loose ball after Urartu keeper Ghazaryan had parried Erik Prekop's shot,
and the Brazilian then provided the assist for Jiří Boula to score
Baník's second. Ewerton also provided the cross that David Buchta
volleyed in just minutes later. In the second half Prekop shouldered in
a cross by Ghanaian left-back Patrick Kpozo, formerly of Sheriff
Tiraspol, and Jiří Klima despatched a penalty awarded for Erik
Simonyan's clumsy tackle against Matúš Rusnak. Despite having been
reduced to ten for Zhirayr Margaryan's reckless tackle against Michal
Frydrych, Urartu at least got a consolation goal in the last minute of
injury time when Gevorg Tarakhchyan fired Mikayel Mirzoyan's through
ball past Baník keeper Jakub Markovič.

FC Zürich (SUI)* v Shelbourne FC (IRL) 3-0 (2-0)
(Mathew 1', Marchesano 29', 58')

The Swiss needed just 27 seconds to go in front, Stuttgart loanee Juan
José Perea sent a weighted cross towards Ifeanyi Mathew that the
Nigerian volleyed in:
Loading Image...
Mathew also provided the through ball that Antonio Marchesano ran onto
to make it two, and against harmless Irish the Ticinese also scored a
third by sliding into Mirlind Kryeziu's cross:

Brøndby IF (DEN)* v KF Llapi (KOS) 6-0 (4-0)
(Suzuki 16', Omoijuanfo 20', Bundgaard 24', Nartey 40',
Kvistgaarden 88', Schwartau 90')

Six different goalscorers in this rout. Young Japanese international
striker Yuito Suzuki slotted in Sean Klaiber's assist, Ohi Omoijuanfo
tapped in a centre by his Norwegian countryman Sebastian Sebulonsen, and
youngster Filip Bundgaard likewise was left completely alone by the
overwhelmed Kosovar defence to head in a cross by veteran Daniel Wass.
18-year-old Noah Nartey made it four with a precise shot through the
legs of Llapi defender Muhamed Useini, and late on two substitutes added
two more - Mathias Kvistgaarden curled one in from the edge of the box
and Oscar Schwartau, just 18 years old as well, was given a ton of space
in the box to fire past Llapi keeper Avdyli.

Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR)* v Sabah FK (AZE) 0-3 (0-0)
(Šafranko 61', Sekidika 78', Əliyev 88')

Maccabi played this in Kisvárda in Eastern Hungary, and suffered a
surprisingly heavy defeat against the Azeri. Slovakian forward Pavol
Šafranko headed in a free-kick by the substitute Namiq Ələsgərov (love
those ə's), former Galatasaray transfer flop Jesse Sekidika took the
Israeli defence on by himself and fired a low shot past Haifa keeper
Keouf, and Azerbaijan Under-21 international Xəyal Əliyev finished off
a one-two with German journeyman Joy-Lance Mickels with a nice curler:
Loading Image...

FC CSKA 1948 Sofia (BUL) v FK Budućnost Podgorica (MNE)* 1-0 (1-0)
(Karagaren 44')

Birsent Karagaren headed in Radoslav Kirilov's cross for the sole goal.

FC CFR 1907 Cluj (ROM)* v FC Neman Grodno (BLR) 0-0 (0-0)

The Romanians couldn't find the breakthrough and surely expected better
against the Belarusian underdogs.

İstanbul Başakşehir FK (TUR)* v SP La Fiorita (SMR) 6-1 (4-0)
(Özcan 5', Davidson 13', João Figueiredo 29', 49', Kemen 43',
Piątek 71'; Greco 58')

No surprises here as the gulf in class was considerable, but at least
the Sammarinese managed to score a nice consolation goal through their
left-back Nicola Greco.

NK Osijek (CRO)* v FCI Levadia (EST) 5-1 (4-1)
(Miérez 9', 18', 27', Renan Guedes 34', Bukvić 68'; Yakovlev 8')

The Estonians used the no offside for throw-ins rule to open the score:
Loading Image...
but as it turned out that goal was only a minor blip for the Croatians
on their way to a comfortable win. Argentine forward Ramón Miérez
beat Levadia's hapless Malian defender Bourama Fomba to a long ball:
Loading Image...
punished a terrible back pass by Slovenian midfielder Til Mavretič:
Loading Image...
and completed his hat trick by once again leaving a Levadia defender on
his backside, this time Brazilian centre-back Heitar:
Loading Image...
Levadia keeper Karl Vallner then let Renan Guedes's shot go straight
through him, and in the second half the young substitute Domagoj Bukvić
once more took advantage of a lost ball by the Estonians and side-
stepped Fomba's feeble challenge to score the fifth:

KAA Gent (BEL)* v Víkingur (FAR) 4-1 (1-1)
(Hong 25', 88', Kums 59', De Sart 68' (pen); Nielsen 13')

The Faroese took the surprise lead after what else but a corner kick,
but Hong Hyun-seok, one of LASK's standout performers in the 2021/22
Austrian season, soon got the equaliser by rifling in a loose ball
in the box: Loading Image...
Another poor clearance by Víkingur led to a quick passing play at the
end of which Sven Kums slotted in from near the penalty spot:
Loading Image...
and Julien De Sart made it three from the spot after Olaf Bárðarson had
clipped Gent's Japanese winger Daisuke Yokota from behind. Late on
a dreadful mistake by Víkingur keeper Bárður á Reynatrøð gifted Hong his
second: Loading Image...

FC St. Gallen 1879 (SUI)* v FC Tobol (KAZ) 4-1 (2-1)
(Stevanović 35', Akolo 39', Toma 77', Vallçi 90'+7; Vallçi 28' (og))

This match followed a similar path to the one above. The Kazakhs went
in front when St. Gallen's Austrian centre-back Albert Vallçi deflected
Igor Ivanović's shot past his own keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi (both have
a Salzburg past): Loading Image...
but Serbian youngster Mihailo Stevanović soon headed in the equaliser
after a corner kick. Congolese international Chadrac Akolo tapped in
Isaac Schmidt's centre to give St. Gallen the lead, and the Swiss put
the result beyond doubt late in the second half - Bastien Toma beat
Tobol keeper Pokatilov from a tight angle:
Loading Image...
and in stoppage time Vallçi made amends for his earlier mishap by
heading in another corner.

FK Radnički 1923 (SRB) v FK Mornar Bar (MNE)* 1-0 (0-0)
(Aleksić 72')

In a match between two European debutants this season the Serbians from
Kragujevac got the winner thanks to a van Persie-like header by 18-year-
old Milan Aleksić:
Loading Image...

Paksi FC (HUN) v AEK Larnaca FC (CYP)* 3-0 (1-0)
(Haraszti 17', Tóth 61', Ötvös 74')

Paks appear to have recovered well from their ignominious Europa League
elimination at the hands of a Romanian 2nd division side, and they left
the Cypriots little chance. Zsolt Haraszti fired them into the lead with
a sumptuous shot from a tight angle:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458216/26060-Record_2024_07_25_22_53_43_319.mp4
Barna Tóth caught the Larnaca defence napping to make it two:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458216/26061-Record_2024_07_25_22_54_49_858.mp4
and new signing Bence Ötvös volleyed into the gaping net after Larnaca's
new Serbian keeper Zlatan Alomerović had awkwardly slapped away Balint
Vécsei' direct corner kick.

Something to note about Paks - their entire squad is Hungarian, a rarity
these days.

NK Maribor (SLO) v CS Universitatea Craiova (ROM)* 2-0 (0-0)
(J. Repas 57', Jakupović 88'; Red Card: Maldonado (Uni) 31')

Craiova's Honduran centre-back Denil Maldonado was sent off for pulling
back Étienne Beugré as last man, and the Slovenians capitalized on their
numerical advantage in the second half. Žiga Repas provided the through
ball that his older brother Jan slotted past Craiova keeper Popescu to
break he deadlock: Loading Image...
and late on former Sturm Graz flop Arnel Jakupović, who has carved out
a nice career for himself in Slovenia, headed in the second from a cross
by Maribor captin Martin Milec.

KF Valur (ISL) v St Mirren FC (SCO)* 0-0 (0-0)
(Red Card: Jóhannsson 81')

St Mirren's return to Europe after 37 years wasn't exactly a dazzling
affair even though they had more of the match, and played the last ten
minutes with the man advantage as former USNT striker Aron
Jóhannsson, 33 by now, eight minutes after coming on as a makeshift
defender had brought down Kenya international Jonah Ayunga as last man.

St Patrick's Athletic FC (IRL) v FC Vaduz (LIE)* 3-1 (2-0)
(Mulraney 6', 17', Redmond 77'; Del Toro 65')

St Pat's quickly got a two-goal lead as former Atlanta United player
Jake Mulraney scored with a lovely free-kick and with an angled shot
from an assist by erstwhile Barnsley midfielder Romal Palmer. The
Liechtenstein Cup winners (it was close last year, they needed extra
time against Eschen-Mauren in the quarterfinal) pulled one back through
Danilo Del Toro after a goalmouth scramble, but Saints captain Joe
Redmond headed in Chris Forrester's free-kick to restore the Irish
advantage.

Legia Warszawa (POL)* v Caernarfon Town FC (WAL) 6-0 (2-0)
(Gual 22', 48', 53', McMullan 44' (og), Kramer 71', Gonçalves 90'+3)

No surprises here either, and a bit of a shame that the Welsh debutants
couldn't even enjoy the atmosphere since Legia had to play this behind
closed doors, a punishment dished out for one of their regular crowd
problems. Caernarfon's Northern Irish keeper McMullan, their shoot-out
hero in the previous round, got egg on his face when he failed to deal
with Nagoya Grampus loanee Ryoya Morishita's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458229/26082-Record_2024_07_26_00_17_41_271.mp4
Legia's Spanish forward Mark Gual scored an easy hat trick, and his
Slovenian strike partner Blaž Kramer first missed a penalty but three
minutes later slotted home regardless. In stoppage time Portuguese
midfielder Claude Gonçalves, freshly signed from Ludogorets, made it six
with a great shot into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458229/26087-Record_2024_07_26_00_23_43_48.mp4

HNK Hajduk Split (CRO)* v HB (FAR) 2-0 (2-0)
(Uremović 19', Livaja 30' (pen))

The Croatians were yet without their new marquee signing Ivan Rakitić -
new Hajduk coach Gennaro Gattuso has already put his foot down and
questioned his match fitness - but against harmless Faroese that didn't
really matter. Filip Uremović nodded in after Anthony Kalik had headed
on Marko Capan's corner kick, and Marko Livaja made it two from the spot
after Danish midfielder Sammy Skytte had pulled back Kalik in the box.

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH)* v NK Bravo (SLO) 0-1 (0-1)
(Ivanšek 16')

The Slovenian debutants had barely made it past Welsh opposition in the
previous round, but they acquitted themselves much better in the
Herzegovinian capital. Youngster Matic Ivanšek got the winning goal by
stabbing in Gašper Jovan's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458231/26078-Record_2024_07_26_00_06_21_226.mp4

UMF Stjarnan (ISL)* v Paide Linnameeskond (EST) 2-1 (1-0)
(Atlason 24', 73'; Kristal 55')

Once again the currently lowest-ranked Icelandic team in Europe were the
only ones to win their home game. Emil Atlason headed in a corner kick
and also collected Heiðar Ægisson's cross before turning 360 degrees
and firing past Paide's Gambian keeper Ebrima Jarju:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458232/26077-Record_2024_07_26_00_02_57_478.mp4
In between those two goals 16-year-old Patrik Kristal, the youngest
player to ever feature in the Estonian League, despatched a handball
penalty.

FK Sarajevo (BIH) v FC Spartak Trnava (SLK)* 0-0 (0-0)

The Bosnians had the way better chances, but three times they didn't
manage to score into an empty net:

Breiðablik (ISL)* v KF Drita (KOS) 1-2 (0-2)
(Þorvaldsson 71'; Manaj 3', Tusha 23'; Red Card: Krasniqi (Dri) 89')

The Kosovars took an early lead when Breiðablik's defence completely
forgot about Arb Manaj in the box:
Loading Image...
and Veton Tusha a bit later made it two on the break. The Icelanders at
least pulled one back through Rosenborg loanee Ísak Þorvaldsson who
converted an assist by Breiðablik captain Höskuldur Gunnlaugsson:
Loading Image...
Late on Drita were reduced to ten when their right-back Besnik Krasniqi
saw a second yellow, and they had chances to equalise but in stoppage
time Drita keeper Faton Maloku kept out Gunnlaugsson's free-kick with an
excellent save.

I'm not a hundred percent sure, but this might have been unprecedented:
the four Icelandic teams - Víkingur, Valur, Stjarnan, and Breiðablik -
all played their Conference League qualifiers at the same time in the
greater Reykjavík area, with the four venues roughly within five
kilometres of each other (Hlíðarendi and Víkingsvöllur in Reykjavík
proper, Kópavogsvöllur in Kópavogur, and Stjörnuvöllur in Garðabær).
https://maps.app.goo.gl/8Jqx3VzfbESKzoVN8
UEFA usually don't allow that sort of thing for security reasons, but I
guess Icelandic football fans are peaceful enough.

Conference League 2nd Qualifying Round, 2nd leg
* = seeded team
Teams in CAPITALS (except DAC and HB) go to ConfLQ3 (Champions and Main
Path)

Fewer upsets and surprises in this round compared to previous seasons is
my impression.

Champions Path

FC FLORA (EST)* v AC Virtus (SMR) 5-2 aet (1-0, 2-2), 5-2 on aggregate
(Lepik 4' (pen), Sappinen 77' (pen), Alliku 92', 97', Kreida 120';
Benincasa 68', Mema 88'; Red Card: Lukka (Flo) 48')

Just 120 seconds in Virtus's a bit undersized keeper Alex Passaniti
floored Tony Varjund in the box, and one might have thought the early
penalty would be a sign how this match would go, especially as soon
after Mark Anders Lepik also hit the crossbar with a header. But things
went south for the Estonian champions when left-back Marco Lukka was
sent off with a harsh second yellow for a neck grab, and against ten
men Elia Ciacci stole the ball off the Flora defence and centred for
Simone Benincasa who was left all alone in the box for the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458580/26934-Record_2024_07_30_21_22_40_400.mp4
Flora re-took the lead thanks to a handball penalty that even I would
call bullshit on, but terrible Estonian defending once more led to
an improbable Sammarinese equaliser by Marseljan Mema:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458580/26938-Record_2024_07_30_21_24_03_405.mp4
This was where the fairy tale ended though - in extra time, Rauno Alliku
tapped in a cross by namesake Rauno Sappinen (who might have been
offside, but no VAR here), and Sappinen also provided the assist for
Alliku's second on the break. Virtus could even have clawed their way
back into the tie when they were awarded a harsh handball penalty of
their own, but 40-year-old Mario Barone, two decades of Serie D (and a
little bit of Serie C) under his belt, saw his poor effort pushed out by
Flora keeper Grünvald. When everyone had already basically switched off
Vladislav Kreida added a fifth:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458580/26944-Record_2024_07_30_21_27_19_326.mp4

BTW as much fun as watching this was, I have to admit that the only word
I can find for the quality of the football on display is... appalling.

FC PYUNIK (ARM)* v FK Struga (MKD) 3-1 (2-1), 4-3 on aggregate
(Déblé 16', Kovalenko 45', 90'+6; Ibraimi 45'+4)

A nice build-up led to Serges Déblé's goal, but the Ivorian globetrotter
was also lucky that Struga keeper Dujmović deflected the shot into his
own net. At the cusp of half-time Mikhail Kovalenko gave Pyunik the
aggregate lead by firing in a loose ball, but things were all level
again at the break as the indefatigable Besart Ibraimi punished the
Armenian defence on the counter-attack. In the end it was Brazilian in
the East Lucas Villela who was instrumental in getting Pyunik the
decisive stoppage time goal - his fierce shot was only slapped away by
Dujmović, and Kovalenko turned in the rebound:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458581/26963-Record_2024_07_30_22_13_56_543.mp4

All three Northern Macedonian teams have been eliminated.

Ħamrun Spartans F.C. (MLT)* v KF BALLKANI (KOS) 0-2 (0-0), 0-2 on aggregate
(Hamidi 64', Karrica 76' (pen))

A comedy goal broke the deadlock - a punt by Henry Bonello fell too
short, and right onto the foot of Ballkani's Algerian winger Walid
Hamidi who sent a volley straight back over the hapless Spartans
goalkeeper. Brazilian centre-back Mayron then conceded a penalty on
Bernard Karrica that the former Albanian youth international despatched
himself.

No group phase for Malta this season either. The Spartans were really
disappointing, getting eliminated by a team that had lost against UE
Santa Coloma.

FK DEČIĆ (MNE) v FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO)* 0-0 (0-0), 2-0 on aggregate

Doing just enough. A major disappointment for Georgia to lose their
champions against Montenegrin opposition.

Main Path

KF DRITA (KOS) v Breiðablik (ISL)* 1-0 (0-0), 3-1 on aggregate
(Selmani 66')

Kastriot Selmani curled in a pretty great winner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458579/26882-Record_2024_07_30_20_24_28_147.mp4

One year after their debut in the Conference League group stage this
feels like a major letdown for Breiðablik.

FK AUDA (LAT)* v Cliftonville FC (NIR) 2-0 (0-0), 4-1 on aggregate
(Ogunniyi 51', Taiwo 61')

Auda are currently closer to the relegation zone than to the European
spots in the Latvian Virslīga, but Northern Irish club football, well.
Both of Auda's Nigerian forwards got on the scoresheet, Abiodun Ogunniyi
left Cliftonville left-back Luke Conlan scrambling before firing in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458584/27164-Record_2024_07_31_19_06_02_540.mp4
and Abdulrahman Taiwo ran onto a long ball by Benfica youth product
Matheus Clemente, held off a feeble challenge by Shaun Leppard, and
slotted past Cliftonville keeper Odumosu:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458584/27165-Record_2024_07_31_19_06_53_457.mp4

FEHÉRVÁR FC (HUN)* v Sumqayıt FK (AZE) 0-0 (0-0), 2-1 on aggregate

Following a common pattern, he home team had more of the match but were
ultimately happy with the scoreless draw.

BK HÄCKEN (SWE) v F91 Diddeleng (LUX)* 6-1 (3-1), 12-3 on aggregate
(Decker 16' (og), Agbonifo 27', Hrstić 45', 48', Nioule 53', Hammar 57';
Bojić 4'; Red Card: Decker (Did) 39')

Düdelingen took the early lead thanks to a 'gol olímpico' by their
Croatian veteran Filip Bojić, but Vincent Decker awkwardly headed a
goal-bound lob by 18-year-old forward Jeremy Agbonifo into his own net
instead of clearing it:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458586/27236-Record_2024_07_31_23_12_25_212.mp4
and Decker later also saw a second booking. Agbonifo got a brace by
running onto Pontus Dahbo's through ball, and against ten men Häcken
added four more - two tap-ins by Srđan Hrstić either side of half-time,
a solo effort by young Ivorian Severin Nioule, and a header by centre-
back Johan Hammar.

FK Austria Wien (AUT)* v TAMPEREEN ILVES (FIN) 4-3 aet (2-1, 3-2), 5-5
on aggregate, Ilves win 5-4 on penalties
(Malone 22', Gruber 27', Barry 68', Prelec 97'; Ala-Myllymäki 30',
Mäenpää 90', Söderbäck 112')

Not this again. Very much like Austria's tragicomic elimination against
Legia Warsaw last year, only even worse. Everything still looked fine
after Basel loanee Maurice Malone and Andreas Gruber had scored from
crosses to give Austria the aggregate lead, but as in the first leg
their defending was simply atrocious (they just brought back Aleksandar
Dragović to help with that, but not in time for this match), and Ilves
levelled the overall score when Austria's keeper Şahin-Radlinger (who
did not have an inspired match to put it mildly) spilled Joona Veteli's
shot for Lauri Ala-Myllymäki to tap in the loose ball:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458587/27255-Record_2024_08_01_00_43_07_546.mp4
Twice more Austria took the aggregate lead, through their new Gambian
signing Abubakr Barry and Slovenian Cagliari loanee Nik Prelec, and
twice Austria's terrible defending allowed Ilves to get the aggregate
equaliser, as exemplified by youngster Marius Söderbäck's extra time
lob:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458587/27255-Record_2024_08_01_00_43_07_546.mp4
In the shootout, the first nine penalties were converted until Dominik
Fitz saw his effort saved by Ilves keeper Ville Seppä.

Only the second time in their history, and the first time since 1991,
that Ilves survive a round in Europe.

