Hurrah, the Preliminary Round is gone!

Draw for Champions League 1st Qualifying Round (July 9/10 and 16/17)
* = seeded team

Winners go to CLQ2, Losers go to ConfLQ2 (they dropped the 'Europa'
moniker from the Conference League)
The two losers of the Panevėžys/HJK and RFS/Larne ties will receive a
bye to ConfLQ3.

ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK)* v FK Struga (MKD)
The New Saints FC (WAL)* v FK Dečić (MNE)
FK Borac Banja Luka (BIH)* v KF Egnatia (ALB)
Ħamrun Spartans F.C. (MLT) v Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB)*
KF Ballkani (KOS)* v UE Santa Coloma (AND)

FC Flora (EST)* v NK Celje (SLO)
KÍ (FAR)* v FC Differdange 03 (LUX)
FK Panevėžys (LTU) v HJK (FIN)*
FK RFS (LAT)* v Larne FC (NIR)
KF Víkingur (ISL) v Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL)*

AC Virtus (SMR) v FC FCSB (ROM)*
PFC Ludogorets 1945 (BUL)* v FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO)
FC Ordabasy (KAZ) v FC Petrocub Hîncești (MDA)*
FC Dinamo Minsk (BLR) v FC Pyunik (ARM)*

A lot of familiar faces from the last seasons as repeat champions here,
and the only completely new team are the Sammarinese maiden champions
Virtus (who would already have qualified for last season's Conference
League, but were still banned then because of a match fixing scandal
back in 2017).

There are also a number of other teams making their Champions League
debut thanks to their first domestic title - Dečić, Egnatia, UE Santa
Coloma (local rivals FC Santa Coloma have been much more successful,
with 13 Andorran titles), FC Differdange (as fusion club; predecessors
Red Boys Differdange had won six Luxembourg titles, the last one in
1978/79), Panevėžys (in their current guise - bankrupt predecessor club
Ekranas had won the Lithuanian title seven times), Ordabasy, and
Petrocub.

Something that hasn't changed from the previous qualification scheme -
CLQ1 is already a hugely important round for the champions of smaller
nations, since surviving it means that you have three shots at
qualifying for a European group phase.

This is especially important for the few remaining leagues that still
have never managed to send a team to a group stage, i.e. San Marino,
Andorra, Malta, Montenegro, Northern Ireland, and Wales. So the Ħamrun
Spartans playing the Gibraltarian Red Imps and The New Saints and Dečić
playing each other might take on a special significance.

Beat a team from Andorra and you're in a group stage, with all the
financial and ranking advantages that entails.

OTOH, if you're not champions, you get to play the coming champions of
Belgium in the first round. And that with no safety net.

Euro? What Euro?

Champions League 1st Qualifying Round, 1st leg
* = seeded team

July 9

FK Panevėžys (LTU) v HJK (FIN)* 3-0 (1-0)
(Veliulis 17', Gorobsov 65' (pen), Mbo 67'; Red Card: Dieng (Pan) 71')

It's always helpful when two teams from summer leagues play each other
since you already have a rough idea where they stand at this point of
the season. In this case, last year's Lithuanian champions Panevėžys are
currently hovering around the relegation zone of the A Lyga, while HJK
recently got unceremoniously kicked out of the Finnish Cup by UPT
favourites EIF, and lost 0-3 in the league against Ilves.

So two teams in crisis then, yet it came as a surprise just how much the
Lithuanians dominated the match. Ernestas Veliulis scored the first goal
of this European season by slotting in a low cross from Panevėžys's
Slovakian journeyman leftback Róbert Mazáň (Slovakia, Spain 2nd div,
Italy 2nd div, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Lithuania):
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452174/24805-Record_2024_07_09_19_17_41_913.mp4
A penalty and another tap-in by Gillingham-trained Congolese striker
Noel Mbo then compounded the result despite a stupid second yellow for
Panevėžys's Senegalese striker Cheikhou Dieng, a former mainstay in the
lower reaches of the Austrian League.

Ħamrun Spartans FC (MLT) v Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB)* 0-1 (0-1)
(Britto 37'; Red Cards: Elionay (Ħam) 10'; Gómez (Lin) 45')

Elionay, one of five Brazilians in the Spartans' starting line-up, saw
an early red card for a high foot against Tjay De Barr, and against ten
men Ethan Britto got the winner for the Imps with a Gakpo-like move:
https://i.giphy.com/EURnHieeTgmfLuCp4i.webp
Kike Gómez's second yellow meant that the Maltese champions were back in
with a shout in the second half, but the Gibraltarians held on for only
their second ever away win in Europe.

The New Saints FC (WAL)* v FK Dečić (MNE) 3-0 (3-0)
(Young 4', 28', Davies 39')

Aston Villa youth product Brad Young scored an early brace with two
headers, and after another cross had thrown the Montenegrin defence into
disarray Dan Davies pounced from short range:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452176/24830-Record_2024_07_09_22_32_47_944.mp4
to keep Wales's chances to reach a first ever group phase very much
alive.

UE Santa Coloma (AND) v KF Ballkani (KOS)* 1-2 (1-1)
(El Ghazoui 22'; Emërllahu 42' (pen), Karrica 90')

Moroccan-Spanish midfielder Youssef El Ghazoui gave the maiden Andorran
champions the shock lead with a deflected shot, but a penalty and a
last-gasp angled shot spared the Kosovars the blushes and gave poor
UE Santa Coloma (historically the weaker of the two Santa Coloma clubs)
their 17th defeat in their 17th European encounter.

KF Víkingur (ISL) v Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL)* 0-0 (0-0)
(Red Card: Nugent 81')

17-2 corner kicks for the Icelanders, but no breakthrough.

AC Virtus (SMR) v FC FCSB (ROM)* 1-7 (0-5)
(Battistini 86'; Olaru 6' (pen), 11', 37', Popa 22', 27',
Miculescu 70', 73')

Just for these matches Virtus have brought in 39-year-old longtime
Serie B striker Federico Piovaccari, Romanian champion with Steaua 11
years ago, and then he was only subbed in eight minutes from time, what
a waste. At the other end, Darius Olaru played two minutes in Romania-
Netherlands on July 2nd and scored a hat trick in this one, just one
week later. No holidays for you, boy!

July 10

FC Ordabasy (KAZ) v FC Petrocub Hîncești (MDA)* 0-0 (0-0)

Even match between the two Champions League debutants, and the one that
drew the biggest crowd of the matchday - 16,500 attendance in Shymkent's
Kazhymukan Munaitpasov Stadium.

FC Flora (EST)* v NK Celje (SLO) 0-5 (0-3)
(Matko 7', Vukliševič 10', Zabukovnik 45'+1, Aarons 71', Svetlin 90')

The gulf in class already became apparent within the first twenty
minutes of the tie during which Aljoša Matko also fired a penalty over
the crossbar. Jamaican international Rolando Aarons, cousin of
Bournemouth rightback Max Aarons, duped the Estonian defence for Celje's
fourth:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452181/25005-Record_2024_07_10_22_27_51_507.mp4

ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK)* v FK Struga (MKD) 4-2 (2-0)
(Weiss 16', Mak 36', Kucka 85', 90'+1; Ibraimi 55' (pen), 74')

Vladimír Weiss raced clear to give Slovan an early lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452182/24976-Record_2024_07_10_19_17_38_382.mp4
but that the North Macedonian champions from the shores of Lake Ohrid
were no pushovers was already evident just two minutes later when their
equaliser was disallowed for a hair's breadth offside. Róbert Mak, back
in his home country after twenty years of playing abroad, added a second
with a deflected shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452182/24987-Record_2024_07_10_19_37_13_121.mp4
Besart Ibraimi, at age 37 still a force in North Macedonian club
football, first drew and converted a penalty and then tapped in from
short range to level the score:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452182/24999-Record_2024_07_10_20_34_41_999.mp4
But Juraj Kucka, also 37, and who theoretically could have played a Euro
semifinal the very same day, emphatically headed in two late goals to
give the Slovakian champions a comfortable lead for the return leg after
all:

FK RFS (LAT)* v Larne FC (NIR) 3-0 (1-0)
(Ķigurs 30', Balodis 49', Panić 60')

Unlike Wales, the champions of Northern Ireland's mission to reach a
first ever group phase got off to a terrible start in Latvia. Mārtiņš
Ķigurs slotted in a cross from near the penalty spot, Daniels Balodis
headed in after a corner kick, and Serbian midfielder Stefan Panić
scored the third with a nice free-kick:
Loading Image...

KÍ (FAR)* v FC Differdange 03 (LUX) 2-0 (2-0)
(Frederiksberg 12', 45'+4 (pen))

Árni Frederiksberg is back! After last year's sensational qualification
campaign he was again Klaksvík's star performer, and scored with a shot
from distance and from the spot.

PFC Ludogorets 1945 (BUL)* v FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO) 3-1 (2-0)
(Tekpetey 13', Rick 24', Witry 72'; Mamuchashvili 62')

Following the Georgian template of fighting valiantly but ultimately in
vain, Dinamo could entertain a little more hope for the return leg
following Vladimer Mamuchashvili's nicely worked goal, but a well-struck
free-kick by Norwegian rightback Aslak Fonn Witry restored Ludogorets's
comfortable two-goal lead.

FC Dinamo Minsk (BLR) v FC Pyunik (ARM)* 0-0 (0-0)

As has become usual, Dinamo played this in Mezőkövesd in eastern
Hungary. The Belarusian champions had more of the game, but this
scoreless draw combined with the Red Imps' win the day before means
that Belarus are currently second-from-last in the UEFA ranking, with
only San Marino behind them.

FK Borac Banja Luka (BIH)* v KF Egnatia (ALB) 1-0 (0-0)
(Hrelja 90'+6; Red Cards: Zejnullai (Egn) 58', Ndreca (Egn) 90'+11)

I wonder what the Over/Under odds for Red Cards were for this one.
The substitute Damir Hrelja headed in Borac's winner deep in stoppage
time: Loading Image...

KF Ballkani (KOS)* v UE SANTA COLOMA (AND) 1-2 aet (0-0, 0-1), 3-3 on
aggregate, Santa Coloma win 6-5 on penalties
(Hamidi 109'; Hamidi 90'+2 (og), De Jesús 102';
Red Card: Adetunji (Bal) 38')

Now this is the kind of drama I'm here for!

