Como is a beautiful place though, so an easy pick
(plus there’s also Matthias Braunöder and his Ralph
Wiggum haircut).

You are the guide to Italian football folklore for at least one Italian.
You may want to put it on your CV.

Explanation of the ban(n|t)er: the name of the inhabitants of Como is
Comaschi. But "co' maschi" = "coi maschi" = "with males". So when you
start to read the sentence, you interpret it as "You inhabitants with
Como", but when you read the rest "we with females", you reinterpret
the first part. (Unfortunately homophoby is not so dead that I have to
explain why this was considered an insult.)

[I should have asked ChatGPT to explain in order to save time. ...But
can ChatGPT explain it? It involves puns (and Italian), not a strong
point of current AIs. Time for a little test:
- GPT4o: "Varese fans are mocking Como fans by implying that while
people from Como are perhaps inferior or preoccupied with something else
(maybe the game), Varese fans are associating themselves with "being
with women," possibly implying superiority, virility, or attractiveness."
- Claude 3 Opus: "By dropping the letter "n," the phrase "co le femmine"
sounds similar to "colle femmine," which could be translated as "hills
women." This banner is likely a mocking or insulting message directed at
the Como fans, implying that while the Como fans are from the city, the
Varese fans are with the women from the hills (possibly referring to the
area around Varese, which is known for its hills and lakes)."
- Gemini 1.5 Pro: fail "This phrase implies that Varese fans are
sexually involved with the wives or girlfriends of Como supporters."

I love you, but I hate you. I am supposed to do important things like
managing Fantasy Scout and shit.

First of all, "semo tutti parrucchieri" = "we are all hairdressers" in
the Roman dialect. Hairdressers do not work on Monday. I had to check
the web to get it, so 0 points for milAIvella.

---

*ChatGPT4o* knew it:

"The banner "Semo tutti parrucchieri" ("We are all hairdressers" in
Roman dialect) displayed by Roma fans at the Fiorentina-Roma match in
April 2001 was a humorous and sarcastic response to a decision made by
the Italian authorities to reschedule the match from Sunday to Monday
for security reasons.

Here’s the background: The Italian authorities, fearing violence between
rival fans, moved the match to Monday in an attempt to reduce the number
of traveling Roma supporters. They believed that a weekday game would
discourage many fans from attending, as they would have work or other
obligations. However, thousands of Roma fans still made the trip to
Florence.

By displaying the banner "Semo tutti parrucchieri," the Roma supporters
were poking fun at the idea that they were all hairdressers. This was
because hairdressers traditionally had Mondays off in Italy, which meant
they could easily attend the match despite the rescheduling.
Essentially, the banner was a witty way for the fans to mock the
authorities' assumption that moving the match to Monday would prevent
them from showing up. It highlighted the fact that they were still able
to attend, regardless of the day of the week."

---

Llama 3.1 405b did not knew it:

"I cannot verify the reasons behind the banner "Semo tutti parrucchieri"
displayed by Roma fans at the match."

---

*Gemini 1.5 Pro* had tried the same substance as yesterday:

"The banner "Semo tutti parrucchieri" ("We are all hairdressers" in
Roman dialect) displayed by Roma fans in Florence in April 2001 was a
sarcastic response to a security measure taken by Florentine authorities.

Here's the context:

High tensions: Matches between Fiorentina and Roma were known for being
heated affairs with a history of hooliganism.

Postponement and restrictions: Due to fears of violence, the match was
postponed from Sunday to Monday. Additionally, authorities tried to
limit the number of Roma fans attending by only allowing entry to those
with proof of residence in Florence and the surrounding province.

Sarcastic protest: The "Semo tutti parrucchieri" banner was a way for
Roma fans to mock the authorities' attempt to limit their presence. It
implied that they had all falsely claimed to be hairdressers residing in
Florence just to attend the game.

This incident became famous for highlighting the absurdity of the
situation and the lengths football fans would go to support their teams,
even in the face of restrictions. It also underscored the deep-seated
rivalry between the two clubs."

---

But today I will go to Claude 3 Opus' pusher. He's evidently got the
good one:

"The Roma fans displayed the banner "Semo tutti parrucchieri" (which
translates to "We are all hairdressers") as a show of solidarity with
their captain Francesco Totti.

A few days before the match, Totti had been involved in an altercation
with Fiorentina midfielder Enzo Maresca during a Italy national team
training session. Maresca had reportedly insulted Totti, calling him a
"hairdresser" (parrucchiere in Italian), likely referring to Totti's
well-groomed appearance.

The Roma fans, known for their fierce loyalty to Totti, decided to
embrace the insult and turn it into a message of unity. By proclaiming
"We are all hairdressers," they were essentially saying that if Totti
was a hairdresser, then so were all of them, and that they stood behind
their captain no matter what.

The banner became an iconic moment in the history of Roma's supporters
and a testament to their unwavering support for Francesco Totti, who
spent his entire career with the club and is widely considered one of

Clever play to pick after the deadline. Now the opponent have to wrestle
with either ignoring it or sticking to the rules in this crusial, season
defining match. And if you do stick to the rules, how humiliating will
it be to then lose, despite having to match to get the result in.
Perhaps it's best to not pick at all, and just leave it to random?

But random also involves the game master, so...