FC SPARTAK TRNAVA (SLK)* v FK Sarajevo (BIH) 3-0 (2-0), 3-0 on aggregate
(Ďuriš 15', 42', Karhan 90'+4)

Veteran striker Michal Ďuriš, 36 by now, scored a brace with a header
and a shot through the legs of Sarajevo keeper Rockov:
Loading Image...
Another veteran, 35-year-old Róbert Pich, late on duped Sarajevo
centre-back Nidal Čelik and provided the cross that Patrick Karhan, son
of former longtime Wolfsburg and Mainz midfielder Miroslav Karhan,
tapped into the gaping net for the third:

FK MORNAR BAR (MNE)* v FK Radnički 1923 (SRB) 2-1 aet (1-0, 2-1), 2-2 on
aggregate, Mornar win 4-3 on penalties
(Ondong-Mba 45', 83'; Aleksić 90'+8; Red Cards: Baošić (Mor, on the
bench) 90'+10, Đurašković (Mor, assistant coach) 90'+10)

French journeyman striker Chris-Marlon Ondong-Mba headed in a corner
kick and also fired in from a long throw-in by former Željezničar right-
back Siniša Stevanović:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458589/27251-Record_2024_08_01_00_37_40_159.mp4
but deep in stoppage time Milan Aleksić levelled the aggregate score
with a precise shot from outside the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458589/27252-Record_2024_08_01_00_38_38_510.mp4
Mornar's assistant coach Zoran Đurašković and subbed out centre-back
Jovan Baošić weren't too happy with the three extra minutes of stoppage
time that had followed the five minutes originally indicated, and were
duly dismissed from the bench. Not much else happened in extra time, and
in the shoot-out Mornar's Marko Đurišič and Radnički's Miloš Ristić saw
their efforts saved, and the decisive effort was missed by Radnički
captain Slobodan Simović who hit the post.

Montenegro are the lowest-ranked league to still have a team other than
their champion alive.

FC ORDABASY (KAZ)* v FC Differdange 03 (LUX) 4-3 aet (1-1, 3-2), 4-4 on
aggregate, Ordabasy win 4-3 on penalties
(Brusco 24' (og), Tagybergen 55', Sadovsky 82', Tursynbay 117' (pen);
Trani 2', Jorginho 59', 120'; Red Card: Leandro (Dif) 105')

Now this is the kind of drama I'm here for. Just 90 seconds in Guillaume
Trani's shot was deflected to become an insidious lob over Ordabasy
keeper Shayzada:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458591/27494-Record_2024_08_01_22_22_04_573.mp4
but Differdange (or Differdingen, or Déifferdeng) gifted the reigning
Kazakh champions the equaliser due to Frenchman Théo Brusco's ridiculous
own goal:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458591/27495-Record_2024_08_01_22_22_59_290.mp4
Askhat Tagybergen tapped in after a goalmouth scramble to level the
aggregate score:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458591/27496-Record_2024_08_01_22_23_48_107.mp4
but the Luxembourgers retook the overall lead on the break through their
Portuguese striker Jorginho. Ten minutes from the end another goalmouth
scramble sent the tie to extra time where Differdange's Brazilian
defender Leandro received a second yellow for a foul in the box, but
Bauyrzhan Islamkhan missed the ensuing penalty. Nevertheless, three
minutes from the end another penalty, this time for a controversial
handball, gave Ordabasy what looked like the winning goal, only for ten-
man Differdange to once more find the aggregate equaliser when Gustavo
Simões, another Brazilian, found Jorginho on the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458591/27501-Record_2024_08_01_22_26_57_416.mp4
In a nervous shoot-out both sides had missed two spot kicks before
Shaizada kept out the decisive effort by Ajax youth product Adham El
Idrissi.

KF Egnatia (ALB) v KF VÍKINGUR (ISL)* 0-2 (0-1), 1-2 on aggregate
(Dulysse 28' (og), Þrándarson 48')

In what was an otherwise tough matchday for Iceland, their best chance
to get a team into a group stage remained alive. Haiti international
Francois Dulysse unluckily deflected in a shot by 19-year-old Gísli
Þórðarson:

and Aron Elís Þrándarson fired in a loose ball after the Albanian
defence had failed to clear a free-kick.

FC ASTANA (KAZ)* v FC Milsami Orhei (MDA) 1-0 (0-0), 2-1 on aggregate
(Tomasov 49'; Red Card: Ndon (Mil) 55')

Astana's Croatian mainstay Marin Tomasov headed in the decisive goal
from Nazim Gripshi's looping cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458590/27413-Record_2024_08_01_18_22_25_905.mp4
and after their young Nigerian winger Ime Ndon was sent off with a
second booking the Moldovans weren't able to stage a comeback.

NK Bravo (SLO) v HŠK ZRINJSKI MOSTAR (BIH)* 1-3 (1-1), 2-3 on aggregate
(Tučić 21'; Mulahusejnović 16', Jakovljević 66', Mlinar 80')

In pouring rain, the two sides quickly exchanged goals, but the Bosnians
decided the tie thanks to two free-kicks - Slobodan Jakovljević headed
in a delivery by Antonio Ivančić, and Frano Mlinar's effort was
deflected in.

FC Urartu (ARM) v FC BANÍK OSTRAVA (CZE)* 0-2 (0-2), 1-7 on aggregate
(Ewerton 22', Chaluš 51')

Ewerton fired in a low cross and centre-back Matěj Chaluš headed in a
corner kick for another easy win for the Czech Silesians.

KF Llapi (KOS) v BRØNDBY IF (DEN)* 2-2 (1-0), 2-8 on aggregate
(Gashijan 42', Mikkelsen 66' (og); Yeboah 53', Omoijuanfo 61' (pen))

Elvir Gashijan collected Ilir Blakçori's cross before turning and
shooting past Brøndby keeper Mikkelsen to give the Kosovars the lead.
Emmanuel Yeboah's well-placed shot:
Loading Image...
and a penalty awarded for Llapi right-back Diar Vokrri tripping US boy
Christian Cappis turned the match around, but the Kosovars at least got
the equaliser and some coefficient points when Gashijan's shot came back
off the crossbar and hit Mikkelsen in the back to go in:

FC ARARAT-ARMENIA (ARM)* v FC Zimbru Chișinău (MDA) 3-1 (1-0), 6-1 on
aggregate
(Yenne 28', Serobyan 68' (pen), Duarte 88'; Ohajunwa 62')

Two Nigerians scored on either side - winger Tenton Yenne gave Ararat-
Armenia the lead on the break while Justice Ohajunwa tapped in
Jessie Guera Djou's centre for the equaliser. Still, a late challenge by
Zimbru keeper Cebotari gave away a penalty and late on Colombian
Jonathan Duarte added a third on the break to give the Armenians another
surprisingly comfortable win.

FCI Levadia (EST) v NK OSIJEK (CRO)* 0-1 (0-0), 1-6 on aggregate
(Pušić 63')

Former Swiss Under-21 international Petar Pušić scored the only goal
with an angled shot after a bad pass had caught the Estonian defence
flat-footed.

FC Polissya Zhytomyr (UKR) v NK OLIMPIJA LJUBLJANA (SLO)* 1-2 (1-1), 1-4
on aggregate
(Kushnirenko 1'; Florucz 11', Durdov 90'+3)

In Gliwice, Polissya quickly halved the first-leg deficit when Bohdan
Kushnirenko slotted in Oleksandr Nazarenko's cut-back cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458597/27472-Record_2024_08_01_21_43_04_90.mp4
but Olimpija soon restored their aggregate lead through their Austrian
winger Raul Florucz, who had already scored in the first leg and who
left former Dnipro-1 centre-back Eduard Sarapiy in the dust:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458597/27474-Record_2024_08_01_21_43_29_551.mp4
In stoppage time the Slovenians even took all the coefficient points,
too, when from a poorly defended free-kick Ivan Durdov's volley squirmed
through the legs of Polissya keeper Kudryk:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458597/27475-Record_2024_08_01_21_44_18_651.mp4

In addition to Dnipro-1's forfeit, the next blow for the Ukrainian
coefficient. They are by far the highest-ranked league to have already
lost two starters.

PAFOS FC (CYP) v FK Žalgiris (LTU)* 3-0 aet (1-0, 1-0), 4-2 on aggregate
(Tanković 21', Anderson Silva 101', Dragomir 118';
Red Card: Zahary (Žal) 37')

Swedish journeyman Muamer Tanković levelled the aggregate score already
early on when he volleyed in an assist by Pafos's Brazilian captain
Jairo:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458598/27434-Record_2024_08_01_20_00_23_637.mp4
but despite a ton of chances, and Žalgiris being reduced to ten after
Comoros international Younn Zahary had been sent off for a last-man foul
on Jairo, the Cypriot cup winners had to wait until extra time to find
the breakthrough. Jairo's fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva met Derrick
Luckassen's deflected cross with an acrobatic overhead kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458598/27505-Record_2024_08_01_22_33_00_296.mp4
and Romanian winger Vlad Dragomir headed in a third on the break.

FC Tobol (KAZ) v FC ST. GALLEN 1879 (SUI)* 0-1 (0-0), 1-5 on aggregate
(Cissé 73'; Red Cards: Essien (Tob) 68', Galym (Tob) 90')

Nigerian midfielder Ededem Essien was sent off with a second yellow, and
20-year-old Guinean substitute Moustapha Cissé, a loanee from Bologna,
got the only goal by intercepting Mihailo Stevanović's rather feeble
shot and wrong-footing Tobol keeper Pokatilov:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458599/27466-Record_2024_08_01_21_34_02_384.mp4
Late on the young substitute Beybit Galym was also sent off for a studs-
up tackle on Christian Witzig, so Tobol ended the match in nine.

FK TransINVEST (LTU) v FK MLADÁ BOLESLAV (CZE)* 0-1 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate
(Vojta 78')

Similar to Baník in Armenia, doing just enough to get all the
coefficient points. That sort of thing is really helpful for climbing in
the UEFA ranking, as the Czechs have done in the last couple of seasons.
Young striker Matyáš Vojta got his first goal for the senior team by
firing in from a very tight angle.

SABAH FK (AZE) v Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR)* 3-6 aet (0-1, 2-5), 6-6 on
aggregate, Sabah win 3-2 on penalties
(Šafranko 47', Parris 71', Mickels 103'; Haziza 17', Pierrot 67', 90',
Šimić 70', Refaelov 73', David 112')

Whoa.
Following their 0-3 defeat in the first leg, after the first 45 minutes
little suggested that Maccabi Haifa would mount a comeback despite
Dolev Haziza rifling in an angled shot from Pierre Cornud's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458601/27419-Record_2024_08_01_18_31_28_761.mp4
and even less would have suggested that when right after the break Pavol
Šafranko slotted in an assist by Jamaican international Kaheem Parris.
Frantzdy Pierrot chesting in Lior Refaelov's free-kick followed by
Croatian centre-back Lorenco Šimić firing in from a goalmouth scramble:
Loading Image...
meant that the Israeli were only one goal away from sending the tie to
extra time, but Parris immediately threw cold water on that idea when
he stole the ball off Dynamo Kyiv loanee Oleksandr Syrota as last man:
Loading Image...
Refaelov immediately restored the two-goal lead though following good
work by the young substitute Ilay Hagag:
Loading Image...
and in the last minute the improbable comeback was complete when
Frantzdy Pierrot steered in another Cornud cross:
Loading Image...
Now in the olden days that would have been it, and Haifa through on away
goals, but in these more enlightened times it meant extra time, where
Sabah retook the aggregate lead through German journeyman striker Joy-
Lance Mickels who from a tight angle fired through the legs of
Maccabi keeper Keouf:
Loading Image...
The drama wasn't over yet as in response the Israeli scored their sixth
again from a cross, this one headed in by Dean David. A shoot-out seemed
like the only proper way to end this match anyway. Mickels sent his
spot kick against the crossbar, but three Maccabi players also missed -
Kenny Saief's shot was deflected by Sabah keeper İmanov against the
post, Dia Saba sent his effort wide, and erstwhile hero Frantzdy Pierrot
fired over the bar.

A very wild match, and a historic comeback averted. I believe Maccabi
Haifa would have been only the second team in close to 70 years of
European cup history to go through in a two-legged tie after having lost
at home by three goals.

AEK Larnaca FC (CYP)* v PAKSI FC (HUN) 0-2 (0-2), 0-5 on aggregate
(Haraszti 19', Papp 42')

I would have expected much more from the Cypriots on their sizzlingly
hot home turf, but Zsolt Haraszti's cross-turned-shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458602/27467-Record_2024_08_01_21_36_34_154.mp4
and Kristóf Papp's solo effort on the break gave the Hungarians a
comfortable away win.

Inter Club d'Escaldes (AND) v AEK FC (GRE)* 0-4 (0-1), 3-8 on aggregate
(García 29', 74', 86', Amrabat 83')

Awww. Levi Garcia's solo run dampened Andorran hopes already in the
first half, and the Trinidadian quite ruthlessly finished Inter Escaldes
off late in the game.

PAIDE LINNAMEESKOND (EST) v UMF Stjarnan (ISL)* 4-0 (1-0), 5-2 on aggregate
(He. Ojamaa 29', Saarma 46', Ceesay 57', Lilander 85')

Paide captain and veteran traveller across European football Henrik
Ojamaa (his younger brother Hindrek is also in Paide's squad) tapped in
Daniel Luts's centre from the shortest of ranges. Robi Saarma fired in
a loose ball for the second, and Gambian forward Abdoulie Ceesay
punished another error in the Icelandic defence for the third:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458604/27479-Record_2024_08_01_21_48_33_147.mp4
Right-back Michael Lilander finished off the rout with a nicely struck
free-kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458604/27480-Record_2024_08_01_21_49_12_146.mp4

Considering how Flora - who are currently practically level with Paide
in the Estonian Meistriliiga - did against Sammarinese opposition, this
was quite the surprising margin of victory.

SK BRANN (NOR) v Go Ahead Eagles (NED)* 2-1 (1-1), 2-1 on aggregate
(Finne 42', Knudsen 62'; Tengstedt 2')

Danish striker Søren Tengstedt gave the team from Deventer the early
lead by latching onto a through ball by his fellow countryman Jakob
Breum: Loading Image...
but Bård Finne got the equaliser before the break from a nice assist
by one-time Chile international Niklas Castro:
Loading Image...
and Castro also delivered the corner kick that centre-back Fredrik
Knudsen headed in for the winner.

The Netherlands, Israel, and Austria are the only top-15 leagues to have
already lost a team.

FC Torpedo Kutaisi (GEO) v AC OMONOIA (CYP)* 1-2 (0-1), 2-5 on aggregate
(Yansané 47'; Stępiński 25', Semedo 81' (pen))

Former Chievo forward Mariusz Stępiński tapped in a cross by Cape
Verdean international Willy Semedo to give Omonoia the lead while
Guinean striker Momo Yansané, previously of Rijeka and Sheriff,
emphatically volleyed in a cut-back cross by former Botafogo winger
Warley for the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458606/27437-Record_2024_08_01_20_19_51_149.mp4
The Cypriots still scored the late winner after Nika Sandokhadze had
collided with Andronikos Kakoullis in the box, similar to the penalty
that Harry Kane got at the Euros against the Netherlands.

TROMSØ IL (NOR) v KuPS (FIN)* 1-0 (1-0), 2-0 on aggregate
(Hjertø-Dahl 29')

The Finns conceded a penalty after just two minutes but Lasse Nordås saw
his effort saved by Kuopio's Austrian keeper Johannes Kreidl. Didn't
really matter though as 18-year-old Jens Hjertø-Dahl ran onto a long
ball by brilliantly named fellow youngster Jakob Napoleon Romsaas and
slotted past Kreidl for the sole goal.

CS Universitatea Craiova (ROM)* v NK MARIBOR (SLO) 3-2 (0-0), 3-4 on
aggregate
(Mitriță 52', Grego 72', Koljić 90'+5; Iličić 68', Jakupović 82')

U Craiova halved the first-leg deficit early in the second half when
Alexandru Mitriță curled a shot past Maribor keeper Jug, but old man
Josip Iličić soon equalised by volleying in Jan Repas's assist:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458608/27509-Record_2024_08_01_22_36_27_912.mp4
Craiova's new Spanish signing Grego once more put the Romanians within
one with a great finish underneath the crossbar:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458608/27510-Record_2024_08_01_22_37_04_213.mp4
and once more the Slovenians equalised, this time through the Austrian
substitute Arnel Jakupović who fired in through the legs of Craiova
captain Nicușor Bancu. Elvir Koljić's last-minute goal came too late.

FC KØBENHAVN (DEN)* v FC Bruno's Magpies (GIB) 5-1 (1-1), 8-1 on aggregate
(Diks 40' (pen), Froholdt 54', Óskarsson 61', 84', Højer 80';
Bayode 17')

FCK's Icelandic reserve keeper Rúnarsson in his competitive debut for
the Danes gifted the Magpies the early lead, just for the lulz:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458609/27535-Record_2024_08_01_23_03_18_177.mp4
and even though the Danes had to wait for the equaliser until they were
awarded a penalty just before half-time, their youngsters were ruthless
in the second half. A shot by 18-year-old Victor Froholdt's was
deflected in, 19-year-old Icelandic striker talent Orri Óskarsson got a
brace, and 17-year-old Oliver Højer also volleyed one in.

Caernarfon Town FC (WAL) v LEGIA WARSZAWA (POL)* 0-5 (0-0), 0-11 on
aggregate
(Kapustka 46', Jędrzejczyk 48', Pekhart 54', Nsamé 72', Barcia 83';
Red Card: Sears (Cae) 86')

Caernarfon held on for one half, then fell apart. Bartosz Kapustka
volleyed in a long ball by Legia's new Spanish defender Sergio Barcia
that eluded the Welsh defence, Legia's veteran captain Artur Jędrzejczyk
headed in a free-kick, fellow oldie Tomáš Pekhart tapped in a cross, and
former Young Boys striker and Como loanee Jean-Pierre Nsamé lobbed in
another long ball that wrong-footed Caernarfon's defenders. Barcia
finished off a great debut for his new club by heading in a corner kick.

FC Progrès Niederkorn (LUX) v DJURGÅRDENS IF (SWE)* 1-0 (1-0), 1-3 on
aggregate
(Karamoko 3'; Red Card: Une Larsson (Dju) 36')

At least the Luxembourgers made Djurgården sweat a little after their
French centre-back Hamadou Karamoko had headed them into an early lead
from a corner kick, and Jacob Une Larsson was sent off for a rash
tackle. Progrès had a couple of good opportunites to make the tie even
more interesting, but Djurgården keeper Zetterström was up to the task.

Sweden are the lowest-ranked nation that still has all four of their
teams alive.

Sliema Wanderers FC (MLT) v FC NOAH (ARM)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-7 on aggregate

Yeah, that works.

FC Vaduz (LIE)* v ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC FC (IRL) 2-2 (1-1), 3-5 on aggregate
(Cavegn 22' (pen), 76'; Elbouzedi 28', Palmer 81')

Fabrizio Cavegn, the only Rumantsch football player I know, gave Vaduz
the lead from the spot after St Patrick's Swedish right-back Axel
Sjöberg (not to be confused with the former MLS defender of the same
name) had pulled down Lorik Emini, and just minutes later Vaduz's
Spanish winger Javi Navarro could have levelled the aggregate score, but
his shot came off the right post. Instead, Zach Elbouzedi fired in a
cut-back cross by Jake Mulraney that had thrown the Liechtensteiner
defence into disarray. Cavegn once more brought Vaduz within one when
his harmless-looking shot was deflected past St Pat's keeper Anang, but
former Barnsley midfielder Romal Palmer once more got the equaliser
thanks to a ping-pong goal when he steered in an attempted clearance.

PFC Cherno More Varna (BUL) v HAPOEL BE'ER SHEVA FC (ISR)* 1-2 (1-1),
1-2 on aggregate
(Calcan 33'; Lopes 25', 64')

Be'er Sheva's Portuguese left-back Hélder Lopes headed in a corner kick,
but the Bulgarians equalised thanks to a Romanian as Andreias Calcan
scored with a pretty great free-kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458614/27514-Record_2024_08_01_22_40_25_909.mp4
Still, a free-kick by a Romanian also spelled doom for Cherno More since
Antonio Sefer's delivery was once more headed in by Lopes.

Víkingur (FAR) v KAA GENT (BEL)* 0-2 (0-0), 1-6 on aggregate
(Mitrović 64', Fernández-Pardo 69')

It's likely that Víkingur and not Klaksvík will win the Faroese title
this year, but Gent were too much for them to handle. Veteran Serbian
centre-back Stefan Mitrović headed in a corner kick and 19-year-old
Belgian youth international Matías Fernández-Pardo fired in following a
nice assist from Pieter Gerkens.