Sunday Adetunji, one cap for Nigeria, saw a VAR-approved and fully
deserved red card for throwing an elbow against Miguel López, and
against ten men the Andorrans actually managed to score the aggregate
equaliser in stoppage time when a wicked corner kick by Atlético Madrid
youth product Andrés Mohedano was awkwardly headed into his own net by
Ballkani's Algerian winger Walid Hamidi:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452191/25426-Record_2024_07_16_21_04_23_416.mp4
Two substitutes then combined for UE Santa Coloma's second as Paraguayan
forward Franco de Jesús tapped in Dacu's cross, but Hamidi made some
amends for his earlier mishap when his turn-and-shot sent the tie to
penalties.

In the shootout, Lindon Emërllahu sent Ballkani's first effort against
the post while on the Andorran side de Jesús was lucky that he was
allowed to repeat his weak penalty, but when David Virgili could have
won it for UE Santa Coloma he sent a woeful Panenka attempt straight
into the arms of Ballkani keeper Koliçi. Didn't matter though as five
kicks later Ballkani centre-back Astrit Thaqi also saw his poor effort
held on to by UESC's Spanish keeper Juanpe Navarro:
Loading Image...

This was UE Santa Coloma's first ever European game that they didn't
lose (at the 18th attempt), and also the first time an Andorran team
reaches the 2nd round of the Champions League qualifiers. They will now
have three chances to at least make the Conference League group phase.

And I guess it's also another proof how getting rid of the Away Goal
Rule has not actually hurt smaller clubs, on the contrary.

LINCOLN RED IMPS FC (GIB)* v Ħamrun Spartans FC (MLT) 0-1 aet (0-0,
0-1), 1-1 on aggregate, Red Imps win 5-4 on penalties
(Vitão 89'; Red Card: Bent (Lin) 5')

In the first leg it had been the Spartans who had received an early red
card, this time it was Imps midfielder Dan Bent who got deservedly sent
off for a studs-up challenge against the knee of Ħamrun's Brazilian
veteran Eder. VAR giveth and VAR taketh though, and soon after a goal by
Raphael Lopes, another of the Spartans' Brazilian contingent, was
cancelled for a toe-length offside. Still, similar to UE Santa Coloma
just a little earlier, the Maltese managed to drag the tie to extra time
when Vitão, yet another Brazilian, collected a long cross by Ryan
Camenzuli for the very late aggregate equaliser. No more goals in extra
time though, and in what was the Red Imps' first ever European shootout
the first nine penalties were all converted until Malta NT captain Steve
Borg skyed the decisive fifth effort over the crossbar. Resistance is
not futile.

HJK (FIN)* v FK PANEVĖŽYS (LTU) 1-1 (1-1), 1-4 on aggregate
(Erwin 38'; Veliulis 45')

Another disappointingly harmless performance by the Finnish champions.
A header by Scottish globetrotter Lee Erwin (who previously played in
Iran and Lebanon) gave them the lead with their first effort on goal,
but they also allowed the Lithuanian relegation battlers to equalise
with a very easy solo run:
Loading Image...

FC Pyunik (ARM)* v FC DINAMO MINSK (BLR) 0-1 (0-0), 0-1 on aggregate
(Gavrilovich 90' (pen))

After 180 goalless minutes the tie was decided by a clumsy and unlucky
last-minute challenge in the box.

NK CELJE (SLO) v FC Flora (EST)* 2-1 (0-1), 7-1 on aggregate
(Matko 73' (pen), Karničnik 76'; Varjund 12')

17-year-old Estonian striker hope Tony Varjund slotted in for a nice
opener:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452192/25419-Record_2024_07_16_20_59_37_222.mp4
but late on the Slovenians secured all coefficient points from the
spot and thanks to a well-placed shot by Žan Karničnik, who had played
every single minute for Slovenia at the Euros:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452192/25421-Record_2024_07_16_21_00_28_540.mp4

FC FCSB (ROM)* v AC Virtus (SMR) 4-0 (3-0), 11-1 on aggregate
(Băluță 20', Edjouma 28', 36', Miculescu 72')

Olaru had to play for 30 minutes in this one as well. They really ought
to give the guy some rest.

FK Dečić (MNE) v THE NEW SAINTS FC (WAL)* 1-1 (0-1), 1-4 on aggregate
(Kajević 72'; Young 43' (pen))

Brad Young's penalty saw the Welsh champions through to the next round,
but longtime Čukarički player Asmir Kajević at least saved some much-
needed coefficient points for Montenegro.

SHAMROCK ROVERS FC (IRL)* v KF Víkingur (ISL) 2-1 (2-0), 2-1 on aggregate
(Kenny 8', 20'; Hansen 60'; Red Card: Byrne (Sha) 74')

Some more drama. Irish Under-21 international striker Johnny Kenny
scored an early brace, both with nice solo efforts on the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452195/25428-Record_2024_07_16_22_41_06_146.mp4
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452195/25429-Record_2024_07_16_22_41_29_812.mp4
but Vikingur's Danish veteran Nikolaj Hansen halved the deficit by
heading in a cross from short range, and Jack Byrne's sending off with a
second booking gave the Icelandic champions a quarter of an hour against
ten men to level the aggregate score. That opportunity finally came in
the 98th minute, but Hansen sent his penalty against the right post.

July 17

FK Struga (MKD) v ŠK SLOVAN BRATISLAVA (SLK)* 1-2 (0-2), 3-6 on aggregate
(Compaoré 85'; Weiss 9', Ristevski 34' (og))

As in previous years, at this early stage Struga could play this in
Ohrid close to their actual home, but to little avail as a nice solo
effort by Vladimír Weiss gave Slovan the early lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452196/25453-Record_2024_07_17_17_13_02_153.mp4
and in trying to prevent David Strelec from going in alone on goal Kire
Ristevski instead lobbed the ball over his own keeper Dujmović:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452196/25455-Record_2024_07_17_17_35_48_66.mp4
Former Burkinabé international Bassirou Compaoré headed in a late
consolation goal for the Northern Macedonian champions.

FC Differdange 03 (LUX) v KÍ (FAR)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-2 on aggregate
(Red Card: Bedouret (Dif) 34')

As in the first match much more possession and shots for Differdange,
but they also shot themselves in the foot when their Argentine defender
Juan Bedouret got sent off for a studs-up tackle against Páll
Klettskarð.

Malmö are next up for Klaksvík. Last year KÍ managed to eliminate the
Swedish champions Häcken at the same stage.

FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO) v PFC LUDOGORETS 1945 (BUL)* 1-0 (1-0), 2-3 on
aggregate
(Mamuchashvili 3')

The Georgian champions made this a dicey affair when they punished
listless Bulgarian defending already early on:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/452198/25484-Record_2024_07_17_22_21_06_517.mp4
but their potential aggregate equaliser was cancelled by VAR, and in the
89th minute Batumi's Senegalese winger Honoré Gomis (Bafétimbi's
cousin) hit the woodwork. Georgian teams are cursed.

FC PETROCUB HÎNCEȘTI (MDA)* v FC Ordabasy (KAZ) 1-0 (1-0), 1-0 on aggregate
(Lungu 34')

Teodor Lungu got the decisive goal with a nice volley from distance.
Unlike Sheriff, Petrocub are fielding a predominantly Moldovan line-up.

KF Egnatia (ALB) v FK BORAC BANJA LUKA (BIH)* 2-1 (1-1), 2-2 on
aggregate, Borac win 4-1 on penalties
(İbrahimoğlu 17', Doukouo 82'; Lukić 30';
Red Card: Žižovic (Bor, manager) 94')

Rapid Wien youth product Melih İbrahimoğlu, whose career never quite
panned out as he himself would have probably expected, fired in from
just inside the box to level the aggregate score:
Loading Image...
but with their first proper opportunity Borac got the somewhat lucky
equaliser: Loading Image...
Late on young Ivorian striker Lorougnon Doukouo tapped in from short
range to send the tie to extra time, and eventually penalties, where
the Albanian champions missed two of their first four spot kicks - the
second shootout loss for Egnatia in their second European tie.

Larne FC (NIR) v FK RFS (LAT)* 0-4 (0-3), 0-7 on aggregate
(Deocleciano 38', Lemajić 44', Ikaunieks 45'+3, Diomandé 56')

Northern Irish club football really is a bit tragic.

It's especially tough for nations like Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and
Georgia, who are 'big enough' to have reached the knock-out stage, but
also 'small enough' to have to start the qualification process in early
July.

I've alluded to how some of their players (Olaru, Kucka, Karničnik)
didn't have almost any rest between the Round of 16 and the first set of
qualifiers.

But it's been that way for almost every major tournament in the last
decades. Qatar was an exception, but that one obviously engendered
different problems.

As almost every year, this is one of the more boring qualifying rounds.
The gap between seeds and non-seeds is probably nowhere as big as in
CLQ2, and surprises are few and far between.

July 23

Champions Path

FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR)* v FK RFS (LAT) 4-0 (3-0)
(Mikkelsen 2', 76', Saltnes 18', Kapskarmo 40')

The Norwegian champions (and current league leaders) didn't take long to
make their superiority count - August Mikkelsen found himself in tons of
space to curl in a shot at the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/tennis/2024/458391/25792-Record_2024_07_23_18_22_49_399.mp4
and Bodø veteran Ulrik Saltnes buried the rebound after RFS's new
Cameroonian keeper Fabrice Ondoa (André Onana's cousin) was
inadvertently tested by his own defender Balodis:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458140/25805-2-0.mp4
Saltnes then provided the low cross that Oscar Kapskarmo tapped in for
Bodø's third, and late on Mikkelsen curled in a great shot to finish
the rout:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458140/25807-4-0.mp4

FK Panevėžys (LTU)* v Jagiellonia Białystok (POL) 0-4 (0-3)
(Imaz 15', 28', 29', Hansen 80')

Panevėžys showed why last year's champions are currently dead last in
the Lithuanian summer league, and it's indeed a bit mysterious that in
the previous round they managed to eliminate HJK without even a fuss.

Two easy tap-ins and a nice volley gave Jagiellonia's Spanish striker
Jesús Imaz a hat trick already within the first half hour, and late on
Norwegian winger Kristoffer Hansen slotted in the fourth.

It's a comparatively short hop across the border from Białystok in
northeastern Poland to Panevėžys in Lithuania, and Jagiellonia fans
took full advantage:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GTL8SNGXAAoddLE?format=jpg&name=large

Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB) v Qarabağ FK (AZE)* 0-2 (0-1)
(Juninho 45'+2, Bayramov 75')

Brazilian in the East Juninho chested down a cross before volleying in,
and left-back Tural Bayramov added a second with a sumptuous shot from
distance: Loading Image...
in what was ultimatively an easy win for the Azeri.