Apologies, I had in-laws from Belgium visiting, and we were travelling

Incidentally, given that most picked matches seem to be Sunday ones, why
is the entry time so (Weds lunch time for me) most weeks ?

Results and standings:

Tier 1
----
milivella 1-1 The Doctor (Fulham - West Ham)
Futbolmetrix 2-2 Werner Pichler (Bologna - Como)

Pts M GF GA GD Picks Team
10 5 8 4 4 4 The Doctor
8 5 9 6 3 5 Futbolmetrix
5 5 4 7 -3 5 milivella

Two last-minute equalizers mean that everything stays the same in Tier
1. That is, milivella in last place and bound for relegation. The title
will be decided in a head-to-head showdown between Doc and me.

Tier 2
----
MH 0-1 Jesper Lauridsen (Tottenham - Arsenal)
Futbolmetrix 2-2 Werner Pichler (Bologna - Como)

Pts M GF GA GD Picks Team
7 5 9 9 0 5 Werner Pichler
7 5 5 7 -2 5 Jesper Lauridsen
4 5 4 6 -2 3 MH

MH pays dearly for his late pick, but he could still get promoted by
beating Werner by two goals in the last matchday, and some help from
milivella.

Tier 3
----
Lléo 1-1 Mark (Fulham - West Ham)
Blueshirt 1-1 Jesus Petry (Genoa - Roma)

Mark's late equalizer repels upstart Lleo's assault and keeps him in
first place. But everything still possible in the promotion race. Wooden

9 5 8 6 2 5 Mark
7 5 4 3 1 5 Lléo
6 5 6 4 2 5 Blueshirt
2 5 4 9 -5 5 Jesus Petry
Mark's late equalizer repels upstart Lleo's assault and keeps
him in first place. But everything still possible in the
promotion race. Wooden spoon goes to Jesus.
Match day 6 schedule to be posted shortly.
I don't understand how the scoring for this works as one of my
picks was Arsenal, who did better than Genoa.

Jesus (your opponent) picked Roma. You only get to choose the best of
your two picks if your opponent doesn't pick. There is (in theory) a bit
of a home-field advantage in this game, but not that large!

What if I had only picked one team... say Arsenal?

Interesting! I don't think we have ever had such a case. But I would say
that if the home player picks only one team, it counts as an incomplete
pick. This means that the away player gets to pick whichever team he
likes best out of the unpicked matchup, and his score will be the best
outcome of his two picks. Example:

- You (home player) pick only Arsenal
- Jesus (away player) picks Tottenham (forced) and Roma (free pick)
- Results: TOT-ARS 0-1, GEN-ROM 1-1. Jesus gets his best outcome out of
his two picks, i.e., Roma. The selected matchup is Genoa-Roma, and you
both go home with one point.

Ah, and what if the away player also picks only one match? In that case
you both get a 10 point deduction for annoying the gamemaster.

So the 'home' pick is two teams, but it's the 'away' pick [of
one team] that decides what match that will count? So basically,
'away' gets the advantage! ;-)

And there was me thinking Arsenal [predictably] winning
yesterday was a good result.

Hmmm, it's interesting though... I will have to remember that
the next time I am the 'away' pick.

Well, not exactly, because the home player gets to choose first, so they
constrain the choices of the away player.

Now that you understand the rules, what's to stop you from winning the
next 10 seasons of UPT?

Being in Tier 3. Blueshirt FC could win promotion 2 years in a row and
then win the League 8 years in a row; they couldn't win it all 10 years
though. :-)

Blueshirt FC have as much chance of wining anything as Chelsea
FC have...

Hmmm... doesn't seem much of a home advantage to me, as the
'away' pick dictates the match that actually counts. But I've
remembered that for this week's pick, so we'll see how we go
from here now there's some added nuance involved.

Not really understanding them properly but winging it
week-by-week, probably ;-)

Unsophisticated Prediction Tiers Season 59 - League ENG/ITA Match Day 5
Tier 1
----
milivella 1-1 The Doctor (Fulham - West Ham)
Futbolmetrix 2-2 Werner Pichler (Bologna - Como)
Pts M GF GA GD Picks Team
10 5 8 4 4 4 The Doctor
8 5 9 6 3 5 Futbolmetrix
5 5 4 7 -3 5 milivella
Two last-minute equalizers mean that everything stays the same in Tier
1. That is, milivella in last place and bound for relegation. The
title will be decided in a head-to-head showdown between Doc and me.
Tier 2
----
MH 0-1 Jesper Lauridsen (Tottenham - Arsenal)
Futbolmetrix 2-2 Werner Pichler (Bologna - Como)
Pts M GF GA GD Picks Team
7 5 9 9 0 5 Werner Pichler
7 5 5 7 -2 5 Jesper Lauridsen
4 5 4 6 -2 3 MH
MH pays dearly for his late pick, but he could still get promoted by
beating Werner by two goals in the last matchday, and some help from
milivella.
Tier 3
----
Lléo 1-1 Mark (Fulham - West Ham)
Blueshirt 1-1 Jesus Petry (Genoa - Roma)

Is it the top 2 that win promotion from Tier 3 this season? I can't
remember.

Yes, top two get promoted from Tier 3, but only one team gets promoted
from Tier 2, and only one team gets relegated from Tiers 1 and 2, so
that next season we will have a 3-4-3 lineup (barring additional players
joining UPT). Thanks for the reminder.