FC Neman Grodno (BLR) v FC CFR 1907 CLUJ (ROM)* 0-5 (0-2), 0-5 on aggregate
(Muhar 17', Bîrligea 40', 57', Korenica 59', Nkololo 90'+3)

I believe I've seen that before, Cluj following up a lacklustre home
performance with a convincing one away. Croatian midfielder Karlo Muhar
volleyed in Ciprian Deac's free-kick while Daniel Bîrligea first scored
on the break and then with a great lob over Neman keeper Belov:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458617/27543-Record_2024_08_01_23_12_55_420.mp4
New signing from Ballkani Meriton Korenica got the fourth with a
sumptuous shot from just outside the area, and French journeyman winger
Béni Nkololo (previously in Ligue 2, Australia, and Saudi-Arabia) made
it five by pushing the ball through Belov's legs from short range:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458617/27545-Record_2024_08_01_23_14_38_39.mp4

Belarus are by now firmly established in the bottom five in the UEFA
ranking, which will reduce the number of teams they are allowed to send
to Europe to three.

FK Partizani (ALB)* v FC IBERIA 1999 (GEO) 0-0 (0-0), 0-2 on aggregate

While the last Albanian club has been eliminated (it's been a pretty bad
season for them), Iberia as their last remaining team are still keeping
the Georgian flag flying. Georgia are also the only nation to still have
a team alive even though their national champion (Dinamo Batumi) has
already been eliminated.

FC DAC 1904 (SLK)* v ZIRƏ FK (AZE) 1-2 (1-1), 1-6 on aggregate
(Méndez 40'; Utzig 25', Alıyev 57' (pen); Red Card: Yapi (DAC) 56')

Nigerien (not Nigerian) international Issa Djibrilla irresistibly
powered past the indisposed Slovakian defence and centred for Zirə's
Brazilian striker Raphael Utzig who was left with an easy finish:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458619/27484-Record_2024_08_01_22_02_06_343.mp4
Following a poorly defended free-kick Dunajská Streda's Spanish left-
back Alex Méndez fired in a curling shot from a tight angle for the
equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458619/27486-Record_2024_08_01_22_06_00_930.mp4
but right after the home team had wasted four great opportunites in a
row Romaric Yapi was sent off for a last-man foul in the box and Zirə
captain Qismət Alıyev scored from the spot to give the Azeri a somewhat
surprising win also in Slovakia.

WKS ŚLĄSK WROCŁAW (POL) v Riga FC (LAT)* 3-1 (1-1), 3-2 on aggregate
(Nahuel 6' (pen), 52', Petrov 49'; Babec 33';
Red Card: Orosco (Rig) 61')

The Polish favourites erased the first-leg deficit already after a
couple of minutes following Mouhamed El Bachir Ngom's ill-timed tackle
against Piotr Samiec-Talar, and former Spanish Under-21 international
Nahuel converted from the spot. Virslīga record signing Hrvoje Babec
equalised from a corner kick at the second attempt:
Loading Image...
but Simeon Petrov, one of Śląsk's Bulgarian centre-back pairing,
likewise scored with an emphatic header:
Loading Image...
Nahuel scored the goal that eventually saw the Poles through to next
round with a curved shot from distance that Riga keeper Matrevics
should have probably saved:
Loading Image...
as the Latvians weren't able to mount a comeback after their Argeninian
midfielder Brian Orosco had been sent off for a lunging tackle.

ST MIRREN FC (SCO)* v KF Valur (ISL) 4-1 (1-0), 4-1 on aggregate
(Rooney 16', Olusanya 52', O'Hara 65', Iacovitti 88';
Haraldsson 75' (pen))

Early on Shaun Rooney headed in a corner kick to calm Scottish nerves,
and St Mirren made sure of things in the second half - the Icelandic
defence failed to deal with a long ball and Irish youngster Roland
Idowa flicked it into the path of Toyosi Olusanya, and Saints captain
Mark O'Hara volleyed in a really nice goal from Rooney's long throw-in:
Loading Image...
Valur pulled one back from the spot after Jaden Brown had felled Jonatan
Jónsson, but Alex Iacovitti scored a fourth, again after a corner.

SP La Fiorita (SMR) v İSTANBUL BAŞAKŞEHIR FK (TUR)* 0-4 (0-3), 1-10 on
aggregate
(Piątek 13', 90'+1, Şahiner 31', Güreler 35')

Pretty OK home performance by the last remaining Sammarinese team, but
they also completely messed up their offside trap for Krzysztof Piątek's
opener: Loading Image...
Ömer Ali Şahiner fired in a loose ball for the second, and 18-year-old
centre-back Hamza Güreler scored from a free-kick to make it three.
Late on Piątek tapped in a rebound into the empty net after La Fiorita
keeper Zavoli had pulled off a quite spectacular save against Philippe
Kény's point blank header.

Shelbourne FC (IRL) v FC ZÜRICH (SUI)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate

Always in control, and Zürich could have won it when after a corner kick
a volley by their Argentinian centre-back Mariano Gómez, freshly signed
from Atlético B, came crashing off the crossbar.

FK Budućnost Podgorica (MNE)* v FC CSKA 1948 SOFIA (BUL) 1-1 aet (0-0,
1-0), 1-2 on aggregate
(Perišić 65'; Serdiuk 102')

CSKA 1948 keeper Marinov did well to parry Milan Vukotić's deflected
shot, but he was helpless against Vladimir Perišić's rebound header:
Loading Image...
In extra time the Ukrainian substitute Yevheniy Serdyuk on the break
scored the goal that sent the Bulgarians through.

BTW it's notable that CSKA 1948 got into Europe by winning a play-off
final against their enemy twins CSKA-Sofia.

HB (FAR) v HNK HAJDUK SPLIT (CRO)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-2 on aggregate

Ivan Rakitić made his Hajduk debut by coming on as a substitute, but had
little impact.

VITÓRIA SC (POR)* v Floriana FC (MLT) 4-0 (4-0), 5-0 on aggregate
(Kaio César 8', Fernandes 11', Mangas 37', 43')

The first leg on Malta had been a bit of a slog, but at home in
Guimaraes Vitória only needed one half to make sure they were going
through. Brazilian youngster Kaio César jumped into Ricardo Mangas's
looping cross to head them into the lead:
Loading Image...
centre-back Jorge Fernandes headed in a corner kick, and Mangas scored a
brace by first tapping in Bruno Gaspar's cross followed by a pretty
sweet bicycle kick.

Since the last Maltese team bowed out Malta are the highest-ranked
league to have already lost all four of their teams. It's been a subpar
season for them.

FC Noah (ARM) v AEK FC (GRE)* 3-1 (1-1)
(Pinson 33', Čančarević 67', Gregório 90'+8; García 22')

Haha, brilliant - not just because the underdog won, but also because of
the kind of goals they scored in the process. Things still looked good
for the Greeks when Levi García headed in a cross by Mijat Gaćinović,
but it wasn't long until the first gaffe by AEK's newly signed keeper
Thomas Strakosha - he mishit a pass straight into the legs of Virgile
Pinson, and Noah's French forward beat him with a low shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459565/28531-Record_2024_08_06_19_22_14_455.mp4
That blunder didn't hold a candle though to the one Strakosha committed
for Noah's second, allowing his colleague at the other end Ognjen
Čančarević (born in Serbia, but a naturalized Armenian) to score with a
long punt:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459565/28546-Record_2024_08_06_20_25_17_580.mp4
In many years of watching football I've now seen a couple of these, and
they never cease to be amusing. Very late on Portuguese striker Goncalo
Gregório even added a third, and neither Strakosha nor the AEK defence
looked particularly good on that occasion either:

Paksi FC (HUN)* v FK Mornar Bar (MNE) 3-0 (0-0)
(Böde 59', Szábó 90'+9 (pen), Tóth 90'+10;
Red Cards: Ondong-Mba (Mor) 38', Đurišić (Mor) 62')

VAR made its Conference League debut at this stage, and its first victim
was Mornar's French striker Chris-Marlon Ondong-Mba whose studs up
challenge against the shin of Bálint Vécsei was - somewhat harshly -
adjudged to be worthy of a red card. Against ten men, Paks finally got
the opener when at the second attempt Dániel Böde from short range
headed in József Windecker's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459566/28835-Record_2024_08_07_21_16_41_724.mp4
and things got even worse for Mornar as Marko Đurišić saw a second
yellow for a stupid elbow against Windecker. But nine Montenegrins held
their own surprisingly well, that is until they still conceded twice
during ten minutes of stoppage time. VAR once more did them in when it
magically transformed a free-kick at the edge of the box into a penalty
that was converted by Bálint Szábó, and Barna Tóth latched onto Szabolcs
Mezei's excellent assist for Paks's third.

BK Häcken (SWE)* v Paide Linnameeskond (EST) 6-1 (3-1)
(Amane 5', 6', Layouni 35', 90'+1, Inoussa 64', Agbonifo 89';
Ceesay 32')

Häcken have really made the best out of a favourable draw and have now
scored six goals in their third consecutive European match. Young
Ivorian Romeo Amane scored a brace within the first six minutes, he
first latched onto Simon Gustafson's assist following some nice passing
around the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459567/28839-Record_2024_08_07_21_23_03_412.mp4
and then turned in Amor Layouni's low cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459567/28840-Record_2024_08_07_21_23_46_832.mp4
Häcken's Tunisian winger got the third by likewise slotting in a centre
by Zeidane Inoussa after Paide's young Gambian Abdoulie Ceesay had
previously halved the deficit by tapping in Patrik Kristal's cross.
After the break Inoussa curled in number four:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459567/28844-Record_2024_08_07_21_29_02_479.mp4
and in the dying minutes of the match Häcken added two more - 18-year-
old Jeremy Agbonifo fired a sumptuous shot into the far corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459567/28845-Record_2024_08_07_21_30_08_352.mp4
and Inoussa and Layouni once more combined to get one on the break.

FC København (DEN)* v FC Baník Ostrava (CZE) 1-0 (0-0)
(Froholdt 90'+1)

FCK had perhaps more problems with the Czechs than expected, but they
still got the late winner when Victor Froholdt, on as a substitute,
tapped Lukas Lerager's crafty assist into the gaping net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459568/28818-Record_2024_08_07_20_51_52_148.mp4

FC St. Gallen 1879 (SUI) v WKS Śląsk Wrocław (POL)* 2-0 (2-0)
(Akolo 5', Geubbels 41')

Śląsk had more opportunities, but St. Gallen scored the goals -
Congolese international Chadrac Akolo tapped in Bastien Toma's assist:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459570/28819-Record_2024_08_07_20_55_39_206.mp4
and Willem Geubbels (aren't we all glad he left Monaco half a year
before Adolf Hütter took over the managerial job there?) fired in an
angled shot after the Silesian defence had lost the ball in front of
their own area:

Champions Path

FC Ordabasy (KAZ) v FC Pyunik (ARM)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Otubanjo 56')

If they should actually bring a team into the Conference League group
stage this could become Armenia's best European season in quite a while.
Nigerian striker Yusuf Otubanjo, who has a past in the Austrian
Bundesliga before he went east, volleyed in David Davidyan's pin-point
cross for the winner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459571/29111-Record_2024_08_08_21_03_22_61.mp4

HJK (FIN)* v FK Dečić (MNE) 1-0 (0-0)
(Erwin 49')

Montenegro's chances of reaching a first ever group phase are still
intact if slightly diminished since Scotsman Lee Erwin tapped a rebound
into the empty net after Dečić keeper Nikić had parried Santeri
Hostikka's shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459573/29114-Record_2024_08_08_21_08_45_419.mp4

KF Ballkani (KOS)* v Larne FC (NIR) 0-1 (0-0)
(Donnelly 89')

Northern Ireland's chances for a first ever group phase look even
better as one minute from time Aaron Donnelly bundled Levi Ives's free-
kick over the line:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459584/29161-Record_2024_08_08_22_21_29_580.mp4
I still expect them to somehow screw it up though.

KF Víkingur (ISL) v FC Flora (EST)* 0-1 (0-1)
(Ingimundarson 40'; Lepik 21' (pen))

Considering how awful Flora were in the previous round against Virtus
it came as a bit of a surprise that they took the lead in Iceland, but
that goal was first and foremost a gift by Víkingur centre-back Jón
Guðni Fjóluson who completely mishit a back pass, forcing his keeper
Ingvar Jónsson to commit a foul on Mark Anders Lepik. Valdimar Þór
Ingimundarson at least got the equaliser after the ball had ricocheted
around the Estonian box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459590/29103-Record_2024_08_08_20_57_42_484.mp4

Main Path

FC Ararat-Armenia (ARM) v Puskás Akadémia FC (HUN)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Soisalo 89')

In an even game the Armenians still conceded late on when a clever
through ball sent Jonathan Levi clear and the Swede centred for his
fellow Nordic Mikael Soisalo to tap in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459572/29027-Record_2024_08_08_18_53_06_731.mp4

The purpose of this so-called Puskás 'Academy' remains a mystery to me -
unlike Paks, whose entire squad is Hungarian, there were only three
Hungarians on the pitch against Ararat-Armenia, and only one of them,
19-year-old goalkeeper Ármin Pécsi, was actually young. The remainder
were Finns, Czechs, or the odd Englishman, all pushing 30 or above.

Or perhaps not that much of mystery, they are of course still first and
foremost a vehicle for first-league football in the oversized vanity
stadium that Viktor Orbán has constructed in his home village Felcsút.

FK Auda (LAT) v KF Drita (KOS)* 1-0 (1-0)
(Tavares 8')

Auda keep surprising - Sporting youth product Bruno Tavares, who had
come to Latvia via Cyprus, scored the early winner when his direct
free-kick from the corner of the box surprised Drita keeper Maloku.

FK Mladá Boleslav (CZE) v Hapoel Be'er Sheva FC (ISR)* 1-1 (1-0)
(Vydra 39' (pen); Yosefi 50')

Sparta Prague loanee Patrik Vydra gave Mladá Boleslav the lead from the
spot after Roei Gordana was somewhat harshly adjudged to have tripped
Lukáš Mašek in the box. The Czechs had a couple of good chances after
that, but Be'er Sheva got a lucky equaliser when Tomer Yosefi's shot
was deflected in by Mladá Boleslav's veteran centre-back Marek Suchý.

Tampereen Ilves (FIN) v Djurgårdens IF (SWE)* 1-1 (0-0)
(Riski 65'; Wikheim 57')

The Finnish surprise package held their own well also against Swedish
opposition - although Djurgården did take the lead on the break through
Gustav Wikheim's excellent shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459575/29172-Record_2024_08_08_22_44_04_292.mp4
Ilves got the deserved equaliser after Roope Riski had tunnelled DIF
keeper Zetterström:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459575/29173-Record_2024_08_08_22_45_38_474.mp4

FC Iberia 1999 (GEO) v İstanbul Başakşehir FK (TUR)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Davidson 87')

The Georgian underdogs held on for the longest time until three minutes
from the end Onur Ergün sent a great assist towards Davidson and the
Brazilian had little problem scoring from close range:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459576/29071-Record_2024_08_08_20_18_59_377.mp4

MFK Ružomberok (SLK) v HNK Hajduk Split (CRO)* 0-0 (0-0)

Ivan Perišić and Ivan Rakitić once more came on as substitutes for
Hajduk, and once more with rather little impact.

Silkeborg IF (DEN) v KAA Gent (BEL)* 2-2 (0-0)
(Adamsen 49' (pen), 90'+5; Ganchas 61' (og), Dean 90'+3)

Silkeborg were awarded a penalty for Sven Kums's challenge on Younes
Bakiz that was a fraction of a second late, and Tonni Adamsen converted
from the spot. At the other end the Danes were hugely unlucky that
Núrio Fortuna's cross was deflected by their new Portuguese centre-back
Pedro Ganchas and curved perfectly over SIF keeper Nicolai Larsen:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459578/29062-Record_2024_08_08_20_05_15_469.mp4
Stoppage time was wild - young Englishman Max Dean emphatically headed
in Daisuke Yokota's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459578/29177-Record_2024_08_08_22_52_47_759.mp4
but the Danes still got the equaliser when Gent keeper Davy Roef flapped
at Andreas Pyndt's corner kick and Adamsen somewhat awkwardly volleyed
in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459578/29178-Record_2024_08_08_22_53_43_321.mp4

FC Zürich (SUI) v Vitória SC (POR)* 0-3 (0-0)
(Mangas 54', Gómez 88' (og), Oliveira 90'+3)

A surprisingly dominant performance by the team from Guimarães -
Portuguese clubs from outside the Top 4 aren't very often doing this
well in qualifiers. Ricardo Mangas had been completely forgotten by the
Swiss defence when he tapped in from short range after a goalmouth
scramble:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459579/29138-Record_2024_08_08_21_48_19_140.mp4
and late on Mariano Gómez unluckily deflected Nélson Oliveira's header
into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459579/29211-Record_2024_08_09_06_11_04_985.mp4
In stoppage time the substitute striker even added a third by running
onto Nuno Santos's clever through ball:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459579/29212-Record_2024_08_09_06_12_31_149.mp4

Brøndby IF (DEN) v Legia Warszawa (POL)* 2-3 (2-1)
(Bundgaard 19', Kvistgaarden 36'; Pekhart 24', Luquinhas 70',
Morishita 87')

Youngster Filip Bundgaard gave the Danes the lead with a precise finish
from inside the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459581/29184-Record_2024_08_08_23_00_41_245.mp4
but at the other end it was a veteran who soon scored the equaliser as
Tomáš Pekhart stabbed home Bartosz Kapustka's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459581/29186-Record_2024_08_08_23_02_10_598.mp4
Brøndby once more went in front when Mathias Kvistgaarden slotted in
Bundgaard's cut-back assist, but halfway through the second half Noah
Nartey losing the ball in front of his own area spelled disaster for the
Danes, with Legia's Brazilian returnee Luquinhas at the end finishing
off a one-two:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459581/29188-Record_2024_08_08_23_04_42_959.mp4
Another tap-in even gave the Poles the win as the Japanese substitute
Ryoya Morishita successfully got to the end of Blaž Kramer's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459581/29189-Record_2024_08_08_23_05_33_821.mp4
with VAR overturning the initial offside decision.

AC Omonoia (CYP)* v Fehérvár FC (HUN) 1-0 (0-0)
(Stępiński 60')

Polish striker Mariusz Stępiński acrobatically volleyed in Alpha
Diounkou's cross for the sole goal:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459582/29198-Record_2024_08_08_23_27_08_75.mp4
but the Hungarians can be reasonably content to escape the Cypriot heat
with only a one-goal defeat.

NK Olimpija Ljubljana (SLO)* v FC Sheriff (MDA) 3-0 (1-0)
(Pedro Lucas 45'+4 (pen), Doffo 65', Sualehe 84')

After three consecutive years in the Champions or Europa League this
looks like the end of the line for Sheriff. Olimpija's Brazilian forward
Pedro Lucas (wouldn't he have a higher recognizability if he went by
his actual last name Schwaizer?) gave the Slovenians the lead from the
spot after Matheus Lins, also a Brazilian, had lost the ball to Dino
Kojić and was forced to bring the Slovenian youngster down in the box.
Pedro Lucas also provided the through ball that fellow South American
Agustín Doffo slotted in on the break, and a Portuguese capped off the
result as left-back David Sualehe volleyed in a loose ball:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459583/29213-Record_2024_08_09_06_16_13_192.mp4

FC CSKA 1948 Sofia (BUL) v Pafos FC (CYP)* 2-1 (1-1)
(Ilievski 29', Thalis 51' (pen); Tanković 10')

Muamer Tanković tapped in a cross by Athletico-PR loanee Jajá for an
early Cypriot lead, but chaos in the Pafos box led to young Macedonian
striker Mario Ilievski firing in the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459569/29068-Record_2024_08_08_20_14_02_335.mp4
Brazilian in the East Thalis gave CSKA 1948 the win with a penalty
awarded for Derrick Luckassen clumsily bowling over Ilievski.