APOEL FC (CYP)* v FC Petrocub Hîncești (MDA) 1-0 (1-0)
(Marquinhos 38' (pen))

The Moldovans generally had more of the game, but the decisive moment of
the match came when APOEL's new Serbian striker Stefan Dražić broke
through into the box and was bodychecked by Ion Bors, with Brazilian in
the East Marquinhos calmly converting the ensuing penalty.

Malmö FF (SWE)* v KÍ (FAR) 4-1 (3-0)
(Berg Johnsen 21', 43', Bolin 37', Rieks 85'; Frederiksberg 71')

Unlike Häcken a year ago Malmö didn't make a mess out of things against
the Faroese champions (it probably also helped a bit that they played
the first leg at home). Lasse Berg Johnsen rifled in the opener from
20 metres:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458144/25810-Record_2024_07_23_21_07_58_886.mp4
Hugo Bolin slotted in a loose ball after appropriately named Faroese
defender Færø had lost the ball in front of his own box and KÍ keeper
Jensen had parried Isaac Kiese Thelin's back-heel:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458144/25811-Record_2024_07_23_21_09_12_845.mp4
and Berg Johnsen wrong-footed his almost namesake Jensen with another
shot from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458144/25812-Record_2024_07_23_21_10_00_85.mp4
At least Árni Frederiksberg still got to do his thing and tunnelled
Malmö keeper Dahlin:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458144/25813-Record_2024_07_23_21_10_56_376.mp4
before Søren Rieks fired in the fourth following a corner kick.

FC FCSB (ROM) v Maccabi Tel Aviv FC (ISR)* 1-1 (0-0)
(Dawa 76'; D. Biton 71')

Not-Steaua keeper Târnovanu saved from short distance against Maccabi's
young Ghanaian winger Henry Addo, but Dan Biton volleyed in the rebound:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458145/25821-Record_2024_07_23_22_25_17_131.mp4
Just a couple of minutes later Cameroonian centre-back Joyskim Dawa
headed in a free-kick for the equaliser.

Ferencvárosi TC (HUN)* v The New Saints FC (WAL) 5-0 (3-0)
(Traoré 15', 21', 54', Zachariassen 24', Marquinhos 62' (pen))

Similar to other games on this matchday, the Hungarian champions all but
secured passage into the next round already inside the first thirty
minutes. Former Sheriff winger Adama Traoré twice took care of loose
balls in the box, Norwegian midfielder Kristoffer Zachariassen slotted
in a low cross by Brazilian in the East Marquinhos (no relation to
APOEL's), Traoré capped off his hat trick by heading in another cross,
and Marquinhos became the second player of that name to convert a
penalty that day.

UE Santa Coloma (AND) v FC Midtjylland (DEN)* 0-3 (0-2)
(Djú 12', Diao 28', Şimşir 63')

One, two, three, four, five - you've got to feel for UESC keeper
Juanpe Navarro:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458147/25818-Record_2024_07_23_21_55_23_697.mp4
Another goal from a cross and a nice curler by Turkish youngster Aral
Şimşir made sure of the expected easy win.

Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL) v AC Sparta Praha (CZE)* 0-2 (0-1)
(Birmančević 38', Wiesner 65')

A series of errors in the Irish defence gifted the Czech champions the
lead: Loading Image...
and despite Leon Pöhls pulling off a row of good saves the Rovers'
German keeper was still beaten by Tomáš Wiesner's lovely volley from Jan
Kuchta's deflected cross:

League Path

FC Lugano (SUI) v Fenerbahçe SK (TUR)* 3-4 (1-1)
(El Wafi 4', Bislimi 64', Valenzuela 90'+4; Džeko 45'+1 (pen), 46', 67',
Kadıoğlu 74')

José Mourinho's debut with Fenerbahçe got off to a bad start when
Italy-born Morocco youth international Ayman El Wafi headed in a cross
by Anto Grgić, but despite a laboured first half the Turks still got the
equaliser just before the break when Dušan Tadić was brought down in the
box and Edin Džeko converted the resulting penalty with a bit of luck.
Immediately after the restart Džeko, still going strong at 38, made it
two following a clever assist by Tadić (not exactly a spring chicken
either anymore): Loading Image...
Lugano once more managed to get level thanks to Uran Bislimi's turn-and-
shot: Loading Image...
but Džeko calmly completed his hat trick after the Swiss defence had
lost the ball in front of their own area. Ferdi Kadıoğlu followed up on
his good form at the Euros by making it four with a precise shot from
distance: Loading Image...
but Lugano at least gave themselves a fighting chance for the return leg
when deep in stoppage time their Argentinian former Columbus Crew left-
back Milton Valenzuela fired an angled shot past Fener keeper Livaković:

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)* v FK Partizan (SRB) 6-2 (3-1)
(Shaparenko 40', Brazhko 43', Karavayev 45'+1, Kabayev 55', Popov 83',
Pikhalonok 90'+2; Saldanha 22' (pen), 66')

As has become usual, this was played in Lublin in Poland. Partizan took
the somewhat surprising lead after their French-Congolese forward Aldo
Kalulu had been brought down in the box by Oleksandr Karavayev, but
three goals in quick succession just before the break turned the game
on its head - Mykola Shaparenko sent Vladyslav Kabayev's cross in
underneath the crossbar:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458148/25824-Record_2024_07_23_22_29_24_63.mp4
youngster Volodymyr Brazhko fired in a bouncing volley:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458148/25825-Record_2024_07_23_22_34_47_936.mp4
and Karavayev made amends for his earlier mistake when his shot was
deflected and looped in over Partizan keeper Jovanović. In the second
half, Kabayev made it four on the break:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458148/25833-Video%20bez%20nazvu_%20Vytvoreno%20pomoci%20aplikace%20Clipchamp%20(11).mp4
and despite former Bahia striker Matheus Saldanha getting his second by
bundling a cross over the line from close range, the Ukrainians added
two more late on - Denys Popov scored after a thunderous free-kick by
man of the match Brazhko had forced Jovanović into an awkward save:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458148/25828-Record_2024_07_23_22_37_27_655.mp4
and two substitutes combined for Dynamo's sixth as Oleksandr Pikhalyonok
slotted in Nazar Voloshyn's assist.

The last 30 European matches for Serbian teams have now resulted in one
win, two draws, and 27 defeats. They are dropping in the UEFA ranking
like a stone.

July 24

Champions Path

PAOK FC (GRE)* v FK Borac Banja Luka (BIH) 3-2 (2-2)
(Koulierakis 17', 39', Troost-Ekong 51'; Herrera 22' (pen),
Kulašin 45'+3)

The Greek champions made surprisingly heavy weather of this at home.
PAOK's young defensive starlet Konstantinos Koulierakis headed them in
front from a corner kick, but immediately afterwards Koulierakis also
caused one of the most bizarre handball penalties I've ever seen:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458151/25899-Record_2024_07_24_20_07_37_541.mp4
The Koulierakis show wasn't over yet though, as he once more found
himself in the right spot at the correct end of the pitch, nodding in
from close range after Borac keeper Šiškovski had parried Magomed
Ozdoyev's volley:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458151/25900-Record_2024_07_24_20_10_38_632.mp4
The Bosnian Serbs once again hit back though as their young winger Enver
Kulašin duped PAOK's Ghanaian left-back Baba Rahman at the far post to
slot in David Vuković's insidious cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458151/25908-Record_2024_07_24_20_18_46_223.mp4
PAOK still got the winner after the break when Šiškovski sailed past a
corner kick and Nigeria NT captain William Troost-Ekong headed into the
empty net, but the return leg in Banja Luka could still become more
difficult than the Greeks might have expected.

PFC Ludogorets 1945 (BUL)* v FC Dinamo Minsk (BLR) 2-0 (2-0)
(Tekpetey 9', Nedelev 45'+1 (pen))

Already early on Ludogorets caught the Belarusians on the break and
Benjamin Tekpetey fired in Jakub Piotrowski's through ball. Todor
Nedelev then despatched a penalty after Dinamo captain Sergey Politevich
had tripped him in the box.

NK Celje (SLO) v ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK)* 1-1 (1-1)
(Bobičanec 7'; Strelec 11'; Red Card: Savvidis (Slo) 31')

Both sides exchanged early goals - Luka Bobičanec sent a direct free-
kick in underneath the Slovakian wall, while David Strelec converted
Vladimir Weiss's assist from close range - but after VAR had overruled
the English ref and shown Kyriakos Savvidis a straight red for his
studs-up tackle against Tamar Svetlin, Slovan had to fight a rearguard
action for the remaining hour - and did so successfully, as their
goalkeeper Takáč bailed them out a number of times.

QARABAĞ FK (AZE)* v Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB) 5-0 (3-0), 7-0 on aggregate
(Juninho 17', 31', 44', Benzia 66', Andrade 72')

Olávio Vieira dos Santos Júnior appears to enjoy life in the Azeri
league much more than previously in the 2nd Portuguese division. His
easy first-half hat trick was followed by an assist to Yassine Benzia
(once a Fantasy Scout pick for France) who fired in from the edge of the
box. Cape Verde international Leandro Andrade also scored with a nice
shot from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458154/26928-Record_2024_07_30_21_15_25_1.mp4

FC Petrocub Hîncești (MDA) v APOEL FC (CYP)* 1-1 (0-0), 1-2 on aggregate
(S. Plătică 60; Marquinhos 65')

Left-back Sergiu Plătică, the younger of Petrocub's Plătică brothers,
with a little luck found himself with the ball at the edge of the area
and sent a precise shot in underneath the crossbar:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458155/26973-Record_2024_07_30_22_39_13_345.mp4
but just five minutes later APOEL, overall the better team, got the goal
that sent them into a European group phase for the first time since
2019/20 when their Brazilian Marquinhos flicked the ball over his marker
and emphatically volleyed in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458155/26972-Record_2024_07_30_22_38_20_535.mp4
The only stain on this goal was that the assist came from Kingsley
Sarfo (look it up, or rather don't).

AC SPARTA PRAHA (CZE)* v Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL) 4-2 (2-1), 6-2 on
aggregate
(Olatunji 29', Ross 41', Sørensen 48', Tuci 71'; Greene 32', 47')

For a couple of years now Sparta possess a distinct Danish flavour, and
even though Brian Priske has left for Feyenoord it's his former
assistant Lars Friis who has now taken over the managerial role. After
Victor Olatunji had headed Sparta into the lead, it was then two Danes
who added to it - Galatasaray loanee Mathias Ross also headed in a
corner kick, and so did former RB Salzburg flop Asger Sørensen. In
between, Aaron Greene scored twice for the plucky Irish, once by
punishing an ill-judged foray by Sparta's - Danish, of course - keeper
Vindahl Jensen:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458156/26842-Record_2024_07_30_19_33_35_620.mp4
and once by nodding in a cross as well. Albanian striker Indrit Tuci
added the fourth, and for once not from a cross, but with a precise shot
from outside the area:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458156/26891-Record_2024_07_30_20_35_01_107.mp4

The New Saints FC (WAL) v FERENCVÁROSI TC (HUN)* 1-2 (0-1), 1-7 on aggregate
(Daniels 90'+1; Zachariassen 43', Rommens 62' (pen))

No coefficient points for Wales, as Kristoffer Zachariassen beat TNS
keeper Roberts with a nice lob:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458158/26988-Record_2024_07_31_00_28_32_298.mp4
and Fradi's new Belgian signing Philippe Rommens added a second from the
spot after Ashley Baker had scythed down Adama Traoré in the box. At
least the Welsh champions scored a consolation goal when Josh Daniels
turned in a cross at the far post, with the Hungarian defence not
looking too engaged:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458158/26964-Record_2024_07_30_22_14_16_657.mp4

ŠK SLOVAN BRATISLAVA (SLK)* v NK Celje (SLO) 5-0 (2-0), 6-1 on aggregate
(Tolić 17', Strelec 30', 72', Mak 60', Barseghyan 75';
Red Cards: Vukliševič (Cel) 16')

Now that Albert Riera has lost his job with bankrupt Girondins Bordeaux,
his previous team Celje have brought him back as their manager, letting
go of Damir Krznar (who had won them the Slovenian title!) in the
process - and a fat lot of good did that act of betrayal do them.

Because Riera's first match back at the helm was an unmitigated
disaster, since a suicidal back pass by Aljaž Krefl led to centre-back
Damjan Vukliševič getting sent off for a last-man foul, and Marko Tolić
scored directly from the ensuing free-kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458159/26920-Record_2024_07_30_21_04_48_265.mp4
Against ten men, David Strelec converted a through ball by Panamanian
international César Blackman, and in the second half Slovan added two
more on the break against overwhelmed Slovenians before Tigran
Barseghyan made it five with a great curler:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458159/26961-Record_2024_07_30_22_11_03_660.mp4

KÍ (FAR) v MALMÖ FF (SWE)* 3-2 (1-1), 4-6 on aggregate
(Berntsson 2', Frederiksberg 65', 90'+5; Bolin 13',
Christiansen 59' (pen))

For once it wasn't Árni Frederiksberg who gave Klaksvík the early lead,
but of course it was still him who delivered the in-swinging free-kick
that Klaksvík's new Swedish centre-back Alexander Berntsson sent looping
over MFF keeper Ricardo Friedrich:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458160/26990-Record_2024_07_31_00_31_46_346.mp4
Soon after Malmö youngster Hugo Bolin ran onto Sergio Peña's through
ball to dash all Faroese hopes of a comeback, and Hallur Hansson's
flying elbow against Søren Rieks gave the Swedes the lead from the spot.
But Arní Frederiksberg wasn't yet done - he scored a corner kick
directly:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458160/26985-Record_2024_07_30_23_18_32_553.mp4
and just like that he did basically the exact same thing from a free-
kick near the corner flag:

FENERBAHÇE SK (TUR)* v FC Lugano (SUI) 2-1 (0-1), 6-4 on aggregate
(Džeko 59', Szymański 90'+3; Mahmoud 7')

As in the first leg, the Swiss underdogs only needed a couple of minutes
to score - a harmless looking ball fell to Hadj Mahmoud outside the
area, and the Tunisian midfielder unleashed an awesome volley straight
into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458157/26976-Record_2024_07_30_22_41_13_853.mp4
Who else to come to Fener and Mourinho's rescue though but Edin Džeko,
the Bosnian headed in Mert Hakan Yandaş's free-kick for the important
equaliser. Lugano continued to chase the overall equaliser, but instead
in stoppage time they even lost the coefficient point, as Sebastian
Szymański tapped in Dušan Tadić's cut-back header.

FK RFS (LAT) v FK BODØ/GLIMT (NOR)* 1-3 (1-1), 1-7 on aggregate
(Ikaunieks 14'; Hauge 40' (pen), Saltnes 82', Høgh 88')

Jānis Ikaunieks slotted in a low cross by Ivorian midfielder Cédric
Kouadio, but any comeback hopes, however slim, were over when on
occasion of a free-kick RFS keeper Ondoa (again, André Onana's cousin)
instead of the ball punched Bodø striker Kapskarmo in the head. Late on,
Kasper Høgh's goal was cancelled by VAR for offside, but the Norwegian
champions nevertheless got the win thanks to Ulrik Saltnes's well-placed
shot: Loading Image...
and Høgh also made it onto the scoresheet regardless by tapping in Adam
Sørensen's low cross at the far post.

FC MIDTJYLLAND (DEN)* v UE Santa Coloma (AND) 1-0 (0-0), 4-0 on aggregate
(Osorio 72'; Red Card: Lluch (San) 48')

Perhaps a bit too minimalistic against ten Andorrans? Darío Osorio's
goal was nice though:
Loading Image...

Maccabi Tel Aviv FC (ISR)* v FC FCSB (ROM) 0-1 (0-0), 1-2 on aggregate
(Baeten 90')

In Honvéd's Bozsik Aréna this was too little by the Israeli, who didn't
have a single shot on goal all match, and they fell to a last-minute
goal on the break - Daniel Popa centred for William Baeten, and not-
Steaua's new Belgian signing (who had spent the previous four seasons
with one of the Uni Craiovas) made no mistake alone in front of Maccabi
keeper Mishpati: Loading Image...

Maccabi were the only actually seeded team (Panevėžys had taken over
HJK's coefficient) to fall at this stage. It's not been a good European
season for Israel so far. Not having proper home games certainly hurts
them, and Maccabi also had players missing due to the Olympics.

JAGIELLONIA BIAŁYSTOK (POL) v FK Panevėžys (LTU)* 3-1 (1-0), 7-1 on
aggregate
(Pululu 12' (pen), 69' (pen), Beneta 84' (og); Gussiås 88')

Thanks to Angolan former Basel striker Afimico Pululu scoring twice from
the spot and Markas Beneta's unlucky ping-pong own goal:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458165/27220-Record_2024_07_31_22_21_02_86.mp4
Jagiellonia walked into their first ever European group phase.
Former Klaksvík forward Sivert Gussiås at least got a consolation goal
for the overmatched Lithuanians (still dead last in their league)
following a similar ping-pong situation in the Jagiellonia box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458165/27218-Record_2024_07_31_22_16_25_926.mp4

FC Dinamo Minsk (BLR) v PFC LUDOGORETS 1945 (BUL)* 1-0 (1-0), 1-2 on
aggregate
(Bakhar 37')

It appears that Ludogorets have taken over what used to be BATE's
modus operandi, that is getting through qualifying rounds with
absolutely uninspired performances. Ivan Bakhar tapped in a cut-back
cross by 17-year-old Trofim Melnichenko for the only goal:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/458166/27238-Record_2024_07_31_23_16_04_726.mp4

FK Borac Banja Luka (BIH) v PAOK FC (GRE)* 0-1 (0-1), 2-4 on aggregate
(Murg 25')

Much less drama than in the first leg. Thomas Murg tapped in Magomed
Ozdoyev's centre halfway through the first half, and the Bosnians didn't
register a single shot on target.

League Path

FK Partizan (SRB) v FC DYNAMO KYIV (UKR)* 0-3 (0-1), 2-9 on aggregate
(Yarmolenko 17', Vanat 68' (pen), Karavayev 90'+3)

A harmless-looking ball over the top eluded the Serbian defence and
Andriy Yarmolenko fired in an angled shot to give Dynamo the early
lead. Svetozar Marković brought down Vladyslav Vanat in the box, and
the young Ukrainian striker converted the penalty himself. In stoppage
time Partizan's biggest aggregate defeat in their European history was
completed by Oleksandr Karavayev on the break.

August 6

Champions Path

Qarabağ FK (AZE)* v PFC Ludogorets 1945 (BUL) 1-2 (0-0)
(Juninho 65'; Almeida 56', Caio Vidal 87';
Red Card: Caio Vidal (Lud) 89')

A bit surprising since so far the Bulgarian champions had been hardly
dazzling, especially away. In a common theme for all matches in this
round the three goals all came from headers - Ludogorets's Portuguese
centre-back Dinis Almeida nodded in a free-kick delivered by Spanish
midfielder Son, Juninho did likewise from Marko Vešović's cross, and
Caio Vidal, like Juninho a Brazilian in the East, headed in the winner,
once again from Son's chipped delivery:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459519/28541-Record_2024_08_06_20_18_03_397.mp4
Minutes later Caio Vidal was sent off with a second yellow for a late
challenge, but Ludogorets held on to the win.

Malmö FF (SWE) v PAOK FC (GRE)* 2-2 (1-1)
(Jansson 28', Nanasi 67'; Taison 42', Baba Rahman 75')

PAOK's main weakness were set pieces, and they conceded twice from
corner kicks - Pontus Jansson headed in Sebastian Nanasi's corner, and
Nanasi subsequently bundled Anders Christiansen's delivery over the
line:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459520/28552-Record_2024_08_06_20_27_41_378.mp4
But the Greek champions twice got the equaliser, too - former Shakhtar
Donetsk mainstay Taison, 36 by now, fired in a loose ball in the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459520/28535-Record_2024_08_06_19_44_15_947.mp4
and Ghanaian left-back Abdul Baba Rahman volleyed in at the far post,
once more following a corner kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459520/28553-Record_2024_08_06_20_35_45_141.mp4

FC Midtjylland (DEN) v Ferencvárosi TC (HUN)* 2-0 (1-0)
(Buksa 17', Djú 69')

With all those Danes taking the field for other teams like Sparta Prague
and RB Salzburg there are hardly any left playing for the Danish
champions, and so the job fell to Midtjylland's freshly signed Polish
striker Adam Buksa to punish a terrible mistake by Fradi's new Brazilian
centre-back Raul Gustavo who had lost the ball to Darío Osorio as last
man. Right before the break, and just after the Hungarians had missed a
gilt-edged chance of their own, Midtjylland were awarded a handball
penalty when Fradi's Ecuadorian left-back Cristian Ramírez painfully
blocked a shot with his wrist, but Aral Şimşir's feeble spot kick down
the middle was easily saved by Ferencváros keeper Dibusz. FCM's young
Turkish forward did much better after the break though as he carried the
ball out of his own half and released Franculino Djú with a perfect
through ball that the Bissau-Guinean youngster calmly chipped past
Dibusz.