Kilmarnock FC (SCO) v Tromsø IL (NOR)* 2-2 (1-0)
(Vassell 6', Wales 90'+3; Romsaas 50', 64')

Northern Irish journeyman striker Kyle Vassell volleyed Killie into the
lead after Brad Lyons's looping header had come off the post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459585/29218-Record_2024_08_09_06_26_17_454.mp4
but the delightfully named Norwegian youngster Jakob Napoleon Romsaas
got a brace with two goals on the break to turn the match around.
Kilmarnock then also saw a penalty cancelled by VAR, but they still
found the equaliser deep in stoppage time when 19-year-old Bobby Wales
tapped in from a corner kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459585/29152-Record_2024_08_08_22_02_11_206.mp4

CS Corvinul Hunedoara (ROM) v FC Astana (KAZ)* 1-1 (1-0)
(Manolache 37'; Camara 62', Chinedu 80')

Once more the Romanian second division team held their own well against
nominally superior opposition, and their centre-back Antoniu Manolache
even headed them in front, but Guinea international Ousmane Camara
dribbled past two defenders to fire in the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459586/29128-Record_2024_08_08_21_36_41_433.mp4
and his Nigerian strike partner Geoffrey Chinedu likewise capped off a
solo run with a curler into the far corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459586/29146-Record_2024_08_08_21_58_14_225.mp4

Maccabi Petah Tikva FC (ISR) v FC CFR 1907 Cluj (ROM)* 0-1 (0-1)
(Muhar 9')

Croatian midfielder Karlo Muhar tapped in the rebound after Petah
Tikva's Argentinian keeper Marco Wolff had awkwardly parried Daniel
Bîrligea's angled shot.

Let's wait and see what the return legs bring, but this could become a
really difficult season for the Israeli coefficient.

NK Osijek (CRO)* v Zirə FK (AZE) 1-1 (1-0)
(Matković 38'; Utzig 90'+6 (pen))

Two Croatian youth internationals combined for Osijek's opener, Anton
Matković slotted in Domagoj Bukvić's well-weighted assist:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459588/29199-Record_2024_08_08_23_29_09_293.mp4
but in stoppage time Osijek's Portuguese centre-back André Duarte
tripped Raphael Utzig exactly on the line of the box, and the Brazilian
converted the ensuing penalty himself.

PFC Botev (BUL) v HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH)* 2-1 (1-0)
(Akere 35', Maraš 79'; Ćuže 77')

Young Nigerian winger Samuel Akere scored the opener with a brilliant
strike from 20 metres into the top corner. Former Dinamo Zagreb youth
product Mario Ćuže got the equaliser with an equally good curled shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459589/29136-Record_2024_08_08_21_46_56_439.mp4
A bad pass in defence still gifted the Bulgarians the winner, scored by
the young Montenegrin substitute Aleksa Maraš.

NK Maribor (SLO)* v FK Vojvodina (SRB) 2-1 (0-0)
(Iličić 59', Soudani 90'+8; Zady Sery 77';
Red Card: Medojević (Voj) 70')

Just after the Serbians had missed a one-on-one with Maribor keeper Jug
the Slovenians were awarded a penalty when Vojvodina's Romanian right-
back Mihai Butean mistimed his tackle on Rapid Wien youth product Marko
Božić, and despite Lazar Carević saving Josip Iličić's initial spot kick
Vojvodina's Montenegrin keeper was helpless against the veteran's
rebound. Former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt midfielder Slobodan Medojević
then saw a red card for a pointless two-footed challenge on Jan Repas,
but ten-man Vojvodina managed to score the equaliser when their Ivorian
winger Caleb Zady Sery tunnelled Maribor's Lithuanian right-back Pijus
Širvys and played a quick one-two with his Nigerian strike partner
Bamidele Yusuf:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459591/29217-Record_2024_08_09_06_24_47_541.mp4
Širvys made amends in stoppage time and delivered the cross that
longtime former Dinamo Zagreb winger and Algeria international Hillal
Soudani headed in to seal the 32nd defeat for a Serbian team in just
the last two European seasons (they went 1-2-25 in 23/24 and are
currently 1-0-7 this year).

FC Spartak Trnava (SLK)* v TS Wisła Kraków (POL) 3-1 (0-1)
(Ďuriš 47', 68', Azango 60'; Rodado 26')

The other second division team left in the competition had to survive
a scare when early on VAR cancelled a Spartak penalty for a foul in
the build-up, but like Corvinul they then took the lead as well - after
a shot by Wisła Spanish winger Ángel Baena had been blocked by Spartak's
Slovenian keeper Žiga Frelih Baena's namesake and fellow countryman
Ángel Rodado tapped the loose ball into the empty net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459592/29109-Record_2024_08_08_20_57_14_323.mp4
Michal Ďuriš got the equaliser right after the break with a fine turn-
and-shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459592/29131-Record_2024_08_08_21_37_46_276.mp4
and Nigerian winger Philip Azango also volleyed into a gaping net after
the Wisła defence had failed to stop Roman Procházka properly:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459592/29145-Record_2024_08_08_21_50_32_496.mp4
Minutes later Rodado volleyed against the post for Wisła, and instead
the Slovakians scored their third, with Ďuriš stabbing in a precise
cross by Martin Mikovič. At least the Poles had a bit more luck in
stoppage time, as a Mikovič drive went off the crossbar, against the
back of Wisła keeper Broda, and once more against the post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459592/29166-Record_2024_08_08_22_22_05_314.mp4

St Patrick's Athletic FC (IRL) v Sabah FK (AZE)* 1-0 (1-0)
(Palmer 35'; Red Card: Lepinjica 53')

A sign of life from Irish club football. Romal Palmer slid into Jake
Mulraney's in-swinging cross for the winner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459594/29203-Record_2024_08_08_23_36_17_838.mp4
and the Azeri surprise package rarely threatened, especially after their
Croatian midfielder Ivan Lepinjica was sent off with a second yellow.
But St Pat's also failed to push their numerical advantage.

St Mirren FC (SCO) v SK Brann (NOR)* 1-1 (0-0)
(Olusanya 90'; Myhre 75')

The other Scottish-Norwegian duel also ended with a stoppage time
equaliser for the former. Felix Horn Myhre had volleyed Brann into the

but the English substitute Toyosi Olusanya slid into James Scott's
centre to level the score.

Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round, 2nd leg
* = seeded team
Teams in CAPITALS (except AEK) go to ConfLPO (Champions and Main Path)

August 13

Main Path

Paide Linnameeskond (EST) v BK HÄCKEN (SWE)* 1-1 (1-1) 2-7 on aggregate
(Saarma 33'; Lundqvist 7')

Despite an auspicious start - Adam Lundqvist's shot was deflected into
the net just seven minutes in - Häcken failed to score six this time,
but I suppose they can live with that. The Estonians also ended their
European campaign on a positive note as Robi Saarma's solo run on the
break gave them the equaliser.

FK Mornar Bar (MNE) v PAKSI FC (HUN)* 2-2 (2-1), 2-5 on aggregate
(Lenzser 18' (og), Zorić 60'; Windecker 14' (pen), Zorić 86' (og))

A clumsy penalty due to a high boot by Mornar's Serbian right-back
Siniša Stevanović against Bence Lenzsér gave Paks the early lead, but
Lenzsér soon repaid the favour by steering in a cross by Mornar's
Japanese midfielder Kotaro Kishi, who had arrived in Montenegro via
Malta: Loading Image...
Darko Zorić even headed Mornar in front from a corner kick, but late on
Zorić also turned Krisztián Kovács's centre into his own net:

FC ASTANA (KAZ)* v CS Corvinul Hunedoara (ROM) 6-1 (1-0), 8-2 on aggregate
(Chinedu 13', 68', Tomasov 57', 76', Gripshi 73', Astanov 84';
Velisar 78')

The tie was still close in the first half even though the Romanians
conceded when they lost the ball in defence to Geoffrey Chinedu and the
Nigerian had no problems to slot past Corvinul keeper Ștefan Lefter. It
was only in the second half that the 2nd-division cup winners for the
first time actually looked like a 2nd-division team - the young
substitute Ionuț Pop failed to clear a long ball, which allowed Marin
Tomasov to steal in and score and earned Pop an earful from Lefter:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459598/29975-Record_2024_08_14_17_15_04_34.mp4
Chinedu tapped in Ousmane Camara's cross for the third, another lost
ball in front of their defence resulted in Nazmi Gripshi rifling in a
great shot into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459598/29980-Record_2024_08_14_17_31_40_279.mp4
and Tomasov was left all alone in the box to fire in a rocket over the
palms of Lefter:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459598/29981-Record_2024_08_14_17_33_41_331.mp4
Corvinul at least got a consolation goal when Mihai Velisar's very
likely mishit cross curved over Astana's Croatian keeper Čondrić:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459598/29986-Record_2024_08_14_17_51_38_443.mp4
The suitably named substitute Elkhan Astanov scored Astana's sixth on
the break.

Fehérvár FC (HUN) v AC OMONOIA (CYP)* 0-2 (0-1), 0-3 on aggregate
(Semedo 28', Kakoullis 90'+4)

French-born Cape Verdean international Willy Semedo tapped in a cross by
Serbian winger Veljko Simić:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459597/30008-Record_2024_08_14_19_23_48_212.mp4
and deep in stoppage time there was that rarest of things in matches
involving Cypriot teams, namely a goal that involved two Cypriot
players. Fehérvár keeper Balázs Tóth, who had been excellent up to that
point, awkwardly parried a shot by Charalampos Charalampous, and
Andronikos Kakoullis stabbed in from one centimetre out:

Champions Path

FC Flora (EST)* v KF VÍKINGUR (ISL) 1-2 (0-2), 2-3 on aggregate
(Soomets 52'; Þrándarson 6', Hansen 36')

Aron Elís Þrándarson nodded in from Karl Friðleifur Gunnarsson's corner
kick, and while VAR called off the Estonian equaliser for offside
Víkingur's Danish captain Nikolaj Hansen tapped in their second after
Valdimar Þór Ingimundarson had stolen in behind the Flora defence:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459599/30205-Record_2024_08_15_20_08_53_876.mp4
Markus Soomets reduced the arrears with a nice shot from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459599/30206-Record_2024_08_15_20_09_35_687.mp4
and a couple of minutes later Konstantin Vassiljev's header came off the
right post, but Víkingur held on to the result, so the last Estonian
team has been eliminated. An average season for them, but it should be
enough to avoid the bottom 5.

FC PYUNIK (ARM)* v FC Ordabasy (KAZ) 1-0 (0-0), 2-0 on aggregate
(Otubanjo 66')

Yusuf Otubanjo muscled his way past two Kazakh defenders before beating
Ordabasy keeper Shayzada:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459600/30308-Record_2024_08_15_22_31_55_401.mp4

LARNE FC (NIR) v KF Ballkani (KOS)* 0-1 aet (0-1, 0-1), 1-1 on
aggregate, Larne win 4-1 on penalties
(Hamidi 45' (pen); Red Cards: Donnelly (Lar, after the match);
Ismajlgeci (Bal, after the match))

For the longest time it looked as if the Northern Irish champions would
again mess up a historic chance as Algerian forward Walid Hamidi
cancelled out Larne's first-leg win thanks to a harsh penalty, but in
the shootout two Ballkani players, including Hamidi, missed their
efforts while the Northern Irish were perfect from the spot.

All Larne now have to do to reach a historic group phase is beating the
Lincoln Red Imps.

FK Dečić (MNE) v HJK (FIN)* 2-1 aet (1-1, 2-1), 2-2 on aggregate, HJK
win 4-3 on penalties
(Puleio 26', Mašović 90'+4; Plange 43')

Ian Puleio, who came to the Montenegrin Prva CFL from the fourth
Argentine tier, stole the ball off HJK defender Aapo Halme and rifled
into the top corner to level the aggregate score:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459621/30267-Record_2024_08_15_21_26_25_255.mp4
English youngster Luke Plange, who's been loaned around plenty by
Crystal Palace, capped off a solo run with a sumptuous shot to get
the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459621/30273-Record_2024_08_15_21_42_56_988.mp4
but a valiantly fighting Montenegrin side dragged the match to extra
time when Ognjen Stijepović headed on a cross by Dečić captain Jonathan
Drešaj and Alen Mašović tapped in at the far post. Unfortunately though
in the shoot-out both Stijepović and Drešaj missed their spot kicks.

A bit of a shame to see the last Montenegrin team go out like that.
Their three European entries have given a good account of themselves,
for once.

Main Path

Sabah FK (AZE)* v ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC FC (IRL) 0-1 (0-0), 0-2 on aggregate
(Elbouzedi 48'; Red Card: Chakla (Sab) 27')

Sabah's Moroccan centre-back Sofian Chakla got sent off for a bone-
headed two-footed challenge (would have been a red even if he hadn't
been the last man):
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459601/30121-Record_2024_08_15_18_26_56_595.mp4
and Zack Elbouzedi, back in Ireland after three years in Sweden, headed
in Jake Mulraney's cross for the win.

Only the second time in their history that St Pat's reach the last
play-off round just before a group phase. They last did so back in the
2009-10 inaugural Europa League season when they lost at that stage
against Steaua.

LEGIA WARSZAWA (POL)* v Brøndby IF (DEN) 1-1 (1-1), 4-3 on aggregate
(Pankov 45'+3; Wass 38' (pen))

Daniel Wass rolled in a handball penaty caused by Sergio Barcia, but a
free-kick by Rúben Vinagre, who's been loaned around by Sporting all
over Europe, was headed in by Legia's Serbian defender Radovan Pankov
for what proved to be the decisive goal, despite Brøndby having way
more of the game in the second half.

In the first leg, Brøndby fans had allowed Legia supporters into their
stadium despite the latter serving a UEFA ban. In the return leg,
Legia's Portuguese coach Gonçalo Feio reacted a bit differently to the
away fans: https://x.com/Meczykipl/status/1824171785170063798

ZIRƏ FK (AZE) v NK Osijek (CRO)* 2-2 aet (0-1, 2-2), 3-3 on aggregate,
Zirə win 2-1 on penalties
(Alıyev 54' (pen), Volkovi 90'; Jugović 37', Matković 81')

Osijek took the lead when Roko Jurišić's poorly defended low cross was
steered in by Vedran Jugović:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459603/30208-Record_2024_08_15_20_10_51_546.mp4
Qismət Alıyev equalised from the spot after Marko Soldo had brought
down Martins Júnior in the box, but the Croatians appeared to have
won it when Anton Matković nodded in the loose ball after a free-kick
had been inadvertently deflected by Kemal Ademi:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459603/30210-Record_2024_08_15_20_11_44_793.mp4
only for Zirə's Georgian striker Davit Volkovi to once more equalise
with a great scissor kick (turn down the volume):
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459603/30219-Record_2024_08_15_20_22_55_805.mp4
The shootout was a comedy of errors in which Osijek missed four out of
their five penalties, and Zirə only three (all of them saved by the
respective keepers).

Hapoel Be'er Sheva FC (ISR)* v FK MLADÁ BOLESLAV (CZE) 2-4 (2-0), 3-5 on
aggregate
(Ahmed 11', Lopes 42'; Ladra 49', 82', Králik 59', Kušej 90';
Red Cards: Tibi (Hap) 74', Shushenachev (Hap) 90'+3, Elias (Hap) 90'+10)

Mladá Boleslav hit the post early on through Vasil Kušej, but soon
afterwards Zahi Ahmed emphatically headed Be'er Sheva in front:
Loading Image...
Alon Turgeman's header was then deflected in from short range by
Portuguese left-back Hélder Lopes as the Israeli appeared to cruise
towards an easy qualification to the Conference League play-offs, but
the Czechs hit back after the break, and also from crosses - Tomáš Ladra
volleyed in after Daniel Mareček's header had come off the crossbar:
Loading Image...
and Slovakian centre-back Martin Králik headed in Kušej's corner kick.
Eitan Tibi then was sent off with a second yellow for an elbow to the
head of Mareček, and while from the ensuing free-kick Mareček only hit
the post, six minutes later Ladra did better with his free-kick and got
the decisive goal: Loading Image...
With ten-man Be'er Sheva chasing the equaliser (and forcing Mladá
Boleslav keeper Matouš Trmal into one great save), the Czechs hit them
on the break and Kušej tapped in Matěj Pulkrab's feed for the fourth.
The Israeli lost their heads after that and ended the match in eight as
their Kazakh substitute Artur Shushenachev saw a second yellow for a
rough challenge, and Shay Elias a straight red for a flying tackle.

Tromsø IL (NOR)* v KILMARNOCK FC (SCO) 0-1 (0-1), 2-3 on aggregate
(Skjærvik 11' (og))

In their only effort on goal all match, following a corner kick a
powerful header by Killie's Welsh centre-back Joe Wright header was
deflected in by Vetle Skjærvik for what turned out to be the winner.

Not counting the Fairs Cup, Kilmarnock have never won more than one
European tie in any given season. They could now break that streak
against FC Copenhagen.

SK BRANN (NOR)* v St Mirren FC (SCO) 3-1 (1-0), 4-2 on aggregate
(Soltvedt 5', Myhre 85', Heggebø 88'; Iacovitti 74')

The other Norwegian-Scottish clash went the the other way. Joachim
Soltvedt fired in following good work by Felix Myhre:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459601/30151-Record_2024_08_15_19_07_50_494.mp4
and despite Alex Iacovitti heading in a corner kick for the equaliser,
late on Myhre nodded in the winner from Niklas Castro's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459606/30238-Record_2024_08_15_20_45_33_3.mp4
and Aune Heggebø tunnelled St Mirren keeper Balcombe to put the result
out of reach:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459606/30239-Record_2024_08_15_20_47_57_995.mp4

In their fifth European adventure, St Mirren still have to survive
more than one round.

PAFOS FC (CYP)* v FC CSKA 1948 Sofia (BUL) 4-0 aet (0-0, 1-0), 5-2 on
aggregate
(Luckassen 90'+7, Jajá 94', Anderson Silva 100', Daskalov 118' (og);
Red Card: Furtado (CSK) 45'+2)

Just before half-time Cape Verde international Steve Furtado was sent
off with a second booking, and ten Bulgarians held on almost to the end,
but in the last minute of stoppage time after a goalmouth scramble
Dutchman Derrick Luckassen fired through the legs of CSKA 1948 keeper
Marinov:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459607/30244-Record_2024_08_15_20_57_16_859.mp4
The exhausted Bulgarian defence fell apart in extra time and allowed
Athletico-PR loanee Jajá to walk into the box and curl one past Marinov:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459607/30252-Record_2024_08_15_21_08_50_278.mp4
A shot by Anderson Silva, another Brazilian in the Mediterranean,
then squirmed in underneath Marinov:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459607/30260-Record_2024_08_15_21_14_28_616.mp4
and to add insult to injury Reyan Daskalov acrobatically sliced Pedro
Pelágio's cross into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459607/30272-Record_2024_08_15_21_39_33_537.mp4

DJURGÅRDENS IF (SWE)* v Tampereen Ilves (FIN) 3-1 (2-1), 4-2 on aggregate
(Šabović 14', Hümmet 43', Ståhl 52'; Riski 30')

Besard Šabović gave Djurgården the lead with a cracking finish into the
top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459608/30282-Record_2024_08_15_21_54_30_665.mp4
but their goalkeeper Zetterström gifted Ilves the equaliser by allowing
Roope Riski to intercept his poor pass:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459608/30283-Record_2024_08_15_21_55_11_255.mp4
Deniz Hümmet got the decisive goal by volleying in a corner kick, and
Adam Ståhl likewise nodded in following a corner.

Sweden are the lowest-ranked nation in the UEFA ranking to still have
all four teams alive.

FC CFR 1907 CLUJ (ROM)* v Maccabi Petah Tikva FC (ISR) 1-0 (0-0), 2-0 on
aggregate
(Krešić 50')

Anton Krešić fired in the rebound after Petah Tikva's Argentinian
goalkeeper Marcus Wolff had parried Ciprian Deac's free-kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459609/30328-Record_2024_08_15_23_16_39_395.mp4

Israel will have only one team in a European group stage while most of
the countries around them in the UEFA ranking will have three or four.
They're currently in 12th, the highest they've ever been, but it's
highly unlikely that they'll be able to hold on to that.

FC Baník Ostrava (CZE) v FC KØBENHAVN (DEN)* 1-0 aet (1-0, 1-0), 1-1 on
aggregate, FCK win 2-1 on penalties
(Prekop 42')

On the heels of last year's success the Czech teams continue to enjoy
a good European moment as even their Conference League entries Mladá
Boleslav and Baník gave good accounts of themselves. Slovakian forward
Erik Prekop sliced in David Buchta's cross for the aggregate equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459555/30180-Record_2024_08_15_19_43_10_188.mp4
but while the Czech Silesians continued to have more of the match and
better opportunities they couldn't find the breakthrough in the
remaining eighty minutes, and in the shoot-out Baník didn't do any
better from the spot than Osijek before them - they missed four out of
five penalties (one saved, three high), so the Danes only had to score
two out of four.