AC Sparta Praha (CZE) v FC FCSB (ROM)* 1-1 (0-0)
(Olatunji 78'; Dawa 61')

The Czechs were plagued by defensive mishaps throughout the match, and
not-Steaua took a somewhat surprising but not undeserved lead when their
Cameroonian centre-back Joyskim Dawa dove low to head in Darius Olaru's
corner kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459522/28573-Record_2024_08_06_21_22_40_574.mp4
But Sparta also equalised thanks to a corner that was delivered by
Veljko Birmančević, flapped at by FCSB keeper Ștefan Târnovanu, and
headed in by Victor Olatunji:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459522/28579-Record_2024_08_06_21_37_54_308.mp4
In stoppage time the Romanians were lucky that Birmančević's free-kick
came off the left post, and also that Kaan Kairinen's goal got cancelled
by VAR for a foul in the build-up.

League Path

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) v Rangers FC (SCO)* 1-1 (1-0)
(Yarmolenko 38'; Dessers 90'+4)

I believe Vladyslav Vanat is a name we'll hear more often in the future
since the 22-year-old Ukrainian was once again Dynamo's best player, and
he also delivered the well-placed cross that Andriy Yarmolenko, 12 years
his elder, tapped in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459523/28614-Record_2024_08_06_22_32_17_965.mp4
But the Ukrainians fell back in the second half, and Rangers got the
deserved equaliser deep in stoppage time when Cyriel Dessers volleyed
in a cross by the Czech substitute Václav Černý, newly loaned out from
Wolfsburg.

Lille OSC (FRA)* v Fenerbahçe SK (TUR) 2-1 (1-0)
(Santos 12', Zhegrova 90'+1; Kahveci 80')

Portuguese youngster Tiago Santos tunnelled Ferdi Kadıoğlu to break
through on the right wing and send in a cross that went in off the
backside of Fener's Dutch centre-back Jayden Oosterwolde:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459524/28569-Record_2024_08_06_21_18_48_255.mp4
I'm not exactly sure why UEFA haven't declared this an own goal when
they are wont to do so with much more marginal calls, but they haven't.
İrfan Kahveci curled in a free-kick for the late equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459524/28608-Record_2024_08_06_22_24_42_738.mp4
but in stoppage time Kosovo international Edon Zhegrova finished off a
solo run with a shot that was deflected in by Fener's other centre-back
Çağlar Söyüncü:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459524/28609-Record_2024_08_06_22_26_14_921.mp4

RB Salzburg (AUT)* v FC Twente (NED) 2-1 (1-0)
(Kjærgaard 41', 85'; Vlap 90'+1)

In the first ten minutes one would have thought that the old Salzburg
was back - free-flowing, attack-minded and defensively more than
suspect - but after both sides had missed two or three gilt-edged
opportunities the game calmed down, and the Austrians slowly took
control. I have never been Maurits Kjærgaard's biggest fan, but this was
perhaps his best performance in a Salzburg shirt - he rifled in a volley
after a corner kick:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459525/28611-Record_2024_08_06_22_28_01_509.mp4
and late on was a bit lucky that his angled shot from close range was
deflected past Twente's excellent German keeper Lars Unnerstall. It
wouldn't be a proper Salzburg CL qualifier though without some self-
inflicted damage - Ricky van Wolfswinkel with all the cleverness of his
close to two decades in the game drew a dangerous free-kick at the edge
of the Austrian area, and Michel Vlap's free-kick went through the
porous Salzburg wall and beat Janis Blaswich at his post:

ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK)* v APOEL FC (CYP) 2-0 (0-0)
(Petrović 74' (og), Mak 90'+4)

In a cautious match from both sides the Slovakian champions found the
breakthrough when APOEL's Serbian veteran centre-back Radosav Petrović
volleyed Tigran Barseghyan's cross into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459527/28853-Record_2024_08_07_22_02_13_462.mp4
In stoppage time Róbert Mak was first denied with a shot from distance
by a good save from APOEL's Slovenian keeper Vid Belec, and he then
still scored with an even better shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459527/28859-Record_2024_08_07_22_21_49_938.mp4

Jagiellonia Białystok (POL) v FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR)* 0-1 (0-0)
(Diéguez 58' (og))

The only goal of the game came courtesy of Jagiellonia's Spanish centre-
back Adrián Diéguez who steered Jens Petter Hauge's cross past his own
keeper:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459528/28861-Record_2024_08_07_22_26_50_15.mp4
A couple of minutes later Bodø's second was cancelled by VAR for a foul.

League Path

SK Slavia Praha (CZE)* v Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (BEL) 3-1 (2-0)
(Chorý 19', 41', Dorley 57'; Bužek 73' (og);
Red Card: Fuseini (USG) 85')

Tomáš Chorý headed in Lukáš Provod's cross for the early lead:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459526/28778-Record_2024_08_07_19_24_15_84.mp4
and did likewise from a corner kick by Slavia's Greek-Norwegian
youngster Christos Zafeiris. Oscar Dorley, probably the most successful
Liberia international since George Weah, made it three following a
dreadful pass by Union's Luxembourgeois goalkeeper Anthony Moris:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459526/28803-Record_2024_08_07_20_19_19_590.mp4
The Belgians at least pulled one back when the substitute Alexandr Bužek
under no pressure awkwardly kneed Alessio Castro-Montes's cross into his
own net, leaving the youngster in his debut match for Slavia
disconsolate:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459526/28810-Record_2024_08_07_20_34_19_956.mp4
Late on the young Ghanaian Mohamed Fuseini, who had earned himself a
lucrative (for all parties involved) transfer from Sturm Graz to
Saint-Gilloise with good performances on loan in Denmark, got sent off
for a stupid retaliatory push against David Douděra.

Phase

As much as the second qualifying round is usually the most boring one,
the third regularly throws up close and exciting match-ups.

August 13

Champions Path

APOEL FC (CYP) v ŠK SLOVAN BRATISLAVA (SLK)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-2 on aggregate
(Red Card: Petrović (APO) 81')

APOEL hit the post twice from headers in the first half, but Slovan
defended with more calmness after the break and could have won the match
when Róbert Mak one-on-one with APOEL keeper Belec shot against the
right post. The Cypriots' last hopes for a comeback where dashed when
their Serbian centre-back Radosav Petrović, already responsible for an
own goal in the first leg, earned himself a second yellow for breaking
up a counter-attack.

This is the first time since its introduction in 2021/22 that Slovan
Bratislava won't make an appearance in the Conference League
group/league phase. They've moved up in the world.

FK BODØ/GLIMT (NOR)* v Jagiellonia Białystok (POL) 4-1 (2-1), 5-1 on
aggregate
(Brunstad Fet 34', 56', Määttä 38', Høgh 71'; Berg 4' (og))

Jagiellonia made up the first-leg deficit already four minutes in when
after a goalmouth scramble Jesús Imaz's shot ricocheted off the crossbar
and the back of Glimt captain Patrick Berg:
Loading Image...
But the Norwegian champions were the better team overall, and equalised
through Sondre Brunstad Fet's unstoppable volley into the top corner:
Loading Image...
Isak Määttä, a young Norwegian of Finnish descent, made it two by
slotting in an assist by Jens Petter Hauge (who appears to thrive again
on home soil after his lacklustre stints with Milan and Frankfurt):
Loading Image...
After the break Brunstad Fet got his second with another precise shot
from distance that went in via the left post, and the Danish substitute
Kasper Høgh stabbed home another Hauge assist on the counter.

PAOK FC (GRE)* v MALMÖ FF (SWE) 3-4 aet (3-2, 3-3), 5-6 on aggregate
(Taison 21', Koulierakis 44', Živković 45'+4; Nanasi 10', 45',
Zätterström 90'+7, Christiansen 99')

Now this was something. A high ball was once again PAOK's undoing - this
time around it was a long throw-in that their defence couldn't handle,
and Sebastian Nanasi nodded in at the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29913-Record_2024_08_13_21_07_51_538.mp4
Old man Taison duped the Malmö defence and their keeper Dahlin with a
direct free-kick to get the equaliser:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29914-Record_2024_08_13_21_08_35_173.mp4
The last couple of minutes before the break were wild - Konstantinos
Koulierakis gave PAOK the lead with a fantastic screamer from 30 metres:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29915-Record_2024_08_13_21_09_54_653.mp4
Nanasi once more equalised, again at the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29918-Record_2024_08_13_21_10_27_869.mp4
and Andrija Živković curled one past Dahlin through a forest of legs:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29919-Record_2024_08_13_21_11_04_759.mp4
The second half was less frantic, but deep in stoppage time Malmö were
awarded a free-kick, and once again PAOK's defence crumbled due to a
cross, with Mady Camara's clearing attempt in the end caroming off Nils
Zätterström and into the net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29951-Record_2024_08_13_22_48_56_83.mp4
In extra time 19-year-old Zätterström also boldly left his centre-back
position to provide the brilliant assist that Anders Christiansen
converted for Malmö's eventual winner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459533/29952-Record_2024_08_13_22_49_55_171.mp4

PFC Ludogorets 1945 (BUL) v QARABAĞ FK (AZE)* 2-7 aet (2-3, 2-3), 4-8 on
aggregate
(Duah 13', 23' (pen); Juninho 7', Benzia 45'+1 (pen), 118',
P. Andrade 45'+5, 112', Bayramov 93', Xhixha 111')

Juninho levelled the overall score on the break already early on, but
the Bulgarians took what looked like a comfortable two-goal aggregate
lead thanks to a brace by Swiss international Kwadwo Duah - he got one
by nodding in from short range after Dinis Almeida's header had come off
the crossbar, and one from the spot after VAR had rightfully determined
that Qarabağ's German-Croatian goalkeeper Fabijan Buntić instead of
clearing a long ball had punched Rwan in the face. The Azeris were
awarded a penalty of their own when Deroy Duarte went through the back
of Yassine Benzia, and still in stoppage time of the first half Patrick
Andrade, on as a substitute, and no relation to his fellow Cape Verdean
in Qarabağ's squad Leandro Andrade, rifled in from the edge of the area
to once more level the aggregate score:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459534/29941-Record_2024_08_13_21_56_12_61.mp4
No goals in the second 45 minutes, but the Azeri champions ran riot in
extra time - Toral Bayramov sent a rocket into the top corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459534/29953-Record_2024_08_13_22_55_36_613.mp4
Albanian striker Redon Xhixha fired in at the second attempt after the
Ludogorets defence had messed up their offside trap:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459534/29954-Record_2024_08_13_22_57_54_128.mp4
Patrick Andrade got his second of the night from short range after the
demoralized Bulgarians had let the young substitute Nariman Akhundzade
walk into their box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459534/29955-Record_2024_08_13_22_59_57_240.mp4
and Benzia also scored his second after Ludogorets's new German keeper
Hendrik Bonmann, previously of Wolfsberg, had spilled Júlio Romão's
shot. As they said on the Simpsons - stop, stop, they're already dead.