Copenhagen and the Danish UEFA coefficient dodged a major bullet there.

FC Sheriff (MDA) v NK OLIMPIJA LJUBLJANA (SLO)* 0-1 (0-0), 0-4 on aggregate
(Motika 88' (pen))

Bayern Munich-trained German-Serbian youngster Nemanja Motika earned and
converted a late penalty as the former group phase regulars Sheriff went
out with a whimper.

AEK FC (GRE)* v FC NOAH (ARM) 1-0 (0-0), 2-3 on aggregate
(Silva 90'+2 (og))

For the most part a helpless performance by AEK against the Armenian
wall, and even though Noah's Portuguese defender Gonçalo Silva under
pressure from Steven Zuber turned Paolo Fernandes's cross into his own
net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459612/30418-Record_2024_08_16_06_40_53_620.mp4
fourteen more minutes of stoppage time weren't enough for the Greeks to
get the second.

İSTANBUL BAŞAKŞEHIR FK (TUR)* v FC Iberia 1999 (GEO) 2-0 (0-0), 3-0 on
aggregate
(Piątek 50', Pelkas 61')

Two free-kicks by Greek veteran Dimitrios Pelkas decided the game - one
was headed in by Krzysztof Piątek:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459613/30291-Record_2024_08_15_22_06_22_892.mp4
and one went in directly:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459613/30293-Record_2024_08_15_22_06_53_339.mp4

The last Georgian team has been eliminated, the last (and only) time
one of their clubs has reached a European group phase was Dinamo Tbilisi
in the 2004-05 UEFA Cup.

FK Vojvodina (SRB) v NK MARIBOR (SLO)* 1-0 aet (1-0, 1-0), 2-2 on
aggregate, Maribor win 4-2 on penalties
(Crnomarković 26'; Red Card: Šimundža (Mar, manager) 27')

Đorđe Crnomarković's movements successfully bamboozled VAR:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459614/30294-Record_2024_08_15_22_09_44_873.mp4
which also led to Maribor coach Ante Šimundža being sent off for
protesting, but Vojvodina failed to add a second and in the shoot-out
the efforts by Lazar Nikolić and Mihailo Ivanović were punched out by
Maribor keeper Ažbe Jug.

Slovenia are the lowest-ranked league to still have three clubs in
contention for a Conference League spot.

KF DRITA (KOS)* v FK Auda (LAT) 3-1 aet (0-0, 1-0), 3-2 on aggregate
(Krasniqi 75' (pen), Broja 102', Dabiqaj 115'; Talla 91')

Auda's young Ivorian winger Abdoul Kader Traore clumsily pulled down
Drita's Congolese left-back Raddy Ovouka to concede the penalty that
led to extra time, where at first it looked like the Latvians would gain
the upper hand as their Senegalese forward Mor Talla scored one-on-one
with Drita keeper Maloku. But the Kosovars managed to turn the match
around thanks to two powerful headers by Rron Broja and Albert Dabiqaj.

HŠK ZRINJSKI MOSTAR (BIH)* v PFC Botev (BUL) 2-0 (1-0), 3-2 on aggregate
(Mulahusejnović 39', Kiš 83'; Red Card: Conte (Bot) 41')

Botev's new Danish keeper Hans Christian Bernat managed to hold on to
Frano Mlinar's poor penalty, but fifteen minutes later he was beaten by
Nardin Mulahusejnović's header. Guinea international and PSG youth
product Antoine Conte (whose Bulgarian exile might or might not have to
do with the prison term he's been sentenced to in his native France)
was sent off for retaliating against Matija Malekinušić, and against ten
men Croatian journeyman Tomislav Kiš rolled in Mario Ćuže's cross for
the aggregate winner.

Bosnia and Herzegovina are the lowest-ranked league with more than one
club still alive, a good development after years and years of European
disappointment.

TS WISŁA KRAKÓW (POL) v FC Spartak Trnava (SLK)* 3-1 aet (1-0, 2-0), 4-4
on aggregate, Wisła win 12-11 on penalties
(Rodado 43' (pen), Starzyński 60', Uryga 98'; Ďuriš 107')

Spartak's Nigerian winger Philip Azango clipped Wisła's Hungarian
forward Tamás Kiss at the edge of the area to concede a penalty, and
Piotr Starzyński punished amateur defending by the Slovakians:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459617/30296-Record_2024_08_15_22_11_11_423.mp4
to cancel out the two-goal first-leg defeat for the Polish 2nd-division
cup winners. In extra time Wisła captain Alan Uryga headed in a corner
kick for the aggregate lead, but for once Spartak, who showed a terrible
performance, were able to hit back as Azango made some amends for his
earlier mistakes and Michal Ďuriš rifled in his low cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459617/30322-Record_2024_08_15_23_05_44_71.mp4
But for Ajax and Panathinaikos the very same evening the shootout
would have become the joint record holder for longest in a European
competition as Wisła and Spartak went through all eleven players,
including the goalkeepers, before Sebastián Kóša decisively missed
Spartak's 14th attempt (and 28th overall).

KAA GENT (BEL)* v Silkeborg IF (DEN) 3-2 aet (1-1, 2-2), 5-4 on aggregate
(Dean 38', Gandelman 90'+3, 118'; Adamsen 33', 51' (pen))

As in the first leg the sides freely exchanged goals - Tonni Adamsen
back-heeled in a cross by Danish-born Peruvian international Oliver
Sonne to give Silkeborg the lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459618/30300-Record_2024_08_15_22_18_07_124.mp4
and Gent got the equaliser when Silkeborg keeper Nicolai Larsen pushed
Sven Kums's cross onto the foot of Max Dean:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459618/30299-Record_2024_08_15_22_17_12_999.mp4
The Danes went in front again when Gent's Angolan winger Núrio Fortuna
tripped Mads Larsen in the box to concede a penalty, but in stoppage
time Silkeborg messed up their offside trap and the Israeli substitute
Omri Gandelman was left all alone to chest down Archie Brown's assist
and fire past Larsen:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459618/30301-Record_2024_08_15_22_19_22_429.mp4
Similarly, just minutes before the end of extra time Brown once more fed
Gandelman with a cross and the Israeli did a 180 turn and at the second
attempt stabbed the ball past Larsen:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459618/30381-Record_2024_08_15_23_58_56_313.mp4

WKS Śląsk Wrocław (POL)* v FC ST. GALLEN 1879 (SUI) 3-2 (3-1), 3-4 on
aggregate
(Schwarz 41', Samiec-Talar 43', Petkov 45'+2; Toma 21',
Geubbels 90'+18 (pen); Red Cards: Petkov (Ślą) 77', Nahuel (Ślą) 90'+12,
Ortiz (Ślą) 90'+22)

This match ran the full gamut of VAR madness. Just ten minutes in the
video ref had already cancelled a Śląsk goal for a borderline foul, but
it looked like smooth sailing for the Swiss when Bastien Toma fired one
in for St. Gallen on the break. Still, three goals in quick succession
just before half-time levelled the aggregate score - Śląsk's Czech
midfielder Petr Schwarz slid into Mateusz Żukowski's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459619/30257-Record_2024_08_15_21_11_44_831.mp4
youngster Piotr Samiec-Talar curled a great shot past St. Gallen's
Ghanaian keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459619/30259-Record_2024_08_15_21_13_39_390.mp4
and Śląsk's Bulgarian captain Aleks Petkov headed in a free-kick
delivered by Schwarz.

In the second half the match had to be interrupted for a couple of
minutes due to racist insults from hardcore Śląsk fans towards Ati-Zigi,
but the true turning point came after 75 minutes when the Croatian
referee initially awarded the Silesians a penalty, but cancelled it
following a VAR check and instead showed Petkov a second yellow for
diving. The controversies were far from over though as deep in stoppage
time VAR and the ref decided on a very harsh handball call against
Śląsk's Spanish winger Nahuel, who in the process also saw a red card
for his role in the ensuing scuffle - and after Rafał Leszczyński had
saved Christian Witzig's spot kick it was again VAR who piped up to
report that the Polish keeper had left the goal line and that the
penalty had to be retaken. Willem Geubbels made no mistake from the spot
the second time around, but that still wasn't the end as in the 22nd (!)
minute of stoppage time Śląsk's other Spaniard Arnau Ortiz took a tumble
in the box following a challenge from Isaac Schmidt, and the ref once
more showed a second yellow for diving. There definitely was contact
there.

After the final whistle both referee team and St. Gallen players ran for
their lives into the stadium tunnels.

PUSKÁS AKADÉMIA FC (HUN)* v FC Ararat-Armenia (ARM) 3-3 (1-2), 4-3 on
aggregate
(Nagy 7', 47', Favorov 90'+4; Serobyan 39', Harutyunyan 43', Duarte 85';
Red Card: Nondi (Ara) 62')

The match with the best goals.

Zsolt Nagy ran onto a wayward defensive header and scored with a rocket
into the top corner to give the Hungarians an early two-goal aggregate
lead, but two amazing goals brought the Armenians back into the match -
Artur Serobyan scored with an excellent free-kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459622/30292-Record_2024_08_15_22_06_28_147.mp4
and Hovhannes Harutyunyan likewise sent a great curled shot from the
corner of the box in underneath the crossbar. Nagy put the Puskás
Academy in front again, for once with a simple tap-in, and the tie
looked done and dusted when Ararat-Armenia's Kenyan midfielder Amos
Nondi was sent off for throwing an elbow against Academy captain Roland
Szolnoki. The Hungarians then also saw a goal cancelled by VAR, but ten
Armenians still managed to score the equaliser, and again thanks to a
wonder strike, this time by the Colombian substitute Jonathan Duarte.
Still, fittingly for this match the Puskás Akadémia got the winner in
stoppage time thanks to a perfectly struck free-kick by Ukrainian
forward Artem Favorov:

HNK Hajduk Split (CRO)* v MFK RUŽOMBEROK (SLK) 0-1 (0-1), 0-1 on aggregate
(Šarlija 7' (og); Red Card: Uremović (Haj) 90'+9)

This time around Ivan Rakitić started for Hajduk, but it was the
Slovakians who got the decisive goal already early on when after a
corner kick Zvonimir Šarlija awkwardly volleyed into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459623/30253-Record_2024_08_15_21_08_59_174.mp4
Hajduk missed a ton of chances to equalise, and so after Rijeka's loss
and Osijek's elimination this was the next blow for the Croatian
coefficient. I wonder how long Gennaro Gattuso will last in Split.

So rather than the expected AEK vs Hajduk we'll instead get a Conference
League playoff between Noah and Ružomberok. I like it.

VITÓRIA SC (POR)* v FC Zürich (SUI) 2-0 (0-0), 5-0 on aggregate
(M. Silva 58', Arcanjo 70')

Manu Silva curled one in from distance and Telmo Arcanjo, the umpteenth
Cape Verdean player to feature in these qualifiers, tapped in the
rebound from a shot by Venezuelan striker Jesús Ramirez:

Will Portugal finally bring their fifth team into a group phase? They'll
have to if they want to aim for something higher than 7th in the UEFA

Sweden are the lowest-ranked nation in the UEFA ranking to still have
all four teams alive.
According to those who keep track, first time we have 4 teams this far.

For those who don't know, "feio" means ugly in Portugese, so it's fitting.

Tchau!

FC Noah (ARM)* v MFK Ružomberok (SLK) 3-0 (1-0)
(Gregório 4', Manvelyan 79' (pen), Matheus Aiás 90'+3)

A fully deserved win for Noah. A misunderstanding between Ružomberok
centre-back Ján Maslo and his keeper Tomáš Frühwald allowed Noah's
Portuguese forward Gonçalo Gregório to poke the loose ball home:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461714/31208-Record_2024_08_20_18_57_24_701.mp4
Frühwald then parried Gregório's close-range header with a miraculous
save, but later also lost the ball to him when he misplayed a back pass,
but from a tight angle the Portuguese's shot agonizingly trickled
against the post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461714/31216-Record_2024_08_20_19_13_49_389.mp4
The floodlights then gave out in Abovyan, a small town northeast of
Yerevan, but when they came back on Noah scored two more, one from a
handball penalty converted by Nantes-trained Gor Manvelyan, and one
in stoppage time when a corner kick by Frenchman Virgile Pinson was
headed into his own net by Alexander Selecký:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461714/31242-Record_2024_08_20_20_17_18_784.mp4
Noah's Brazilian substitute Matheus Aiás got a touch to the ball, but it
would have gone in regardless.

It appears as if the runners-up of the Armenian Premier League will go
from the first Conference League Qualification Round all the way to the
group phase. Not bad!

Vitória SC (POR)* v HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH) 3-0 (0-0)
(Mangas 46', Borevković 51', Mendes 88')

Easy win for the team from Guimarães even though they had to wait until
the second half to get on the scoresheet. Ricardo Mangas tapped in
Tiago Silva's low cross, and five minutes later Vitória's Croatian
centre-back Toni Borevković (I remember him from the Covid season when
he was the main culprit for Rio Ave's Europa League playoff exit against
Milan) headed in a corner kick, again delivered by Tiago Silva. Late on
the substitute João Mendes volleyed in a loose ball for the third.

Portugal's fifth team finally delivers. Vitória still haven't conceded a
goal in these qualifiers.

Champions Path

FC Pyunik (ARM)* v NK Celje (SLO) 1-0 (0-0)
(Buhari 59')

Nigerian youngster Sani Buhari capped off a solo run with a sumptuous
shot past Celje keeper Rozman:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461716/31393-Record_2024_08_22_19_20_00_908.mp4
as Armenia's excellent European moment continued. It's already been
their best season ever, and they now have the realistic chance to bring
two teams into the Conference League group phase.

FK Panevėžys (LTU) v The New Saints FC (WAL)* 0-3 (0-0)
(Davies 52', Williams 64', Clark 90'+1)

Danny Davies headed in from a corner kick, Daniel Williams cut through
the Lithuanian defence to beat Panevėžys keeper Černiauskas:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461719/31450-Record_2024_08_22_20_30_12_747.mp4
and late on the substitute Ben Clark tapped in a cross by West Ham youth
product Josh Pask:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461719/31542-Record_2024_08_23_00_04_21_909.mp4
as The New Saints are just 90 minutes away from Wales's first ever
European league phase. The reforms have made it easier, but still,
congrats!

Panevėžys on the other hand will likely suffer the dreaded triple
elimination (out in CLQ, ELQ, and ConfLQ) - not a first for a Lithuanian
team - and can now fully focus on avoiding the drop in the A Lyga.

Also, with this win Wales have overtaken North Macedonia and escaped
the Bottom 5 in the UEFA Ranking, so will again have four teams in
Europe in two seasons' time (North Macedonia on the other hand will
continue to have just three).

KF Víkingur (ISL)* v UE Santa Coloma (AND) 5-0 (1-0)
(Hansen 29', 90'+6, Ingimundarson 53' (pen), 75', Vatnhamar 66';
Red Card: García (UES) 45'+1)

The first half was still OK for the Andorran champions even though
Víkingur's Danish captain Nikolaj Hansen tapped in a cross by young
winger Ari Sigurpálsson, but everything fell apart after Christian
García, one of the few Andorrans in UESC's squad, had brought down
Hansen as last man in the box, and VAR turned the initial yellow into a
red card. Despite Aron Elís Þrándarson missing the ensuing penalty
Víkingur left ten Andorrans no chance in the second half, and when they
were awarded another penalty for a handball Valdimar Þór Ingimundarson
made no mistake from the spot. Gunnar Vatnhamar, brother of Faroe
Island's Víkingur mainstay Sølvi Vatnhamar, tapped in a corner kick at
the far post for the third. The Icelandic champions and current league
leaders then were even awarded a third penalty, again for a handball,
but this time around Valdimar Þór fired over the crossbar. No matter,
as ten minutes later he slid in to turn Aron Elís's centre over the
line. Hansen also got his second late on from yet another cross.

Oh well, an Andorran team in a group phase was always a longshot. On
the other hand, Iceland will send a team to the Conference League group
phase for the second year in a row. I guess the distinct possibility of
this happening has been one of the reasons why unlike the new
Champions and Europa League the Conference League won't have matchdays
in January?

KÍ (FAR) v HJK (FIN)* 2-2 (0-1)
(Frederiksberg 55' (pen), Hansson 63'; Erwin 14', 90'+2;
Red Card: Joensen (KÍ) 39')

Scotsman Lee Erwin side-stepped three Klaksvík defenders before sending
a perfect shot into the top corner to give the Finnish champions the
lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461733/31574-Record_2024_08_23_10_06_17_895.mp4
and things got even worse for the Faroese when René Joensen was sent off
with a second yellow for a pointless foul in midfield. Still, ten-man
Klaksvík managed to turn the match around in the second half. Árni
Frederiksberg calmly converted from the spot after HJK's young Estonian
substitute Kevor Palumets had awkwardly handled a cross in the box,
and Hallur Hansson fired in the loose ball after the Finnish defence
had failed to clear a long throw-in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461733/31577-Record_2024_08_23_10_08_23_803.mp4
Still, in stoppage time HJK got the equaliser when Erwin's fierce volley
was slightly deflected on its way in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461733/31578-Record_2024_08_23_10_09_09_915.mp4

Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB) v Larne FC (NIR)* 2-1 (2-1)
(Gómez 23', Joe 42'; Lusty 16')

With the Victoria Stadium still undergoing redevelopment and Europa
Point Stadium no longer suitable for the playoffs, the Gibraltarians
went to their usual fallback option and played this in the Estádio
Algarve in Faro, Portugal. Larne's young striker Matthew Lusty gave the
Northern Irish the lead with a blast from distance that went in off the
underside of the crossbar:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461726/31579-Record_2024_08_23_11_57_33_978.mp4
Red Imps mainstay Kike Gómez, who a bit contrary to my expectations has
never actually been called up by the Philippines, slotted in the
equaliser following a great assist by Joe:

and the Imps' veteran Spanish midfielder got the winner by volleying in
a free-kick from fellow countryman Toni:

Legia Warszawa (POL) v KF Drita (KOS) 2-0 (0-0)
(Kramer 56', Gual 83'; Red Card: Gomda (Dri) 31')

Drita's young Ghanaian centre-back Hasan Gomda, previously playing on
Malta, wrestled down Legia's new signing from Ligue 2 Migouel Alfarela,
and following a VAR check was sent off for DOGSO. Against ten Kosovars,
a dominant Legia side needed a little time to make their numerical
superiority count, but finally did so when their Slovenian striker
Blaž Kramer headed in Paweł Wszołek's volleyed cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461717/31407-Record_2024_08_22_19_39_20_278.mp4

FK Mladá Boleslav (CZE)* v Paksi FC (HUN) 2-2 (0-0)
(Kinyik 65' (og), Ladra 90'+7; Böde 80', Papp 85';
Red Card: Lenzsér (Pak) 90'+6)

The Czechs took a deserved lead when Ákos Kinyik under pressure from
Mladá Boleslav's Zambian midfielder Benson Sakala turned Vasil Kušej's
centre into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461718/31395-Record_2024_08_22_19_24_28_99.mp4
Paks have come quite a way though compared to the first match of their
European campaign where they lost heavily against a Romanian 2nd-
division side, and they turned the game around with two late goals -
Dániel Böde evaded a poor challenge by Dominik Kostka to fire past
Mladá Boleslav keeper Trmal:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461718/31409-Record_2024_08_22_19_42_59_305.mp4
and Kristof Papp tapped in Böde's cross at the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461718/31416-Record_2024_08_22_19_48_20_118.mp4
Still, in the last minute of stoppage time Bence Lenzsér saw a second
yellow for stepping on the foot of the Gambian substitute Lamin Jawo
near the penalty box, and Tomáš Ladra curled the ensuing free-kick
perfectly into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461718/31416-Record_2024_08_22_19_48_20_118.mp4

AC Omonoia (CYP)* v Zirə FK (AZE) 6-0 (3-0)
(Khammas 13', Semedo 34' (pen), 70', Stępiński 45'+1, 54', Ewandro 60')

One kind of wonders what happened to the team that eliminated Osijek and
Dunajská Streda and also pushed Sheriff to penalties, because they were
hopeless on Cyprus. Belgian-Moroccan left-back Amine Khammas gave
Omonoia the lead with a perfectly-struck free-kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461720/31390-Record_2024_08_22_19_14_34_116.mp4
The Cypriots were then awarded a penalty when Zirə's Portuguese keeper
Tiago Silva clotheslined Novica Eraković on the goal line, and while
Silva made amends by keeping out Willy Semedo's spot kick he was
betrayed by his centre-back Ruan Renato who had entered the area about
two seconds early. In the repeat attempt Semedo calmly sent Silva the
other way. Mariusz Stępiński scored either side of half-time by slotting
in feeds from Ewandro and Veljko Simić, Stępiński returned the favour
for Ewandro's fifth, and Semedo got his second of the night from a free-
kick routine:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461720/31449-Record_2024_08_22_20_28_55_907.mp4

Djurgårdens IF (SWE)* v NK Maribor (SLO) 1-0 (0-0)
(Nguen 69'; Red Card: Šoštarič Karič (Mar) 89')

Norwegian striker Tokmac Nguen, back in Scandinavia after five years
with Ferencváros, fired in the only goal from Deniz Hümmet's cut-back
cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461721/31556-Record_2024_08_23_00_42_03_399.mp4
Late on Maribor centre-back Sven Šoštarič Karič was sent off for
breaking up a counter-attack as last-man.