Ferencvárosi TC (HUN)* v FC MIDTJYLLAND (DEN) 1-1 (1-0), 1-3 on aggregate
(Cissé 17'; Sørensen 50'; Red Card: Raul Gustavo (Fer) 90'+6)

French defender Ibrahim Cissé gave the Hungarian champions some hope by
heading in a free-kick by Israel international Mohammad Abu Fani, but
the Danes put paid to that in the second half when following some good
passing Oliver Sørensen found himself all alone to slot past Ferencváros
keeper Dibusz:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459535/29923-Record_2024_08_13_21_16_02_774.mp4
In stoppage time Fradi's new Brazilian centre-back Raul Gustavo,
formerly of Corinthians, saw a VAR-determined but fully deserved
straight red for stomping on the calf of Darío Osorio.

FC FCSB (ROM)* v AC SPARTA PRAHA (CZE) 2-3 (0-3), 3-4 on aggregate
(Olaru 60', Edjouma 85'; Birmančević 13', 28' (pen), Haraslín 37')

It looked like very smooth sailing for Sparta since they took a
commanding three-goal lead before half-time - Veljko Birmančević tapped
in from short range after Asger Sørensen's header from a corner kick had
been blocked on the goal line, and the Serbian added another from the
spot after Joyskim Dawa had clumsily elbowed Victor Olatunji in the back
of the head. The third was a lovely curled shot by Sparta's Slovakian
winger Lukáš Haraslín:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459536/29917-Record_2024_08_13_21_08_56_323.mp4
But hats off to not-Steaua who didn't give up and were still able to
make this a close affair - Dan Olaru robbed Birmančević of the ball with
a borderline challenge and also curled one past Sparta keeper Vindahl:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459536/29937-Record_2024_08_13_21_48_46_96.mp4
and Frenchman Malcom Edjouma headed in Olaru's lovely ball over the top:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459536/29947-Record_2024_08_13_22_14_20_709.mp4
but in the remaining ten minutes the Romanians failed to generate any
other clear-cut opportunities.

League Path

Fenerbahçe SK (TUR) v LILLE OSC (FRA)* 1-1 aet (0-0, 1-0), 2-3 on aggregate
(Diakité 90'+1 (og); David 118' (pen); Red Card: Mandi (Lil) 109')

Fenerbahçe chased the first-leg deficit for the longest time until in
stoppage time Jayden Oosterwolde's insanely long throw-in was headed
on by Edin Džeko, and Bafodé Diakité, back from the Olympics, unluckily
deflected the ball into his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459531/29910-Zaznam%20obrazovky%202024-08-13%20205942.mp4
In extra time Lille's new Algerian signing from Villarreal Aïssa Mandi
was sent off for a high-boot challenge on İrfan Kahveci, but the French
side still got the decisive goal when a stumbling Oosterwolde awkwardly
blocked Jonathan David's shot with his hands, and VAR - again, correctly
in my mind - awarded the spot kick, despatched by the Canadian.
Mourinho, predictably, after the match: 'if I speak I'm in trouble'. Say
the line, José!

FC Twente (NED) v RB SALZBURG (AUT)* 3-3 (1-2), 4-5 on aggregate
(Hilgers 43', Van Hoorenbeeck 64', Steijn 87'; Kjærgaard 17', Nene 25',
Yeo 46')

Salzburg ran circles around the Dutch in the first half hour, and took a
deserved two-goal lead when Oscar Gloukh, who's actually been excellent
for them since returning from the Olympics, lofted a ball over the top
that Maurits Kjærgaard lobbed over Twente keeper Lars Unnerstall:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459532/29925-Record_2024_08_13_21_24_21_96.mp4
and Ivorian Nene Dorgeles (I'll leave out the description 'young' when
writing about Salzburg players, they're all young) beat Unnerstall at
his near post with a blistering shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459532/29926-Record_2024_08_13_21_25_01_107.mp4
But with the loss of their stalwart centre-back Strahinja Pavlović (off
to Milan) defending crosses has clearly become Salzburg's weak spot, and
Twente halved the deficit just before the break when Mees Hilgers headed
in Carel Eiting's corner kick. Still, 30 seconds into the second half
Moussa Yeo, Salzburg's latest Malian starlet, tapped in Mads Bistrup's
centre:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459532/29928-Record_2024_08_13_21_25_56_72.mp4
and one would think that going up by three goals on aggregate while
clearly being the better team should be fine, right? Wrong, it's
Salzburg in a Champions League qualifier we're talking about here.
Belgian defender Alec Van Hoorenbeeck headed in yet another corner kick
to bring Twente within two, and when Salzburg were given the chance on a
silver platter to close out the tie due to Michel Vlap using his hands
to protect himself from a cross, Kjærgaard's poor penalty was punched
out by Unnerstall. This clearly re-energized the Dutch, and Sem Steijn
volleyed in the equaliser following yet another mix-up in the Salzburg
defence:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459532/29930-Record_2024_08_13_21_27_35_948.mp4
Twente had one more great chance to send the tie to extra time, but
during extremely nervous seven minutes of stoppage time Stejn's turn-
and-shot whistled past the post.

This already feels like very much the Salzburg of old where no reputable
bookie would accept a bet on 'both sides score'. New manager Pep
Lijnders has been a breath of fresh air, but he definitely needs to sort
out those defensive issues.

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (BEL) v SK SLAVIA PRAHA (CZE)* 0-1 (0-0),
1-4 on aggregate
(Jurečka 84')

The Belgians never really came close to making up the first-leg deficit,
and late on Václav Jurečka even tapped in the winner on the break from
Lukáš Provod's centre:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459537/29949-Record_2024_08_13_22_16_11_309.mp4

Rangers FC (SCO)* v FC DYNAMO KYIV (UKR) 0-2 (0-0), 1-3 on aggregate
(Pikhalyonok 82', Voloshyn 84'; Red Card: Jefté 51')

Somewhat justifiably the Scottish feel hard done by because two very
harsh yellows - the second for an alleged elbow that wasn't visible on
any replay - still resulted in a red for Rangers' new Brazilian left-
back Jefté, formerly of APOEL. Up to that point the Ukrainians hadn't
shown anything going forward, but they got the breakthrough against
ten men when Oleksandr Pikhalyonok fired in a precise low shot from
outside the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/459538/29956-Record_2024_08_13_23_30_04_577.mp4
and soon after Nazar Voloshyn volleyed in a loose ball on the break:

Champions Path

GNK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)* v Qarabağ FK (AZE) 3-0 (1-0)
(Pjaca 29', Kulenović 75', 80')

Despite the one-sided final score this was a completely open game, but
one in which only one side took their chances. The Croatians had the
better start - Martin Baturina hit the crossbar following a corner kick
routine:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461587/31264-Record_2024_08_20_21_18_17_822.mp4
and Petar Sučić played in Dinamo returnee Marko Pjaca who beat Fabijan
Buntić at the second attempt after Qarabağ's German-Croatian keeper
hadn't been able to hold on to the shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461587/31264-Record_2024_08_20_21_18_17_822.mp4
After that it was all Qarabağ though - Juninho (three absolute sitters),
Patrick Andrade, and his fellow Cape Verdean countryman Leandro Andrade
all missed the best opportunities, and Yassine Benzia's free-kick went
off the outside of the post. But while the Azeri were pressing for the
equaliser Dinamo scored their second on the break - Baturina with a
great pass found Sandro Kulenović through on goal and the substitute had
no problems slotting past Buntić:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461587/31288-Record_2024_08_20_22_40_15_831.mp4
Baturina also provided the cross that led to Buntić having to save from
close range against Dinamo's new Colombian winger Juan Córdoba, but
Kulenović was on hand to volley in the rebound:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461587/31289-Record_2024_08_20_22_45_20_585.mp4
With the last kick of the game man of the match Baturina could have
capped off his great performance by scoring Dinamo's fourth, but with
the goal at his mercy he sent his too precise effort against the post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461587/31290-Record_2024_08_20_22_59_51_806.mp4

FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR) v FK Crvena zvezda (SRB)* 2-1 (0-0)
(Bjørtuft 52', Määttä 62'; Mimović 75')

While the Norwegian champions were the better team in the first half
and also hit the crossbar through Fredrik Sjøvold's slightly deflected
shot, they were also lucky that just before half-time a Red Star goal
was disallowed for a close offside. After the break both Jens Petter
Hauge and Kasper Høgh missed great opportunities to fire Bodø/Glimt in
front before they found the deserved breakthrough when Red Star keeper
Marko Ilić sailed past Sondre Brunstad Fet's cross and centre-back Odin
Bjørtuft scored with a thumping header:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461588/31276-Record_2024_08_20_22_10_37_240.mp4
Ten minutes later Isak Määttä made it two with a great curled shot:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461588/31281-Record_2024_08_20_22_20_41_301.mp4
but out of nowhere the Serbians pulled one back when the young
substitute Ognjen Mimović at the far post slid into a free-kick by
Crvena zvezda's best player, South Korea international In-beom Hwang:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461588/31285-Record_2024_08_20_22_33_23_646.mp4

I've mentioned this before - with a capacity just over the minimum
requirement of 8,000 seats Glimt's Aspmyra Stadium could become not only
the northernmost but also the smallest venue to ever host a match in the
Champions League group/league phase. And with the current reform they
would have to play even more games there between November and February.

League Path

Lille OSC (FRA) v SK Slavia Praha (CZE) 2-0 (0-0)
(David 52', Zhegrova 77')

Since Lille's Stade Pierre-Mauroy is still being reconverted from an
Olympic basketball venue back into a football pitch, just as in the
previous round this had to be played in Valenciennes. Lille were the
dominant team from the start, and Jonathan David twice fired over the
bar from promising positions, but the third time around the Canadian
made no mistake and with the help of a slight deflection by Slavia
captain Tomáš Holeš he volleyed in Hákon Arnar Haraldsson's excellent
chipped assist:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461589/31277-Record_2024_08_20_22_11_52_676.mp4
With one feint Kosovo international Edon Zhegrova then sent Tomáš Holeš
the wrong way and slotted past Slavia keeper Kinský for Lille's second:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461589/31286-Record_2024_08_20_22_36_50_311.mp4
The Czechs weren't entirely without opportunities, but they saw two
goals correctly disallowed, one for a handball and one for a close
offside.

August 21

FC Midtjylland (DEN)* v ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK) 1-1 (0-0)
(Chilufya 79'; Blackman 59')

FCM were the better team in the first half, but Aral Şimşir sent an
early opportunity wide and Darío Osorio hit the woodwork twice. The
Slovakian champions took the surprising lead when their Panamanian
right-back César Blackman played a back-heel one-two with Tigran
Barseghyan and beat Midtjylland's new Icelandic number one Elías Rafn
Ólafsson at his near post:

Franculino Djú then hit the post for the Danes once more, but they did
get the deserved equaliser when their Zambian substitute Edward Chilufya
collected Oliver Sørensen's nice assist and fired past Slovan keeper
Takáč: Loading Image...

Malmö FF (SWE)* v AC Sparta Praha (CZE) 0-2 (0-1)
(Stryger 31' (og), Ryneš 89')

In a game of few chances Sparta took the lead when a shot by who else
but former Malmö forward Veljko Birmančević was unlucky deflected by
former Austria Wien and Udinese right-back Jens Stryger Larsen into
his own net:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461591/31316-Record_2024_08_21_21_31_49_515.mp4
Late on Matěj Ryneš made it two with a precise angled finish from
distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461591/31341-Record_2024_08_21_22_48_51_308.mp4

BSC Young Boys (SUI)* v Galatasaray SK (TUR) 3-2 (2-0)
(Monteiro 3', 45'+4, Ugrinić 86' (pen); Batshuayi 66', 72';
Red Card: Bardakcı (Gal) 84')

YB have had quite the terrible start to the Swiss domestic season where
they are still winless after five games, but you wouldn't have guessed
it by the way they began the match against the Turkish favourites. After
Gala had lost possession in front of their own defence Filip Ugrinić
played in Joël Monteiro, and his shot slipped in between leg and arm
of Fernando Muslera. Galatasaray had more of the ball in the first half,
but it was Young Boys who scored the goal - a long punt by YB's reserve
keeper Marvin Keller (curiously enough both sides had to eventually sub
out their goalkeepers due to injury) was headed on by Silvère Ganvoula,
and it was again a shot by Monteiro that went in over the palms of
Muslera:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461593/31323-Record_2024_08_21_21_51_30_816.mp4
In the second half Muslera's replacement Günay Güvenç saved the Turks
when his fingertip save deflected Ebrima Colley's shot against the
inside of the post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461593/31334-Record_2024_08_21_22_25_38_299.mp4
and Galatasaray's superior bench then made all the difference - Hakim
Ziyech, on at half-time for the disappointing Mertens, delivered the
corner kick that Lucas Torreira headed on and Michy Batshuayi,
completely forgotten by the Swiss defence, with his first touch of the
game tapped in at the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461593/31336-Record_2024_08_21_22_32_20_73.mp4
Batshuayi also scored the equaliser by curling in a shot from the edge
of the area:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461593/31337-Record_2024_08_21_22_37_26_840.mp4
but just when one might have thought that the Swiss would crumble VAR
detected a controversial handball by Abdülkerim Bardakcı in the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461593/31340-Record_2024_08_21_22_47_56_872.mp4
which earned the Turkish centre-back a second booking and YB a penalty
that Ugrinić despatched with ease.

League Path

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)* v RB Salzburg (AUT) 0-2 (0-1)
(Nene 29', Kjærgaard 50' (pen))

Salzburg as usual lived dangerously in defence but where also
surprisingly clinical in attack, and after having survived a couple of
scares they went in front with their first real opportunity - Moussa
Yeo, so far the relevation of Salzburg's season, shook off his marker
and played in Nene Dorgeles who left Dynamo keeper Bushchan no chance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461592/31322-Record_2024_08_21_21_49_33_878.mp4
This calmed Salzburg's nerves, and they scored their second right after
the break when Oleksandr Karavayev came a split-second late against Yeo,
and Maurits Kjærgaard, who had missed a penalty against Twente, calmly
converted from the spot. Both sides continued to have big opportunities,
and Salzburg's main weakness, defending corners, reared its ugly head
again when Denys Popov's point-blank header came back off the left post,
but there were no more goals.

Only Dynamo's second defeat since club legend Oleksandr Shovkovskyi took
over the managerial job last November. In a CL qualifier I would have
expected a young team like Salzburg wasting their chances and being
punished by an experienced team like Dynamo Kyiv, but it was exactly the
other way around.

Champions Path

Galatasaray SK (TUR) v BSC YOUNG BOYS (SUI)* 0-1 (0-0), 2-4 on aggregate
(Virginius 87'; Red Card: Muslera (Gal) 88')

A surprisingly listless performance by Gala considering what was at
stake. Throughout the first half Young Boys were the more dangerous team
on the break, and they also hit the post through a header by Congolese
striker Silvère Ganvoula. The closest Galatasaray actually came to
making up the deficit was Kerem Aktürkoğlu's free-kick early in the
second half that was guided in by Kaan Ayhan but was correctly flagged
down for offside. At the other end, Ganvoula once again headed against
the post. The tie was decided for good due to YB finally converting one
of their counter attacks, with two substitutes combining - former
Rangers forward Cedric Itten played in Alan Virginius, and the Lille
loanee and former French Under-20 NT captain left Fernando Muslera no
chance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461594/32131-Record_2024_08_27_22_49_36_408.mp4
As has become kind of usual in Turkish-Swiss matches, going all the way
back to the infamous World Cup playoff in 2005, tempers then boiled over
with Gala fans throwing plenty of cups and worse onto the pitch,
Virginius leading a somewhat provocative celebration, and Muslera
losing his head and scything Virginius down - straight red.

Even if you disagree with the handball call in the first leg, the
question remains why it would even need to boil down to one single
situation in a two-legged tie between the currently last-placed team of
the Swiss Super League and a team that won the Turkish Süper Lig with
record points last season and has players like Icardi, Batshuayi,
Ziyech, Torreira, Demirbay, or Mertens at its disposal.

This is the second time in the last three seasons that there won't be a
Turkish team in the Champions League group/league phase. Next year
they'll have a guaranteed spot again due to their good UEFA ranking.

AC SPARTA PRAHA (CZE) v Malmö FF (SWE)* 2-0 (0-0), 4-0 on aggregate
(Haraslín 80', Rrahmani 83')

In a quite rare feat both sides missed a penalty in the first half -
on occasion of a corner kick Malmö defender Nils Zätterström dragged
down Asger Sørensen, but Veljko Birmančević took pity on his former club
and fired high over the bar, while at the other end Martin Vitík bowled
over Anders Christiansen, but Malmö's Danish captain was denied from the
spot by his fellow countryman Vindahl in the Sparta net. The Czech
champions remained the more dangerous team in the second half, and after
Kaan Kairinen's free-kick had come off the crossbar they were once again
awarded a penalty, conceded by Brazilian left-back Gabriel Busanello who
took the legs out from under Sparta's Ecuadorian substitute Ángelo
Preciado. This time around Lukáš Haraslín made no mistake from the spot,
and a few minutes later the Slovakian international was also
instrumental in getting the Czechs a second as he danced past Hugo Bolin
on the left wing before delivering the cross that was tapped in by
Sparta's new Kosovar signing Albion Rrahmani in the first match for his
new club:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461595/32130-Record_2024_08_27_22_49_27_23.mp4
Rrahmani has now made it from KF Ballkani into the Champions League in
just two years, not bad.

This is the first time since 2005/06 that Sparta Prague reach the
Champions League proper.

League Path

RB SALZBURG (AUT) v FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)* 1-1 (1-1), 3-1 on aggregate
(Daghim 12'; Vanat 29')

With yours truly in attendance, Salzburg's first ten minutes were pretty
terrible, completely hemmed in as they were by furiously attacking
Ukrainians, then just as in the first leg they went and scored with
their first dangerous foray into the Dynamo half. As it's not just
Sparta Prague (or Sturm Graz, for that matter) that's currently relying
on Danish talent it was Maurits Kjærgaard, who has improved leaps and
bounds under new coach Lijnders, who played in his 18-year-old
compatriot Adam Daghim, and the youngster skipped past several defenders
before beating Dynamo keeper Bushchan:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461596/32069-Record_2024_08_27_21_13_01_836.mp4
Salzburg were in ascendance after that, keeping the Ukrainians on the
back foot, and one might have thought that going up by three goals on
aggregate while clearly being the better team should be fine, right?
Wrong, it's Salzburg in a Champions League qualifier we're talking about
here. One long ball over the top by Dynamo's very promising young
centre-back Taras Mykhavko was enough to outwit Salzburg's defence,
and Vladyslav Vanat did well to keep his marker Samson Baidoo at bay
and fire past Janis Blaswich:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461596/32095-Record_2024_08_27_21_48_49_398.mp4
Dynamo were the dominant team after that, but Salzburg sat back with
surprising confidence (also calmly defending 16 corner kicks, their
previous weakness), and the Ukrainians only rarely got into really
dangerous positions, the most promising a late shot by Shaparenko
following a one-two with Vanat that he dragged pitifully wide. In the
end the goal remained Dynamo's only shot on target, and that was too
little.

After eleven qualification failures this is now the sixth time in a row
that Salzburg will play in the Champions League, and the first time ever
that Austria will have two teams in the group/league phase.

August 28

Champions Path

Qarabağ FK (AZE) v GNK DINAMO ZAGREB (CRO)* 0-2 (0-1), 0-5 on aggregate
(Pjaca 32', Matheus Silva 53' (og); Red Card: Medina (Qar) 88')

Qarabağ weren't nearly as dangerous in attack as in the first leg, and a
lovely individual effort by Marko Pjaca decided the tie for good, a
couple of stepovers followed by an unstoppable shot in off the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461597/32217-Record_2024_08_28_19_20_18_457.mp4
The Azeris weren't all that bad, but simply too harmless up front, and
they conceded a second when a shot by Petar Sučić was blocked by
Qarabağ's newly signed Polish keeper Mateusz Kochalski, only to come off
the unlucky Brazilian right-back Matheus Silva, and go in:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461597/32225-Record_2024_08_28_19_58_06_588.mp4
Late on Qarabağ's Colombian centre-back Kevin Medina also saw a second
yellow.

Ninth Champions League group stage for Dinamo.