SK Brann (NOR) v FC Astana (KAZ)* 2-0 (1-0)
(Myhre 12', Finne 70')

Aune Heggebø lobbed a great ball over the Kazakh defence and Felix Horn
Myhre beat Astana's Croatian keeper Čondrić at the second attempt:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461722/31389-Record_2024_08_22_19_13_21_641.mp4
In the second half Bård Finne found himself in miles of space to collect
Niklas Castro's centre and fire in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461722/31447-Record_2024_08_22_20_26_48_479.mp4

It's shaping up to become another very good season for Norway. They can
actually try and aim for the Top 10 in the UEFA Ranking.

BK Häcken (SWE) v 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 (GER)* 1-2 (1-1)
(Rygaard 36'; Conteh 31', Scienza 65')

In their European debut Heidenheim took the lead when new signing from
Paderborn Sirlord Conteh stole the ball off Häcken's Norwegian centre-
back Marius Lode:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461723/31461-Record_2024_08_22_20_54_17_976.mp4
but the Swedes soon got the equaliser through Danish midfielder Mikkel
Rygaard who beat Heidenheim's young reserve keeper Frank Feller with a
shot from the edge of the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461723/31462-Record_2024_08_22_20_54_32_469.mp4
Brazilian Léo Scienza, last season's 3. Liga assist leader, still got
Heidenheim the winner with a precise shot that curled past Häcken keeper
Abrahamsson and went in off the far post.

FC København (DEN)* v Kilmarnock FC (SCO) 2-0 (0-0)
(Diks 77' (pen), Falk 90'+6)

Typical Scottish heartbreak as FCK were awarded a controversial VAR
penalty after David Watson had been adjudged to have caught Moi
Elyounoussi on the calf. Deep in stoppage time Kilmarnock also failed to
properly clear a corner kick, and Rasmus Falk volleyed in the loose
ball:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461724/31464-Record_2024_08_22_20_57_02_769.mp4

FC CFR 1907 Cluj (ROM)* v Pafos FC (CYP) 1-0 (1-0)
(Korenica 17'; Red Card: Deac (Clu) 40')

Former Ballkani winger Meriton Korenica gave Cluj the opening goal with
a great shot from distance, but after Ciprian Deac had been sent off for
a retaliatory punch against João Correia the Romanians were content with
protecting their slim lead.

HNK Rijeka (CRO) v NK Olimpija Ljubljana (SLO)* 1-1 (1-0)
(Ivanović 33'; Pedro Lucas 76' (pen))

Almost a derby. After Rijeka had already hit the crossbar from Marco
Pašalić's direct corner kick Franjo Ivanović gave them the lead with a
nice shot into the far corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461728/31454-Record_2024_08_22_20_34_12_404.mp4
but they conceded the equaliser from the spot after young substitute
Gabriel Rukavina had brought down Jorge Silva, one of Olimpija's
Portuguese contingent, in the box.

ACF Fiorentina (ITA)* v Puskás Akadémia FC (HUN) 3-3 (1-2)
(Sottil 45'+3, Martínez Quarta 67', Kean 75'; Nagy 9' (pen),
Soisalo 12', Golla 89')

Just twelve minutes in the Hungarian underdogs were already two goals
up. Fiorentina's young right-back Michael Kayode with a late challenge
brought down Zsolt Nagy in the box, and Nagy converted the ensuing
penalty himself, and Finnish winger Mikael Soisalo capped off a counter-
attack with a shot that went over the arms of David De Gea:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461729/31435-Record_2024_08_22_20_13_36_350.mp4
Soisalo then also failed to target the empty net after he had rounded
De Gea, and the Hungarians came to rue that miss when Riccardo Sottil
bent a shot past Akadémia keeper Ármin Pécsi in stoppage time of the
first half:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461729/31457-Record_2024_08_22_20_49_28_690.mp4
Fiorentina were improved after the break, and they got the equaliser
through Lucas Martínez Quarta who headed in a Mandragora corner kick, as
well as the lead when following a lost ball Moise Kean beat Pécsi with
an angled shot on the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461729/31540-Record_2024_08_23_00_01_40_484.mp4
The Hungarians still scored the surprising late equaliser when their
Polish centre-back Wojciech Golla headed in Urho Nissilä's corner kick.

FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih (UKR) v Real Betis Balompié (ESP)* 0-2 (0-1)
(Ávila 13', Rodri 62')

Former Osasuna striker Chimy Ávila tapped in the rebound after Kryvbas
keeper Klishchuk had saved Sergi Altamira's shot:

to give the Andalusian favourites a comfortable win.

FK Partizan (SRB) v KAA Gent (BEL)* 0-1 (0-1)
(Gandelman 16')

Omri Gandleman bundled Sven Kums's cross over the line for the sole
goal: Loading Image...
Partizan' best chance to equalise came in the dying seconds, but
Gent keeper Roef parried Đorđe Jovanović's point-blank effort.

It's remarkable - with only one round of qualification matches left
Serbia still have the overall worst UEFA coefficient this year, a mere
0.500 (2 wins, 1 draw, 10 defeats), behind even San Marino (0.666).

TS Wisła Kraków (POL) v Cercle Brugge KSV (BEL)* 1-6 (0-3)
(Rodado 84'; Minda 8', Somers 11', Ravych 37', Denkey 47', Ouattara 55',
Olaigbe 82')

A bit like with Corvinul in the previous round this was where the 2nd-
division team finally looked like a 2nd-division team. Ecuadorian Alan
Minda scored with a curled effort and Cercle captain Thibo Somers
surprised Wisła keeper Broda with a shot from a very tight angle to
give the Belgians an early two-goal lead, and following a corner kick
Christiaan Ravych tapped in the rebound after Broda had saved Somers's
deflected header. Early in the second half Togolese striker Kévin Denkey
fired in underneath the crossbar after the Wisła defence had once more
lost the ball, and the Poles also weren't inclined to bother Burkinabé
youngster Abdoul Kader Ouattara as he teed up to bend a shot past Broda.
Since nothing went right for Wisła in this match Kazeem Olaigbe's free-
kick went in off the back of Karol Dziedzic for Cercle's sixth, but the
Poles at least got a consolation goal when their two Spaniards combined,
with Ángel Baena setting up namesake Ángel Rodado.

This was the fourth-biggest away win by a Belgian team in the history of
European cups.

St Patrick's Athletic FC (IRL) v İstanbul Başakşehir FK (TUR)* 0-0 (0-0)

Not a bad result at all for the Irish, and it could have even better if
Kian Leavy's long-range effort hadn't come off the post.

FC St. Gallen 1879 (SUI) v Trabzonspor (TUR)* 0-0 (0-0)

Unlike the other two the third Swiss-Turkish tie was a bit boring.
Trabzonspor had more and better opportunities, but Willem Geubbels could
still have won it late on for St. Gallen but his header was disallowed
for a push.

Racing Club de Lens (FRA)* v Panathinaikos FC (GRE) 2-1 (2-0)
(Frankowski 4', Saïd 34'; Ioannidis 53'; Red Card: Medina (Len) 20')

Przemysław Frankowski calmly pushed a shot past his Polish countryman
in the Panathinaikos net Bartłomiej Drągowski to give Lens the early
lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461736/31468-Record_2024_08_22_21_05_01_42.mp4
and despite being reduced to ten after Facundo Medina had been sent off
by VAR for stomping on the ankle of Tasos Bakasetas the French managed
to make it two when Wesley Saïd tapped in Adrien Thomasson's cross at
the second attempt, thereby nullifying Drągowski amazing save:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461736/31474-Record_2024_08_22_21_36_43_431.mp4
Panathinaikos at least managed to pull one back in the second half
thanks to Fotis Ioannidis's great solo run:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461736/31487-Record_2024_08_22_22_17_20_372.mp4

Chelsea FC (ENG)* v Servette FC (SUI) 2-0 (0-0)
(Nkunku 50' (pen), Madueke 76')

Chelsea's B team took quite a while to gel, and Servette were the better
team in the first half but were denied by Filip Jörgensen, one of
Chelsea's army of goalkeepers. The Londoners were clearly better after
the break and took the lead after Servette keeper Jérémy Frick had
felled Christopher Nkunku alone in front of goal, and Nkunku converted
the penalty himself. In the Europa League post I have called Dion
Beljo's wasted chance for Rapid against Braga the miss of the season so
far, but youngster Marc Guiu gave it a run for of its money:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461737/31492-Record_2024_08_22_22_28_50_249.mp4
Perhaps he was channelling his inner Fernando Torres there.
Nevertheless, Chelsea still made it two when Enzo Fernández found Noni
Madueke with a ball over the top, and the England Under-21 international
fired in at the near post. An unlucky Servette side late on hit the
crossbar through the young substitute Tiemoko Ouattara.

It is definitely in Chelsea's own interest to succeed in the unbeloved
Conference League - points collected here can go a long way in
determining the two best European leagues in the UEFA ranking this year,
and with it the corresponding extra Champions League spot.

HJK vs Molde and Víkingur vs Djurgården both on December 12 are
striking. Perhaps UEFA told the computer to let the Nordics sort out
their winter games among themselves?

No such thing in the Europa League BTW, Bodø/Glimt host Maccabi Tel Aviv
on January 23, and there's also Elfsborg vs Nice on the same day at 9pm.

Conference League Playoff, 2nd leg
* = seeded team
Teams in CAPITALS (except KÍ) go to ConfL Group Phase

August 28

Main Path

İSTANBUL BAŞAKŞEHIR FK (TUR)* v St Patrick's Athletic FC (IRL) 2-0
(0-0), 2-0 on aggregate
(Şahiner 64', Kemen 82'; Red Card: Bolger (StP) 81')

The Irish underdogs, whose domestic season has been pretty poor so far,
held on to the scoreless draw for another hour, but they finally
conceded when Ömer Ali Şahiner collected a loose ball in the box,
skipped a challenge, and beat St Pat's keeper Joseph Anang from close
range:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461738/32237-Record_2024_08_28_20_28_49_104.mp4
Late on the substitute Aaron Bolger was sent off for a cynical tackle
from behind on Olivier Kemen to break up a counter attack, and the
Cameroonian a minute later got his revenge by heading in Başakşehir's
second.

KAA GENT (BEL)* v FK Partizan (SRB) 1-0 (0-0), 2-0 on aggregate
(Delorge 88')

Youngster Mathias Delorge curled in the late winner to end Partizan's
European campaign on a dismal note:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461739/32234-Record_2024_08_28_20_21_26_117.mp4

Partizan suffer the dreaded triple exit, having in turn been eliminated
by Dynamo Kyiv (CL), Lugano (EL), and now Gent, racking up five defeats
and one draw. It's only thanks to Red Star that Serbia are no longer
bottom of the 1-year-ranking.

Now that Slovan Bratislava have moved up to the Champions League Gent
are the only remaining team to play in the Conference League group phase
every year since its inception 2021/22, the fourth time in a row.

August 29

Champions Path

HJK (FIN)* v KÍ (FAR) 2-1 (0-0), 4-3 on aggregate
(Tomas 90', Erwin 90'+3; Frederiksberg 57'; Red Card: Yambéré (KÍ) 59')

Awwwww. Who else but Árni Frederiksberg to give Klaksvík the lead with
a trademark great shot into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461741/32531-Record_2024_08_29_22_09_49_271.mp4
but as in the first leg the Faroese weakened themselves as Central
African Republic international Cédric Yambéré despite the experience of
more than hundred Ligue 1 matches under his belt, and in his last match
for Klaksvík before returning to bankrupt Girondins Bordeaux, got sent
off for an idiotic high foot that hit the stomach of HJK's Greek
midfielder Georgios Kanellopoulos. Still, the Faroese champions (it's
unlikely that they'll defend their title, Víkingur are currently twelve
points ahead) held on almost to the end, but in stoppage time they
fell - Diogo Tomas slid in to turn a centre by Lucas Lingman over the
line:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461741/32535-Record_2024_08_29_22_10_40_233.mp4
and three minutes later Lingman also provided the cross that Scotsman
Lee Erwin stabbed in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461741/32536-Record_2024_08_29_22_11_39_390.mp4

THE NEW SAINTS FC (WAL)* v FK Panevėžys (LTU) 0-0 (0-0), 3-0 on aggregate
(Red Card: Rasimavičius (Pan) 62')

An already impossible task for Panevėžys wasn't made any easier by Rokas
Rasimavičius's second yellow.

Welcome to European football in autumn, Cymru Premier! Fly the dragon!
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461748/32651-Record_2024_08_30_06_20_28_80.mp4

UE Santa Coloma (AND) v KF VÍKINGUR (ISL)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-5 on aggregate

At least some coefficient points for Andorra in UESC's farewell, but not
enough to catch Belarus (by 0.002 points, but Dinamo Minsk have at least
six more matches anyway).

NK CELJE (SLO) v FC Pyunik (ARM)* 4-1 (2-0), 4-2 on aggregate
(Nemanič 22', Bobičanec 42' (pen), Kučys 73', 85'; Cociuc 63' (pen);
Red Cards: James Santos (Pyu) 11', Kvesić (Cel) 50')

In a pretty wild match Pyunik's Brazilian winger James Santos saw his
marching orders for getting into an altercation with Juanjo Nieto, and
catching Celje's new Spanish right-back in the face in full view of the
referee. Klemen Nemanič gave the Slovenian champions the lead with a
pretty brilliant volley after the ball had broken somewhat luckily for
him:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461755/32463-Record_2024_08_29_20_37_15_883.mp4
and Luka Bobičanec made it two thanks to a penalty. But Mario Kvešić was
then also sent off for a high boot when trying to break up a counter-
attack, and ten against ten Pyunik scored the aggregate equaliser, also
from the spot. With the tie in balance Armandas Kučys got the decisive
goal with a precise shot from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461755/32512-Record_2024_08_29_21_47_33_488.mp4
and Celje's Lithuanian striker also added a late second on the break.

LARNE FC (NIR)* v Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB) 3-1 (2-1), 4-3 on aggregate
(Ryan 30' (pen), 43' (pen), 83'; Lopes 20';
Red Card: Gallagher (Lar) 59')

Bernardo Lopes volleyed in a cross by 39-year-old Spanish winger Nano
to give the Imps the lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461759/32614-Record_2024_08_30_01_08_18_749.mp4
but two penalties converted by Scotsman Andy Ryan turned the tie around,
one awarded by VAR for a handball, and one when Ibrahim Ayew, the
forgotten Ayew brother, brought down Chris Gallagher in the box.
Gallagher was then himself sent off with a second yellow, but seven
minutes from time Ryan completed his hat trick and scored what Larne
themselves call 'the 2.5 million pound goal' by collecting Benji Magee's
cross and volleying past Lincoln keeper Nauzet Santana:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461759/32617-Record_2024_08_30_01_10_27_643.mp4

A heavy loss in CLQ1 against RFS, a bye in ConfLQ2, a win on penalties
against Ballkani in ConfLQ3, and now barely squeaking past the
Gibraltarian champions in ConfLPO - that's hardly the most difficult
possible path to make it, but still - welcome to European football in
autumn, NIFL Premiership!

The only four leagues still missing: San Marino, Andorra, Malta, and
Montenegro.

Main Path

FC ASTANA (KAZ)* v SK Brann (NOR) 3-0 (0-0), 3-2 on aggregate
(Chinedu 60', 81', Karimov 90'+1)

A poor performance by Brann from the start, and Geoffrey Chinedu headed
in a cross by Croatian right-back Karlo Bartolec to halve Astana's
first-leg deficit. The Nigerian forward then also got his fifth goal in
these qualifiers by tapping into the empty net after Brann keeper
Mathias Dyngeland had punched a free-kick by Nazmi Gripshi against his
own defender Thore Pedersen:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461740/32435-Record_2024_08_29_20_04_51_515.mp4
and in stoppage time disaster struck once more as an absolute hospital
pass by left-back Joachim Soltvedt was intercepted by the substitute
Ramazan Karimov and easily slotted past Dyngeland:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461740/32338-Record_2024_08_29_17_51_22_170.mp4

Following Glimt's Champions League disappointment the next blow for
Norway and the Norwegian UEFA coefficient, and this one hurts.

Zirə FK (AZE) v AC OMONOIA (CYP)* 1-0 (0-0), 1-6 on aggregate
(Utzig 79')

The Azeri at least ended their pretty decent European campaign -
disregarding the first leg on Cyprus - on a positive note as late on
Brazilian striker Raphael Utzig headed in Məqsəd İsayev's cross for the
winner.

MFK Ružomberok (SLK) v FC NOAH (ARM)* 3-1 (2-0), 3-4 on aggregate
(Luterán 10', Hladík 45'+2, Boďa 71' (pen); Matheus Aiás 88';
Red Card: Pablo Santos (FCN) 70')

Whoa that was close. The Slovakian cup winners got back two of the three
goals they needed to make up the first-leg deficit already in the first
half as Oliver Luterán scored with a blistering shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461743/32367-Record_2024_08_29_18_53_54_997.mp4
and just before the break Czech striker Jan Hladík likewise volleyed in
a fierce drive:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461743/32393-Record_2024_08_29_19_19_25_609.mp4
Things appeared to go swimmingly well for Ružomberok when Noah's
Brazilian centre-back Pablo Santos in an ill-fated attempt to shepherd a
long ball towards his own keeper tore down Hladík:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461743/32428-Record_2024_08_29_20_00_53_763.mp4
thereby gifting Ružomberok a penalty, despatched by Martin Boďa, and
earning himself a second booking, but down to ten Noah still managed to
get the decisive goal - seven Slovakian defenders were no match for
three Armenian attackers, and Matheus Aiás, another of Noah's
Brazilians, headed in a cross by Virgile Pinson:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461743/32428-Record_2024_08_29_20_00_53_763.mp4

Armenia (Noah instead of Pyunik) and Kazakhstan (Astana instead of
Ordabasy) are the only countries which will be represented in the
group phase by a team other than their domestic champions.

I haven't checked thoroughly, but Noah might have one of the lowest club
coefficients of any European group phase participant ever.

Trabzonspor (TUR)* v FC ST. GALLEN 1879 (SUI) 1-1 aet (0-1, 1-1), 1-1 on
aggregate, St. Gallen win 5-4 on penalties
(Destan 52'; Schmidt 31')

In terms of UEFA coefficient this was probably the most important of the
three Turkish-Swiss ties this week. Congolese international Chadrac
Akolo found Isaac Schmidt in acres of space on the right side, and in
his last match for the Eastern Swiss before transferring to Leeds he
curled a shot past Trabzon keeper Uğurcan Çakır:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461744/32408-Record_2024_08_29_19_37_38_680.mp4
Trabzonspor got the equaliser through young striker Enis Destan who
headed in a corner kick by new signing from Rangers Borna Barišič, but
in the shoot-out it was another new signing, longtime Atlético centre-
back Stefan Savić, who missed the only spot kick. Former HSV defender
Stephan Ambrosius made headlines by converting St. Gallen's decisive
penalty with a no-look strike.

Paksi FC (HUN) v FK MLADÁ BOLESLAV (CZE)* 0-3 (0-0), 2-5 on aggregate
(Jawo 48', Králik 55', Pulkrab 90'+2)

Both sides had their chances in the first half, but the Czechs were the
ones making them count after the break. Gambian forward Lamin Jawo beat
Paks keeper Barnabás Simon with a ferocious drive:
Loading Image...
Slovakian centre-back Martin Kralík headed in a free-kick by Mladá
Boleslav's standout performer Tomáš Ladra, and in stoppage time the
substitutes Daniel Langhamer and Matěj Pulkrab toyed with the
demoralized Hungarian defence before the latter sent in a shot with the
outside of his foot:
Loading Image...

Five days before this match Mladá Boleslav had surprisingly replaced
their manager David Holoubek with former AIK coach Andreas Brännström,
and it didn't appear to hurt them as they reach their first group phase
since the 2007-08 UEFA Cup.