ŠK SLOVAN BRATISLAVA (SLK) v FC Midtjylland (DEN)* 3-2 (1-1), 4-3 on
aggregate
(Tolić 33', 82', Barseghyan 86'; Şimşir 41', Djú 50')

A fun match to watch from a neutral point of view. Pretty much every
danger posed by the Slovakians came from their right side, and that's
also how they got the opening goal - Slovan's Panamanian right-back
César Blackman found Marko Tolić all alone in the Danish box, and the
Croatian midfielder side-stepped Emiliano Martínez's feeble challenge
and beat FCM's Icelandic keeper Elías Rafn Ólafsson from a tight angle:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32253-Record%20(1).mp4
The Danish champions reacted well and after Dominik Takáč had already
pulled off a great save against Darío Osorio's point-blank header the
Slovan keeper was beaten by Aral Şimşir who capped off a solo run with a
precise shot into the bottom corner:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32259-Record%20(3).mp4
Slovan enjoyed a good spell after the break, but it was Midtjylland who
got the goal as Bissau-Guinean youngster Franculino Djú volleyed in
Juninho's weighted cross:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32263-Record%20(4).mp4
The Danes appeared fully in control after that - that is, until they
suddenly conceded out of nowhere. Man of the match Tolić was being given
too much space at the edge of the area, and he found the gap to beat
Ólafsson at the far post:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32268-Record%20(6).mp4
and that area to their left defensive side continued to remain
Midtjylland's Achilles heel. Three minutes later Viktoria Plzeň loanee
Idjessi Metsoko almost scored an identical goal with Ólafsson making a
great save to keep the shot out:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32272-Record%20(7).mp4
and again just one minute later Slovan did indeed score from the same
spot, with Metsoko providing the assist for Armenian winger Tigran
Barseghyan:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32273-Record%20(8).mp4
A shocked Midtjylland side had one good chance to level the score once
more, but in stoppage time Osorio's free-kick went off the left post

The first time that Slovan Bratislava qualify for the Champions League.
As by far the most successful team in the country it's strange that they
are only the fourth Slovakian team to make it, after Košice (1997/98),
Petržalka (2005/06), and Žilina (2010/11).

I also do find it a bit curious that all of Salzburg, Sparta, Malmö,
Galatasaray, and Bodø had as many or more Danish players on the pitch as
Midtjylland.

FK CRVENA ZVEZDA (SRB)* v FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR) 2-0 (1-0), 3-2 on aggregate
(Bruno Duarte 26' (pen), Spajić 59')

Red Star dominated the game from the start against disappointing
Norwegian champions. Glimt keeper Haikin had already had to claw out
In-beom Hwang's shot before Fredrik Sjøvold's unnecessary and clumsy
challenge on Red Star's new Angolan winger Felício Milson at the edge of
the area gifted the Serbians a penalty, calmly converted by another new
signing, Brazilian forward Bruno Duarte. Haikin then also had to push a
header by Peter Olayinka onto the crossbar, and while Glimt were
slightly better in the second half they still conceded the decisive goal
when Red Star captain Uroš Spajić headed in Timi Max Elšnik's corner
kick.

Following their extra time defeat in Zagreb two seasons ago another
Champions League Playoff disappointment for Bodø/Glimt in former

SK Slavia Praha (CZE) v LILLE OSC (FRA) 2-1 (1-0), 2-3 on aggregate
(Zafeiris 5', Schranz 84'; Zhegrova 77')

Only five minutes in Slavia youngster Christos Zafeiris, who just a
couple of days ago announced he'd switch his NT allegiance from Norway
to Greece, halved the first-leg deficit by emphatically volleying in
from the edge of the box:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461600/32238-Record_2024_08_28_21_09_29_396.mp4
Tomáš Chorý then could have levelled the tie but in front of the gaping
net fired wide, and the French continued to ride their luck as a
Zafeiris free-kick went off the crossbar. Lille were better after the
break, hitting the crossbar themselves through Edon Zhegrova's wayward
free-kick cross, and the Kosovo international also got the equaliser
with a well-placed shot from distance:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461600/32267-Record_2024_08_28_22_37_37_425.mp4
The tie wasn't over yet though as the Czechs retook the lead thanks to
Euro 24 top scorer Ivan Schranz who rifled in the loose ball after Lille
keeper Chevalier had parried against Zafeiris:
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461600/32269-Record_2024_08_28_22_44_35_400.mp4
and in the remaining minutes Slavia had three more huge chances to send
the game to extra time. But Zafeiris for the second time in this match
only hit the crossbar, Chytil was denied by Chevalier from point blank
range, and most agonizingly in the 94th minute the young substitute
Matěj Jurásek could have become Slavia's hero, but he sent his
completely free header inches wide:

Champions League Playoff, 2nd leg

Teams in CAPITALS go to CL Group Phase, Losers go to EL Group Phase
Thanks again for all these detailed summaries!

So, the draw actually took place, and a lot of teams will be playing
against a lot of other teams!

Some things that caught my eye:

Atalanta (in pot 2) will play Real and Barca.
Dortmund (pot 1?) also plays Real and Barca
Inter and Juve will both play ManCity and Leipzig from Pot 1.
PSG plays Bayern and ManCity, Bayern plays PSG and Barcelona, Man City
plays PSG and Inter: these strike as the toughest draws for the Pot 1
teams.

Juve's full draw: ManCity (h), RB Leipzig (a), Benfica (h), Brugge(a),
PSV (h), Lille (a), Stuttgart (h), Aston Villa (a): relatively kind in
the Pot 1 and Pot 2 opponents, not so much in Pots 3 and 4

So, on the last day of the group (league?) stage, there will be 18 games
starting at the same time.

I need more screens...

A whole lot!

What I honestly don't know is how they are going to distribute the
matches among the matchdays. They can't have them all in the sequence
they showed today, can they? (starting with Pot 1/Pot 1 ties followed by
Pot 1/Pot 2 ties etc.) But how do they mix it up? Another randomized
draw?
I guess an important benchmark is that 9 points, or three wins, will
probably suffice to qualify for the knock-out stages.

I thought PSG got a super tough draw - Man City, Bayern, Atlético,
Arsenal, PSV, Salzburg, Girona and Stuttgart.
Should they lose the first four of those ties, the pressure is on.

There also must have been some kind of mistake, Sturm Graz somehow got a
Europa League draw. Three of the eight teams we got we actually already
played against last season in Europa and Conference League. Plus Girona
and Brest.

Since in the new system you get two opponents from every pot regardless,
it doesn't really matter anymore which pot you find yourself in.

August 27
Rangers forward Cedric Itten played in Alan Virginius, and the Lille
loanee and former French Under-20 NT captain left Fernando Muslera no
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461594/32131-Record_2024_08_27_22_49_36_408.mp4
That’s not really the point though. Hands up, Galatasaray underachieved
on the night, but a large contributor to that was Young Boys being put
in an artificial position of strength by the first leg penalty call
which most agree shouldn’t have been given. Hence they could sit back
and pick us off on the break. The tie was essentially rigged in their
favour (not deliberately but as a consequence of the penalty) “ Ner ner,
you had Icardi and you still couldn’t win!” doesn’t quite cut it.

Preciado. This time around Lukáš Haraslín made no mistake from the spot,
and a few minutes later the Slovakian international was also
instrumental in getting the Czechs a second as he danced past Hugo Bolin
on the left wing before delivering the cross that was tapped in by
Sparta's new Kosovar signing Albion Rrahmani in the first match for his
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461595/32130-Record_2024_08_27_22_49_27_23.mp4
As it's not just
Sparta Prague (or Sturm Graz, for that matter) that's currently relying
on Danish talent it was Maurits Kjærgaard, who has improved leaps and
bounds under new coach Lijnders, who played in his 18-year-old
compatriot Adam Daghim, and the youngster skipped past several defenders
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461596/32069-Record_2024_08_27_21_13_01_836.mp4
Salzburg were in ascendance after that, keeping the Ukrainians on the
back foot, and one might have thought that going up by three goals on
aggregate while clearly being the better team should be fine, right?
Wrong, it's Salzburg in a Champions League qualifier we're talking about
here. One long ball over the top by Dynamo's very promising young
centre-back Taras Mykhavko was enough to outwit Salzburg's defence,
and Vladyslav Vanat did well to keep his marker Samson Baidoo at bay
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461596/32095-Record_2024_08_27_21_48_49_398.mp4

The Azeris weren't all that bad, but simply too harmless up front, and
they conceded a second when a shot by Petar Sučić was blocked by
Qarabağ's newly signed Polish keeper Mateusz Kochalski, only to come off

yellow.
Ninth Champions League group stage for Dinamo.
ŠK SLOVAN BRATISLAVA (SLK) v FC Midtjylland (DEN)* 3-2 (1-1), 4-3 on
aggregate
(Tolić 33', 82', Barseghyan 86'; Şimşir 41', Djú 50')
A fun match to watch from a neutral point of view. Pretty much every
danger posed by the Slovakians came from their right side, and that's
also how they got the opening goal - Slovan's Panamanian right-back
César Blackman found Marko Tolić all alone in the Danish box, and the
Croatian midfielder side-stepped Emiliano Martínez's feeble challenge
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32253-Record%20(1).mp4
The Danish champions reacted well and after Dominik Takáč had already
pulled off a great save against Darío Osorio's point-blank header the
Slovan keeper was beaten by Aral Şimşir who capped off a solo run with a
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32259-Record%20(3).mp4
Slovan enjoyed a good spell after the break, but it was Midtjylland who
got the goal as Bissau-Guinean youngster Franculino Djú volleyed in
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32263-Record%20(4).mp4
The Danes appeared fully in control after that - that is, until they
suddenly conceded out of nowhere. Man of the match Tolić was being given
too much space at the edge of the area, and he found the gap to beat
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32268-Record%20(6).mp4

spot, with Metsoko providing the assist for Armenian winger Tigran
https://media.onlajny.com/media/cs/football/2024/461598/32273-Record%20(8).mp4
Yugoslavia.

This already feels like very much the Salzburg of old where no reputable
bookie would accept a bet on 'both sides score'. New manager Pep
Lijnders has been a breath of fresh air, but he definitely needs to sort
out those defensive issues.
*voiceover* But he didn’t.

Instead it got worse and worse.

0-3 vs Sparta Prague, 0-4 vs Stade Brest and today
0-5 vs Sturm Graz. All those Liverpool and Kloppo
connections, like bringing in Bajcetic and Bobby
Clark, that Lijnders had used so well to promote
himself, sounded great on paper, but it’s quite
possible those will soon mean nothing whatsoever.

0-5 vs Sturm Graz. All those Liverpool and Kloppo
connections, like bringing in Bajcetic and Bobby
Clark, that Lijnders had used so well to promote
himself, sounded great on paper, but it’s quite
possible those will soon mean nothing whatsoever.
Or everything?