It's going to be another very very good season for the Czech Republic.

PAFOS FC (CYP) v FC CFR 1907 Cluj (ROM)* 3-0 (2-0), 3-1 on aggregate
(Jajá 28', Goldar 31', Tanković 49' (pen))

Cluj wilted in the Cypriot heat. Two Brazilians combined for Pafos's
opener, with Jajá stabbing in Jairo's cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461747/32404-Record_2024_08_29_19_30_30_91.mp4
Spanish centre-back David Goldar then headed in Pêpê's free-kick, and
right after the re-start Cluj's Slovenian centre-back Matija Boben
stupidly hacked down Jajá in the box, and Muamer Tanković converted the
penalty.

With APOEL, Omonoia, and Pafos Cyprus will have three teams in the
Conference League.

NK OLIMPIJA LJUBLJANA (SLO)* v HNK Rijeka (CRO) 5-0 (4-0), 6-1 on aggregate
(Florucz 2', Thalisson 13', 45', Kojić 35', Pedro Lucas 47')

Surprisingly one-sided. A long ball over the Croatian defence found Raul
Florucz, and Olimpija's Romanian-Austrian winger lobbed over Rijeka
keeper Zlomislić:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461746/32375-Record_2024_08_29_19_02_30_687.mp4
Two Brazilians then combined as Thalisson tapped in a cross by Pedro
Lucas, and yet another counter-attack gave Olimpija their third, with
19-year-old Dino Kojić at the end rounding Zlomislić:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461746/32409-Record_2024_08_29_19_35_58_302.mp4
Kojić also provided the brilliant back-heel assist for Thalisson's
second:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461746/32418-Record_2024_08_29_19_46_28_947.mp4
and right after the break Pedro Lucas headed in Jorge Silva's cross.
Following this some Croatian ultràs couldn't stomach the humiliation
anymore, threw flares everywhere and set something on fire in the
stands, leading to a half-hour interruption and the removal of all away
fans from the Stožice stadium.

Slovenia are the lowest-ranked league to bring two teams into the
group phase.

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH) v VITÓRIA SC (POR)* 0-4 (0-3), 0-7 on aggregate
(M. Silva 32' (pen), Santos 42', N. Oliveira 45'+4, G. Silva 71')

As one-sided as the first leg. Manu Silva converted a VAR penalty,
Nuno Santos chipped Ricardo Mangas's assist over Zrinjski's Austro-
Croatian keeper Marko Marić on the break, and Nélson Oliveira finished
off yet another counter-attack from an impossible angle:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461750/32475-Record_2024_08_29_20_52_41_146.mp4
In the second half Brazilian winger Gustavo Silva scored Vitória's
fourth with a rocket into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461750/32502-Record_2024_08_29_21_36_53_424.mp4

CERCLE BRUGGE KSV (BEL)* v TS Wisła Kraków (POL) 1-4 (0-2), 7-5 on aggregate
(Felipe Augusto 78'; Uryga 15', Kiss 18', Gogół 73', Zwoliński 90'+4)

Ha! Stuff like this really shouldn't happen against a 2nd-division side,
even after winning 6-1 away and resting a bunch of players.

Wisła took an early two-goal lead thanks to Alan Uryga heading in
Frederico Duarte's corner kick and Hungarian midfielder Tamás Kiss
beating Cercle's Brazilian keeper Warleson on the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461751/32445-Record_2024_08_29_20_19_30_790.mp4
Things got really interesting after Patryk Gogół broke through and beat
Warleson one-on-one:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461751/32506-Record_2024_08_29_21_42_03_328.mp4
as at this point the Polish cup winners were only two goals away from
completing the most improbable comeback of all time. A bit of a shame
therefore about Felipe Augusto's goal on the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461751/32511-Record_2024_08_29_21_42_50_194.mp4
because in stoppage time Łukasz Zwoliński scored with a super-cheeky
back-heel:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461751/32520-Record_2024_08_29_21_56_42_472.mp4
and wouldn't that have made for a frantic and exciting finish.

PANATHINAIKOS FC (GRE) v Racing Club de Lens (FRA)* 2-0 (0-0), 3-2 on
aggregate
(Pellistri 62', Tetê 85')

After a quarter of an hour Lens were awarded a penalty when Filip
Mladenović brought down David Costa, but Florian Sotoca saw his spot
kick saved by Panathinaikos's Polish keeper Bartłomiej Drągowski. This
miss proved to be very costly in the end as in the second half Fotis
Ioannidis and Facundo Pellistri played a somewhat inadvertent one-two at
the end of which Pana's new Uruguayan signing curled a shot past Lens
keeper Brice Samba:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461752/32521-Record_2024_08_29_21_57_09_799.mp4
and five minutes from time the Greeks punished Lens again on the break,
with former Shakhtar winger Tetê burying Daniel Mancini's feed:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461752/32522-Record_2024_08_29_21_57_50_691.mp4

KF Drita (KOS) v LEGIA WARSZAWA (POL) 0-1 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate
(Pekhart 90'+1; Red Card: Broja (Dri) 77')

Drita fought valiantly and had a couple of chances while Legia were
pretty dire, but Rron Broja's two bookings didn't help, and in the end
the Poles didn't even leave coefficient crumbs on the table as in
stoppage time veteran striker Tomáš Pekhart collected a cross by Legia's
Albanian midfielder Jurgen Çelhaka and calmly rolled it past Drita
keeper Maloku:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461753/32529-Record_2024_08_29_22_08_07_68.mp4

The last Kosovar team has been eliminated, they're the highest-ranked
league to not bring a team to a group stage. It's been a subpar season
for Kosovo, they will most likely be overtaken by the likes of Ireland
and Armenia.

Kilmarnock FC (SCO) v FC KØBENHAVN (DEN)* 1-1 (1-0), 1-3 on aggregate
(Watkins 16'; Mayo 68' (og))

Welshman Marley Watkins gave Killie some hope by volleying home
following a goalmouth scramble after Stuart Findlay's initial header had
come off the post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461754/32527-Record_2024_08_29_22_05_35_312.mp4
but those hopes were dashed when Lewis Mayo deflected Moi Elyounoussi's
cross into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461754/32523-Record_2024_08_29_21_59_40_682.mp4

NK Maribor (SLO) v DJURGÅRDENS IF (SWE)* 0-1 (0-1), 0-2 on aggregate
(Hümmet 4'; Red Card: Vidmar (Mar) 59')

Djurgården doubled the aggregate lead already early on when Gustav
Wikheim broke through on the right wing and centred for Deniz Hümmet to
tap in: Loading Image...
and Maribor never managed to recover, especially after their young
centre-back Lan Vidmar was sent off with a second booking.

1. FC HEIDENHEIM 1846 (GER)* v BK Häcken (SWE) 3-2 (1-0), 5-3 on aggregate
(Pieringer 30', Wanner 84', Honsak 90'+2; Inoussa 59', Agbonifo 79')

Marvin Pieringer rifled in Sirlord Conteh's assist to give Heidenheim
the lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461757/32487-Record_2024_08_29_21_01_59_572.mp4
but Zeidane Inoussa slotted in Mikkel Rygaard's cut-back cross for the
equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461757/32514-Record_2024_08_29_21_50_53_212.mp4
and for a moment it appeared as if Sweden would have a realistic chance
of bringing all four teams into the group phase as 18-year-old Jeremy
Agbonifo curled a great shot past Heidenheim keeper Kevin Müller:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461757/32537-Record_2024_08_29_22_09_39_567.mp4
But five minutes later Bayern loanee Paul Wanner (we are still trying to
goad him into declaring for the Austrian NT, but it's looking more
unlikely by the day) created some space for himself before rifling into
the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461757/32542-Record_2024_08_29_22_14_37_854.mp4
and in stoppage time Mathias Honsak, who has actually already been
called up for Austria (but no caps yet), fired into the same corner on
the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461757/32548-Record_2024_08_29_22_22_18_197.mp4

Servette FC (SUI) v CHELSEA FC (ENG)* 2-1 (1-1), 2-3 on aggregate
(Guillemenot 32', Crivelli 72'; Nkunku 14' (pen))

I'm not certain Chelsea got the memo about how it's in their own
interest to do well in this competition because even though they took
the lead from the spot following a poor challenge by Servette's Japanese
right-back Keigo Tsunemoto on Mykhailo Mudryk they rode their luck in
the end. Dereck Kutesa found Jérémy Guillemenot with a nice through ball
for the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461758/32517-Record_2024_08_29_21_55_35_741.mp4
and the tie came fully alive twenty minutes from time when former
Başakşehir forward Enzo Crivelli headed in Miroslav Stevanović's cross.
Cole Palmer could have calmed Chelsea's nerves but his shot came off the
crossbar, and so it was panic stations until the last second when
Timothé Cognat's curler from distance whistled past the far post.

Puskás Akadémia FC (HUN) v ACF FIORENTINA (ITA)* 1-1 aet (0-0, 1-1), 4-4
on aggregate, Fiorentina win 5-4 on penalties
(Nagy 90'+7 (pen); Kean 59'; Red Cards: Ranieri (Fio) 90'+4,
Comuzzo (Fio) 97', Martínez Quarta (Fio, on the bench) 98')

Moise Kean gave Fiorentina the expected lead with a nice solo effort:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461709/32543-Record_2024_08_29_22_17_52_631.mp4
but this was far from easy cruising for the Italians, and an excellent
David de Gea was called into action numerous times, most notably when he
pushed Jakub Plšek's header from point-blank range against the crossbar.
Still, in stoppage time Luca Ranieri practically tore Lamin Colley's
jersey off, earning himself a second yellow and the Hungarians a
penalty, despatched by Zsolt Nagy. In extra time Fiorentina were even
reduced to nine since Pietro Comuzzo likewise was sent off with a second
yellow for a shirt pull, but if that was all a clever ploy to avoid
losing a third Conference League in a row it didn't work as in the
shoot-out all penalties were converted except the one saved by De Gea
against Roland Szolnoki, one of the few Hungarians in the Puskás
'Academy' squad.

REAL BETIS BALOMPIÉ (ESP)* v FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih (UKR) 3-0 (3-0), 5-0
on aggregate
(Ruibal 40', Ezzalzouli 41', 43')

As easy a win as in the first leg, this time thanks to three goals in
three minutes - Aitor Ruibal turned in Abde Ezzalzouli's centre:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461761/32504-Record_2024_08_29_21_40_44_869.mp4
and Ezzalzouli got the next two himself, one with an angled shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461761/32505-Record_2024_08_29_21_42_16_434.mp4
and one by burying the rebound into the empty net after Kryvbas keeper
Klishchuk had left his net to save against Rodri:

Conference League 2nd Qualifying Round, 2nd leg
* = seeded team
Teams in CAPITALS (except DAC and HB) go to ConfLQ3 (Champions and Main
Path)
So no European group phase for Malta, but in an old piece of news that I
had missed until now but find interesting: from this season onwards the
Maltese Premier League has become the first ever UEFA league - to my
knowledge - to switch to an Apertura/Clausura system like they use in
South America or Mexico.

I have no idea what prompted that change, and I'm curious whether it'll
bring noticeable changes to what's of course still a minnow's league.
I guess one appeal to lure investors could be that with a system like
that (where both Apertura and Clausura champions automatically qualify
for Europe) the way into a European competition could be shorter than
anywhere else (except maybe Liechtenstein) since you essentially only
have to win half a season.

European debuts for Šiauliai, Isloch, Caernarfon, Kalev, Malisheva,
Bravo, Tikveš, Mornar, and Strassen.
Conference League 1st Qualifying Round
* = seeded team

July 10

FK Velež Mostar (BIH) v Inter Club d'Escaldes (AND)* 1-1 (0-1)
(Lohan 65'; Joanet 34')

Way closer than expected - Equatorial Guinea international Joanet gave
Inter a fully deserved lead:
Loading Image...
but Brazilian youngster Elzio Lohan Alves Lucio at least rifled in the
equaliser for the Herzegovinians:
Loading Image...
Late on the Andorrans also hit the post and clamoured for a probably
justified handball penalty, but VAR is only used in the Champions League
qualifiers.

FK Auda (LAT) v B36 (FAR)* 2-0 (1-0)
(Taiwo 12', Traore 85')

Auda's first ever win in Europe thanks to goals by Nigerian former
Dunajská Streda and SønderjyskE striker Abulrahman Taiwo, and young
Ivorian Aboul Kader Traore.

July 11

FA Šiauliai (LTU) v FCI Levadia (EST)* 0-2 (0-2)
(Musaba 7', Felipe Felicio 23')

Unsuccessful European debut for Šiauliai as former Dutch U-18
international Richie Musaba tapped in a loose ball to give the Estonians
an early lead, and young Brazilian in the East Felipe Felicio, a loanee
from Atlético Mineiro, headed in Levadia's second.

KF Malisheva (KOS) v FK Budućnost Podgorica (MNE)* 1-0 (0-0)
(Brruti 67')

The Kosovars' European debut was more auspicious, as U21 international
Etnik Brruti got them the winner with an excellent shot from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453312/25083-Record_2024_07_11_19_15_44_959.mp4

FC Aktobe (KAZ) v FK Sarajevo (BIH)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Kyeremeh 90')

One of the more high-profile matches in this round, between two regulars
at these early stages of the competition. Aktobe dominated for large
stretches, but the Bosnians grabbed the win thanks to a wonder strike by
Ghanaian forward Francis Kyeremeh:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453313/25107-Record%20(2).mp4

FK Liepāja (LAT)* v Víkingur (FAR) 1-1 (0-1)
(Simić 55'; Kallsberg 21')

Liepāja are dead last more than halfway through the Latvian season while
it's Víkingur (pronounced voo-itch-in-koor), and not Klaksvík, who are
currently leading the Faroese Premier League, so this draw came as a bit
of a surprise. A long ball by Ari Olsen allowed youngster Poul Kallsberg
to lob over Liepāja keeper Kurakins and give the team from Gøta the
lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453314/25108-Record%20(3).mp4
but veteran Montenegrin centre-back Marko Simić, who has two Champions
League group stages with BATE Borisov back in 2011 and 2012 under his
belt, and at age 37 has left his home country for one more adventure in
the Baltics, headed in the equaliser.

FC Bruno's Magpies (GIB) v Derry City FC (IRL)* 2-0 (0-0)
(Taylor 49', Zúñiga 82')

The first European match played in Gibraltar's freshly refurbished
Europa Point Stadium (also a cricket and rugby venue) instead of the
usual Victoria Stadium which is currently being renovated, and it was a
memorable one for both sides. Welsh centre-back Ash Taylor, freshly
arrived on the Rock from Bradford City in League Two, headed in a
looping corner kick, and the Magpies' Mexican captain Francisco Zúñiga
did likewise from Carlos García's free-kick:
Loading Image...

A day to celebrate at Bruno's Bar & Restaurant! Of their five European
matches so far, all against Irish or Northern Irish opposition, the
Magpies have now won two and drawn one.

NK Bravo (SLO) v Connah's Quay Nomads FC (WAL)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Maher 83')

Another surprise. Ben Maher volleyed in the Nomads' winner against the
Slovenian debutants after Callum Bratley's header had come off the
crossbar: Loading Image...

FC Noah (ARM) v KF Shkëndija (MKD)* 2-0 (0-0)
(Gregório 81', Miljković 90')

Two late headers, one by Portuguese journeyman striker Gonçalo Gregório,
freshly arrived in Yerevan from Dinamo Bucharest, and one by Serbian
centre-back Aleksandar Miljković, gave the Armenians a somewhat
surprisingly clear win.

JK Tallinna Kalev (EST) v FC Urartu (ARM)* 1-2 (1-1)
(Teeväli 11'; Movsesyan 28', 77')

Under-21 international Tristan Teeväli tapped in a free-kick for the
Estonians in their European debut, but Edgar Movsesyan scored the
equaliser in unnecessarily complicated fashion:
Loading Image...
and late on got the winner after a deflected shot had fallen kindly to
him: Loading Image...

Atlètic Club d'Escaldes (AND) v F91 Diddeleng (LUX)* 0-1 (0-1)
(Bojić 17')

The Andorrans were actually the dominant team here, but the only goal
came courtesy of Düdelingen's Croatian midfielder Filip Bojić whose
long free-kick eluded everyone before bouncing into the far corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453320/25111-Record%20(2).mp4

Floriana FC (MLT) v SP Tre Penne (SMR)* 3-1 (0-0)
(Nwoko 55', Vella 57', Thiaguinho Santos 63'; Guidi 50')

For a short moment the Sammarinese could dream of the upset, but those
hopes were quickly dashed by three goals in rapid succession, all from
crosses. Brazilian in the Mediterranean Thiaguinho Santos's volley was
the nicest of them:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452203/25120-Record_2024_07_11_22_22_31_1.mp4

FC Torpedo Kutaisi (GEO) v KF Tirana (ALB)* 1-1 (1-0)
(Mici 20' (og); Haxhiu 87')

Own Goal, the top scorer of Euro 2024, finally made an appearance in
these qualifiers as well, as Tirana's Kosovar leftback Gledi Mici
turned Giorgi Mchedlishvili's cross into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453322/25115-Record%20(6).mp4
Rimal Haxhiu scored a late equaliser with a wicked shot that completely
wrong-footed Torpedo's Serbian keeper Kljajić:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453322/25112-Record%20(4).mp4

FC UNA Strassen (LUX) v KuPS (FIN)* 0-0 (0-0)
(Red Card: Cissé (Kuo) 75')

Decent result for Strassen, who got their European debut only because
two clubs ahead of them in last season's Luxembourg league (Swift Hesper
and Jeunesse Esch) were denied a UEFA licence.

VPS (FIN) v FK Žalgiris (LTU)* 1-2 (0-1)
(Ahiabu 59'; Fofana 25', Kendysh 90'+4; Red Card: Pitkänen (VPS) 72')

And another bad result for Finnish club football. Ivorian winger Adama
Fofana, who in his career has also spent some time in the Veikkausliiga,
gave the Lithuanians the lead with a drive from distance:
Loading Image...
Vaasa's Ghanaian midfielder Prosper Ahiabu got the equaliser after a
corner kick, but after Mikko Pitkänen had got sent off with a second
yellow for a handball that was adjudged to have been deliberate, against
ten men Belarusian defender Yury Kendysh volleyed in from short range
for Žalgiris's winner:
Loading Image...

Caernarfon Town FC (WAL) v Crusaders FC (NIR)* 2-0 (2-0)
(Owen 4', Clarke 37')

Just four minutes into their European debut Caernarfon rightback Morgan
Rhys Wyn Owen (a Welsh name if I've ever heard one) unleashed a shot
from distance that left the Crusaders' veteran goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey
with egg on his face:
Loading Image...
Young striker Zack Clarke, who had previously plied his trade in the
National League North (6th English tier), made it two on the break.

FC Torpedo-BelAZ (BLR) v FC Milsami Orhei (MDA)* 2-4 (1-2)
(Pobudey 33', Sharkovskiy 89'; Camara 20', Spătaru 30', 50',
Premudrov 80' (og))

As has become usual for Belarusian clubs, this tie was also played in
Hungary, this time in Szombathely near the Austrian border. Milsami's
Malian winger Mamadou Camara gave the Moldovans the lead with a shot
from distance that Evgeniy Abramovich should have dealt better with than
just slap it into his own net, but Torpedo's goalkeeper then had no
chance against Danu Spătaru's effort that curled perfectly into the far
corner: Loading Image...
The Belarusians immediately hit back through a long-distance drive of
their own, but in the second half Spătaru got his second on the break,
and Torpedo captain Kirill Premudrov awkwardly lobbed a long ball over
his own keeper for Milsami's fourth. Young substitute Timofey
Sharkovskiy tapped in a late consolation.

Bala Town FC (WAL) v Paide Linnameeskond (EST)* 1-2 (0-0)
(Ukek 90'+5 (pen); Ceesay 64', Medić 90'+2)

Paide, still functioning as a gateway for young Gambian players into
Europe, got the lead thanks to one of them, Abdoulie Ceesay, converting
a through ball. In stoppage time a harmless-looking shot by Serbian
midfielder Predrag Medić slipped through the hands of Bala's young
English keeper Joel Torrance:
Loading Image...
but the Welsh at least still got one back thanks to a generous last-
minute penalty.

FK Partizani (ALB)* v Marsaxlokk FC (MLT) 1-1 (1-1)
(Murataj 2'; Yuri 15')

Valentino Murataj ran onto a through ball to give the Albanian
favourites the early lead:
Loading Image...
but in their European return after sixteen years humbly named Brazilian
in the Mediterranean Yuri de Jesus Messias soon volleyed in Marsaxlokk's
equaliser: Loading Image...

GFK Tikveš (MKD) v Breiðablik (ISL)* 3-2 (0-2)
(Stojkovski 74', Stojanov 80', Léo Guerra 83'; V.K. Einarsson 13',
Kristinsson 31')

Viktor Karl Einarsson with a tap-in and Kristófer Kristinsson with a
shot from a very tight angle:
Loading Image...
gave the Icelanders a seemingly unassailable lead, but three late goals
in quick succession turned the tie on its head - Kristijan Stojkoski
chipped over Breiðablik keeper Anton Einarsson, Martin Stojanov
converted a free-kick:
Loading Image...
and Amazonas FC loanee Léo Guerra got the third on the break:
Loading Image...
to give the North Macedonian debutants are rather surprising come-from-
behind victory.

SP La Fiorita (SMR)* v FC Isloch Minsk Raion (BLR) 0-1 (0-1)
(Butsko 34')

Sammarinese opponents are usually the last remaining true minnows, but
the Belarusian debutants still needed a gift from La Fiorita's veteran
keeper Gianluca Vivan to get the win:
Loading Image...

Shelbourne FC (IRL) v St Joseph's FC (GIB)* 2-1 (1-1)
(Coyle 1', Jarvis 58' (pen); Javi Paul 40')

The other Irish-Gibraltarian tie on this matchday almost went pear-
shaped, too, as despite Mark Coyle's first-minute opener St Joseph
centre-back Javi Paul chested in a corner kick for the surprising
equaliser. Shelbourne at least got the winner from the spot, after
veteran Spanish winger Álvaro Rey, whose journeyman career has taken him
to Greece, Bolivia, Poland, and the MLS, had scythed down Sean Boyd in
the box.

FK Mornar Bar (MNE) v FC Dinamo Tbilisi (GEO)* 2-1 (2-0)
(Đurišić 20', Vušurović 23'; Ugrekhelidze 90'+4;
Red Card: Seratlić (Mor) 84')

Montenegrin debutants against former European trophy winners, but Mornar
took a shock lead thanks to Marko Đurišić's great long-range free-kick
(a certain Cristiano Ronaldo might take notes):
Loading Image...
and just minutes later Milan Vušurović punished a cock-up in the
Georgian defence to score the second. Deep in stoppage time Nikoloz
Ugrekhelidze at least headed in a corner kick to markedly increase
Dinamo's chances in the return leg.

KF Valur (ISL) v KF Vllaznia (ALB)* 2-2 (1-1)
(Tryggvason 12', Heimisson 90'+9; Krymi 23', Dodaj 85';
Red Cards: Deliu (Vll) 82', Jukaj (Vll, on the bench) 90'+9)

It's not been the best of matchdays for Icelandic teams. Guðmundur
Tryggvason gave Valur the early lead by slotting in a cross, but Ardit
Krymi headed in a free-kick for the equaliser, and even though they were
reduced to ten Kevin Dodaj gave the team from Shkodër the lead with a
shot from distance that went straight through Valur keeper Frederik
Schram:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453332/25182-Record%20(2).mp4
A corner kick deep deep in stoppage time at least got the Icelanders a
somewhat lucky equaliser.

UMF Stjarnan (ISL) v Linfield FC (NIR)* 2-0 (1-0)
(Atlason 22', 60')

Domestically Stjarnan are currently the worst-placed among Iceland's
teams in Europe, but against hapless Northern Irish opposition they were
the most successful one. Emil Atlason scored both goals from free-kicks,
one converted directly:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453333/25176-Record%20(7).mp4
and one at the second attempt:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/453333/25179-Record%20(9).mp4
In between those two goals, Linfield missed a penalty when Chris
Shields's effort came back off the crossbar.

European debuts for Šiauliai, Isloch, Caernarfon, Kalev, Malisheva,
Bravo, Tikveš, Mornar, and Strassen.
Conference League 1st Qualifying Round, 2nd leg
Teams in CAPITALS (except B36 and VPS) through to ConfLQ2 (Main Path)
* = seeded team

July 17

B36 (FAR)* v FK AUDA (LAT) 0-1 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate
(Talla 62')

Senegalese winger Mor Talla punished a gaffe by B36 keeper Eyðsteinsson:
Loading Image...
for the sole goal.

Crusaders FC (NIR)* v CAERNARFON TOWN FC (WAL) 3-1 aet (0-1, 3-1), 3-3
on aggregate, Caernarfon win 8-7 on penalties
(Kennedy 47', Larmour 49', Lowry 72'; Mendes 24')

Crusaders overcame a three-goal aggregate deficit thanks to two goals
in rapid succession from set-pieces, and one from a quickly executed
throw-in, but they then weren't able to press their advantage in the
remaining fifty minutes. In the shootout the first fourteen penalties
were all converted (first-leg hero Morgan Rhys Wyn Owen's effort was
actually saved, but he was allowed to retake it as Crusaders keeper
Tuffey was adjudged to have left his line - but no VAR here to check),
then Caernarfon's Northern Irish keeper McMullan saved two Crusaders
spot kicks in a row. Northern Irish club football really is a bit
tragic.

Quite a lot of Caernarfon away fans in attendance. Scenes!

July 18

FC URARTU (ARM)* v JK Tallinna Kalev (EST) 2-0 (1-0), 4-1 on aggregate
(Mirzoyan 12', 49')

Two simple balls over the top allowed Mikayel Mirzoyan to score a brace.

KUPS (FIN)* v FC UNA Strassen (LUX) 5-0 (2-0), 5-0 on aggregate
(Ruoppi 17', 20', Vidjeskog 48', Diawara 76', Heinonen 90'+1)

Things started to go downhill fast for Strassen as their keeper Koray
Özcan failed to scoop up a long ball, and baby-faced 18-year-old Finnish
youth international Otto Ruoppi tapped into the empty net. Ruoppi soon
after headed in his second, and after the break Axel Vidjeskog, Ousmane
Diawara (a loanee from Austrian Bundesliga side Altach) and Arttu
Heinonen finished off a no-nonsense performance for Kuopio after the
lacklustre first leg away in Luxembourg.

INTER CLUB D'ESCALDES (AND)* v FK Velež Mostar (BIH) 5-1 (2-0), 6-2 on
aggregate
(Lopez 44', 45'+2, Berlanga 57', 84', Andreu 90'+2; Oreč 53')

Continuing Andorra's amazing European moment. When in the 39th minute
Nermin Haskić sent a penalty against the right post it might have
appeared to the Herzegovinians to have been just a minor hiccup, but
just a couple of minutes later Inter Escaldes were suddenly two up -
Montpellier-trained French striker Guillaume Lopez beat Velež's woeful
offside trap to find himself completely alone in front of their Bosnian-
Austrian keeper Hadžikić, and Lopez then was again completely forgotten
by the Herzegovinian defence for his second:
Loading Image...
Velež halved the deficit soon after the re-start when the Andorrans
likewise let a harmless-looking cross go through their box allowing Ante
Oreč to tap in, but again just four minutes later Domi Berlanga slotted
home another low cross in acres of space:
Loading Image...
Late on Berlanga punished yet another defensive mishap by Adin Bajrić
who failed to clear an easy high ball, and in stoppage time man of the
match Berlanga toyed with three demoralised Velež defenders and set up
37-year-old Spanish striker Sascha Andreu for the fifth.

The highest European win for an Andorran team - technically on a par
with FC Santa Coloma v Mons Calpe (GIB) 4-0 in the 1st Conference League
qualification round three years ago, but for obvious reasons I'd rate
this one much higher.

I also have to admit that Velež's new (and perhaps soon former, the club
is clearly in turmoil now) Austrian coach Damir Čanadi has already been
a pretty dismal failure during his stints with Rapid Wien and Nürnberg.

FC MILSAMI ORHEI (MDA)* v FC Torpedo-BelAZ (BLR) 0-0 (0-0), 4-2 on aggregate

The home team had more of the match, but the scoreless draw was enough.

FCI LEVADIA (EST)* v FA Šiauliai (LTU) 0-0 (0-0), 2-0 on aggregate

Same here.

St Joseph's FC (GIB)* v SHELBOURNE FC (IRL) 1-1 (1-1), 2-3 on aggregate
(Walker 25'; Bone 34'; Red Cards: Gannon (She) 90'+2,
Paz (StJ, on the bench) 90'+2)

A very laboured qualification for the team currently leading the League
of Ireland. 36-year-old Gibraltar NT record caps holder and joint top
goalscorer Liam Walker levelled the overall score with a pretty great
volley from 20 metres:
Loading Image...
but nine minutes later Shelbourne's English centre-back Sam Bone tapped
in from half a metre out after St Joseph's keeper Alex Navas had made a
mess out of Ali Coote's free-kick:
Loading Image...
Damien Duff's side rode their luck a couple of times in the second half,
and during 13 minutes stoppage time Shelbourne right-back Sean Gannon
also got into a scuffle with the Gibraltarian bench and was sent off
along with St. Joseph's Argentinian reserve keeper Gonzalo Paz.

FK ŽALGIRIS (LTU)* v VPS (FIN) 1-0 (1-0), 3-1 on aggregate
(Fofana 45'+4)

As in the first leg Ivorian winger Adama Fofana got on the scoresheet
for the Lithuanians, this time with a thumping header.

PAIDE LINNAMEESKOND (EST)* v Bala Town FC (WAL) 1-1 aet (0-1, 0-1), 3-2
on aggregate
(Hõim 120'; Peate 12'; Red Card: Downes (Bal) 110')

Bala captain Nathan Peate headed in a corner kick for the aggregate
equaliser, but just as everyone prepared for a shootout Paide's 19-year-
old substitute Oskar Hõim scored with a quite brilliant strike to send
the Estonians through to next round:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/457828/25517-Record_2024_07_19_06_34_03_234.mp4

F91 DIDDELENG (LUX)* v Atlètic Club d'Escaldes (AND) 2-0 (0-0), 3-0 on
aggregate
(Hadji 60' (pen), 79')

Well it would have been a bit much if all the Andorran teams had won.
Mustapha Hadji's son Samir scored a brace from the spot and a tap-in
after the Atlètic defence had lost the ball in their own box.

Marsaxlokk FC (MLT) v FK PARTIZANI (ALB)* 1-2 (0-0), 2-3 on aggregate
(Yuri 46'; Cara 48', Keko 90'+3)

The two sides exchanged goals just after the break - Yuri de Jesus
Messias scored with a shot from distance and Tedi Cara tapped in a cross
from short range, but with the tie evenly poised deep in stoppage time
the Maltese fell foul of the offside rule in its current interpretation
and Albers Keko tapped into the empty net:

FC Dinamo Tbilisi (GEO)* v FK MORNAR BAR (MNE) 1-1 (1-0), 2-3 on aggregate
(Salia 33'; Zorić 57'; Red Card: Ugrekhelidze (Din) 20')

This has not been a good matchday for Austrian, or more specifically
former Rapid Wien coaches - like Damir Čanadi in Mostar Ferdinand
Feldhofer had just taken over the job in the Georgian capital. Dinamo
shot themselves in the foot early on when Nikoloz Ugrekhelidze lost the
ball as last man and was forced to pull down Mornar's French-Gabonese
forward Chris-Marlon Ondong-Mba, but even down to ten they managed to
level the aggregate score through 16-year-old Georgian attacking hope
Vakhtang Salia who tunnelled Mornar keeper Popović:
Loading Image...
Still, former AEK forward Darko Zorić scored the somewhat lucky decisive
goal with a deflected shot from distance.

FC Isloch Minsk Raion (BLR) v SP LA FIORITA (SMR)* 0-1 aet (0-0, 0-1),
1-1 on aggregate, La Fiorita win 4-2 on penalties
(Semprini 87')

We knew Belarusian football was deep in the doldrums, what with the
sanctions, playing all their European home matches behind closed
doors in small Hungarian cities, and dropping to second-from-last in the
UEFA ranking, but this was a new low point. Jacopo Semprini bungled a
cross provided by fellow substitute Alex Toccaceli over the line from
close range: Loading Image...
and in the shootout La Fiorita's veteran goalkeeper Gianluca Vivan saved
efforts by Maksim Kovel and Dmitry Sibilev.

Only the third time ever that a Sammarinese team survives a round in
Europe. Tre Fiori previously managed to do it twice, against Bala Town
in 2018 and against Fola Esch in 2022.

Connah's Quay Nomads FC (WAL)* v NK BRAVO (SLO) 0-2 aet (0-0, 0-1), 1-2
on aggregate
(Jakšić 88', Poplatnik 115')

The Nomads fought valiantly, but twice they missed out by only a couple
of minutes. Nemanja Jakšić fired in a cross from close range to send the
tie to extra time:
Loading Image...
and former Livingston striker Matej Poplatnik headed in from a free-kick
to avoid penalties:
Loading Image...

KF Tirana (ALB)* v FC TORPEDO KUTAISI (GEO) 0-1 (0-1), 1-2 on aggregate
(Johnsen 2')

US-born former Norway international Bjørn Johnsen, who has now added
Georgia to the quite impressive list of countries he's played in
(Spain, Portugal, South Korea, Canada, Netherlands, Scotland,
Bulgaria...) got the decisive goal already early on when he volleyed in
Giorgi Mchedlishvili's cross:
Loading Image...

At least one Georgian team finishing the job properly.

VÍKINGUR (FAR) v FK Liepāja (LAT)* 2-0 (2-0), 3-1 on aggregate
(Kallsberg 30', Justinussen 43')

Liepāja keeper Kurakins spilled a shot by Víkingur's indefatigable
mainstay Sølvi Vatnhamar (he's close to 400 matches for them now) and
Poul Kallsberg was on hand to tap the ball into the empty net:
Loading Image...
Finnur Justinussen made it two with a great shot into the far top corner
after a long ball had wrong-footed the Latvian defence:
Loading Image...

KF Shkëndija (MKD)* v FC NOAH (ARM) 1-2 (0-1), 1-4 on aggregate
(Cake 53'; Miljković 20', Pinson 90'+1)

Noah's Serbian centre-back Aleksandar Miljković pushed a close-range
header through the legs of Shkëndija keeper Amzai:
Loading Image...
The North Macedonians also scored thanks to a header by their Albanian
centre-back Klisman Cake (tsah-keh, not dessert), but in stoppage time
French journeyman winger Virgile Pinson scored on the break to give the
Armenians extra coefficient points.

Armenia are the lowest-ranked nation to still have all four of their
European entries alive.

KF Vllaznia (ALB)* v KF VALUR (ISL) 0-4 (0-3), 2-6 on aggregate
(K.F. Sigurðsson 13', Tryggvason 16', Pedersen 36', Haraldsson 68')

Considering the close first leg, a surprisingly heavy defeat for
Vllaznia at home in Shkodra. Kristinn Freyr Sigurðsson latched onto a
loose ball and Guðmundur Andri Tryggvason scored with a turn-and-shot
for an early brace, and Danish striker Patrick Pedersen beat his marker
to a long ball and poked it past Vllaznia keeper Qarri. After the break
Tryggvi Hrafn Haraldsson, brother of Lille and former FC København
winger Hákon Arnar Haraldsson likewise ran onto a long ball and lobbed
over Qarri: Loading Image...

I had missed that Gylfi Sigurðsson was playing again back home.

SP Tre Penne (SMR)* v FLORIANA FC (MLT) 1-1 (0-0), 2-4 on aggregate
(Boccioletti 60'; Grech 90'+5)

So for quite a while the other Sammarinese team could hope for the huge
upset as well, but with Tre Penne chasing the goal that would send the
tie to extra time the Maltese finally finished them off on the break.

Derry City FC (IRL)* v FC BRUNO'S MAGPIES (GIB) 2-1 aet (1-0, 2-0), 2-3
on aggregate
(Connelly 38', Hoban 57'; De Haro 111'; Red Card: O'Reilly (Der) 45')

The upset instead happened far to the northwest of San Marino. Mark
Connelly headed in a corner kick, and so did Patrick Hoban after the
break despite Derry having been reduced to ten due to Adam O'Reilly's
second booking for a dive in the box. In extra time, out of nowhere
Sevilla-trained winger Juanje Argüez unleashed an amazing shot that came
crashing back off the crossbar, and Gibraltarian youngster Evan De Haro
buried the rebound into the gaping net:
Loading Image...

Northern Irish club football is a bit tragic even if they play in the
league of another country. Ireland is the highest-ranked country to
have already lost a team.

Linfield FC (NIR)* v UMF STJARNAN (ISL) 3-2 (1-0), 3-4 on aggregate
(Kristjánsson 7' (og), Orr 70', Fitzpatrick 76'; Atlason 57',
Halldorsson 88'; Red Card: Shields (Lin) 90'+3)

Stjarnan captain Guðmundur Kristjánsson headed Joel Cooper's cross into
his own net to give Linfield the early lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/457840/25508-Record_2024_07_19_06_18_52_171.mp4
but absolutely woeful defending of a corner kick allowed Emil Atlason to
nod in the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/457840/25509-Record_2024_07_19_06_19_44_465.mp4
Two goals in quick succession for the Northern Irish then levelled the
tie on aggregate - Matthew Orr headed in another cross and Matthew
Fitzpatrick fired in a volley from outside the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/457840/25511-Record_2024_07_19_06_21_47_137.mp4
but with mere minutes left until extra time Stjarnan youngster Haukur
Örn Brink broke into the box and sent in a cross that was emphatically
fired in by Hilmar Árni Halldórsson:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/457840/25510-Record_2024_07_19_06_21_07_881.mp4
In injury time Linfield captain Chris Shields then saw a straight red
for scything down Brink to break up a Stjarnan counter-attack.

Have I mentioned that Northern Irish club football is a bit tragic?

FK BUDUĆNOST PODGORICA (MNE)* v KF Malisheva (KOS) 3-0 (1-0), 3-1 on
aggregate
(Ivanović 32', Grivić 56', Perišić 88')

Easy win for Budućnost, who took the lead when their captain, former
Partizan Belgrade forward Petar Grbić, powered down the left wing and
provided the cross that Igor Ivanović only had to tap in from an inch
out: Loading Image...
Dragan Grivić's mishit cross then fell into the Kosovar net like a
shooting-star: Loading Image...
and late on the young substitute Vladimir Perišić made it three on the
break.

Montenegro are the lowest-ranked nation to still have three European
entries alive (in their case, that's all they were allowed to send).

FK SARAJEVO (BIH)* v FC Aktobe (KAZ) 2-3 aet (0-1, 1-2), 3-3 on
aggregate, Sarajevo win 4-3 on penalties
(Guliashvili 57', Oliveira 96'; Umayev 41', Tanzharikov 75', Jean 93';
Red Card: Đuričković (Sar) 105'+1)

By far the game with the highest attendance on this matchday. Aktobe's
Chechnya-born striker Idris Umayev fired in Amadou Doumbouya's cross to
level the aggregate score, but Sarajevo's young Georgian winger Giorgi
Guliashvili equalised with a great curler from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/457842/25513-Record_2024_07_19_06_29_19_140.mp4
Adilkhan Tanzharikov's tap-in after a corner kick sent the tie to extra
time where Aktobe even took the lead thanks to a nice solo effort by
Haiti international Jayro Jean, who had taken the circuitous way to
Kazakhstan via Bolivia. Still, an awkward save by Aktobe's veteran
keeper Shatskiy, who spilled a header, allowed Sarajevo's Brazilian
striker Renan Oliveira to once more get the aggregate equaliser, and
despite a 2nd yellow for their Montenegrin captain Miomir Đuričković
the Bosnians held on to the result until penalties. In the shootout both
sides missed their first penalty, then Maksim Samorodov saw his spot
kick saved by Sarajevo keeper Rockov.

BREIÐABLIK (ISL)* v GFK Tikveš (MKD) 3-1 (1-1), 5-4 on aggregate
(Steindórsson 44', Gunnlaugsson 53', Mojsov 85' (og); Spahiu 9')

After a mix-up between Breiðablik keeper Anton Ari Einarsson and his
defence the Northern Macedonian debutants took an early two-goal
aggregate lead: Loading Image...
but Kristinn Steindórsson volleyed in a loose ball:
Loading Image...
and Breiðablik captain Höskuldur Gunnlaugsson beat Stefan Tasev with a
shot from distance that the Tikveš probably should have been able to
keep out: Loading Image...
to level the tie, and two minutes from time veteran defender Daniel
Mojsov slid in to prevent Kristófer Kristinsson from scoring and only
managed to deflect the ball past his own keeper:
Loading Image...

A very successful matchday for Iceland. Didn't really look like that
after the first leg.
