Sure, I'm in.

Public Service Announcement: don't be deceived by the Flames' excellent
season. They have been great and fun to watch - I even went to 2 games
this year live (discount tickets through the Co-op) - and saw the
Lightning who are indeed very impressive - slick and fast.

Trouble with the flames is they are a bit on the small side, and will
tend to get pushed around a lot when referees start turning a blind eye
to the rough stuff in the playoffs. That and the goaltending is a bit
suspect.

Teams like Vegas, San Jose, Dallas, Winnipeg and Nashville are all the
type of teams the flames will find hard to play.

This year it's just about who stops the Lightning, or can anyone stop the
Lightning.

All three Austrians missed the playoffs, so my choices will be unencumbered
by homer picks.

Didn't I win this thing last year? Anyway, I'm in, and will repeat my successful strategy:
- Sort players by popularity
- Pick the 6 most popular forwards and two most popular goalkeepers
- Fill in the defenders using same strategy, subject to budget constraint.

Wisdom of the crowds, FTW!

And yes, that means I will be rooting for the Lightning and the Flames.

Who cares about Washington winning, so tired of ice hockey.

Here is the important result

1 1402 +12729 bindero 309 136
2 17294 +29806 michaelhynes 244 110
3 20839 -17255 futbolmetrix 237 49
4 25794 -10651 divis 226 54
- show quoted text -

First round means nothing, really no reason to go full Homer and pick players from only two teams, but I think I will be Homerish picking mainly Nashville and Pittsburgh players from the start.

Whaaat, Montreal Canadiens did not make the playoffs??? For those unfamiliar with NHL, Montreal are like the Real Madrid of ice hockey.

You mean 50 goal scorer a season Leon is not in the Stanley Cup?!?!?!

Was actually talking in the pub yesterday after 7 a side, about how Edmonton with all those first round draft picks, still can not make the play offs. Cus yes, in Kanada, at this time of year, all you will be talking about is the Stanley Cup. Natch. Well, that and legalized cannabis. And NAV Canada for some reason?

I am surprised I have as many as 5. I originally had Tkachuk as my

However, game 1 is always full of surprises. Game 2 tends to restore

We are only about 40,000 positions and 25 points behind the overall leaders. Assuming the upsets continue, I will need to go directly into Homer mode next round. Right now it is the Columbus picks making all the points and I have to assume very few people picked Columbus players.

Still time for normality to resume.

We are about 50 points behind the leaders, so I dont think any of us will be driving that Dodge Ram Truck and it is going to get worse before it gets better based upon our picks. your lead growing slightly and MH taking second, I assume.

The current overall leader, went all out Homer with all Columbus and Vegas players, which once again proves the Homer strategy of betting it all on one (or two) teams never fails.

Partly because refereeing changes substantially in the playoffs, or so
it seems. Blatant hooks (on Gaudreau) and stick in the face to
Valimaki not called yesterday. OTOH stupid finnicky calls (delay of
game for inadvertently flipping the puck over the boards) get made every
time (one to each team in the Flames' game yesterday). Never understood
that call - how is it delay of game when there is a clock that stops as
soon as the puck goes out ? How does it put the other team at a
disadvantage, given that it results in an offensive zone face-off for
them in nearly all cases, as opposed to the other team being in
possession of the puck. When an attacker shoots the puck and misses the
net by a mile, putting the puck over the boards, that is not called.

It is not only accepted that refs call less penalties during the playoffs, it is seen as some kind of good thing that makes the playoffs more exciting. Like you said, now you can mug and crosscheck and hack at players and get away with it.

I am not watching enough of the games to say, but I have to assume the likes of Tampa and the Penguins going out early had something to do with them getting fouled more and not getting the penalty calls-and the resulting power play chances.

Meanwhile my wimpy, safe Ned Flanders picks are so nerdy and timid, that my defenders are scoring more points than attackers.

As predicted Werner and Micheal, slowly pulling away. Need a quick ending to this round for parity sake.

Wasn't this implemented after that girl was killed in the stands after

attackers from such an outcome, there is none along the sides.

Oh, I know, but I would the discrepancy is bigger now than in the past,
given that the refs have cracked down on a lot of stuff they used to let
go during the regular season.

Those delay of games have been called for a long time and I don't think
(could be wrong) that it has anything to do with protecting the
spectators, given that it is only called when the puck is flipped out by
a defender in his own zone, without being deflected or touching the
boards or glass first. A deflected hard clearance is more of a hazard
to the audience. I believe the nets behind the boards were installed in
response to a fatality. I thought they would be an annoyance, but on my
return to the Saddledome this year after about a 20 year absence, I
found that you did not even notice the netting. Apparently we have the
second oldest arena in the league (behind the highly rennovated Madison
Square Gardens), and the owners are agitating for a new one, and for the
city to pay a substantial part of it. The city is not playing along, to
their credit - old it may be, but it looks and feels fine and has been
extensively upgraded at least twice.

The girl killed by the puck, was hit by a deflected slap shot. Having been to a few games before the era of netting, one always paid attention to the game when sitting behind the goal.
The delay of game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass has been around for ever and even seems penalized when accidental, I am with MH on this one, it seems such a petty call. On the subject of shooting over glass, seem to remember a time where glass would shatter to a 1000 pieces, I dont see that anymore.

So the 2nd best team is out now, Toronto might pull of a playoff series win and today another Canadian team could be eliminated. Meanwhile a slow increase in the rss ice hockey table for Werner and MH continues.

all these 7 game series mean Werner and MH are padding their leads comfortably
1 T20341 -- divis 52 52
2 T21908 -- michaelhynes 51 51
3 T35103 -- bindero 43 43
4 T38589 -- futbolmetrix 41 41
1st round ends tomorrow, tough Ned vs Homer decision for round two.
At the moment Boston leading Toronto (the last of the Kanadians)2-0 after
about 20 minutes, which in ice hockey means nothing.
But Leafs in game 7 against Boston is already a foregone conclusion.
Only three of the higher seeds survived the first round (Sharks, Bruins,
Islanders), and all four division champions are already out. I have to
replace all my picks but two for the next round.
I had four left, I think. A Shark, a Bruin and a Blue.

Also got my NHL bracket challenge very wrong.

None of last year's semifinalists left, and only 2 (Sharks Bruins) of
last years QF.

Only one of the remaining teams was in the QF two years ago, for that
matter (St. Louis). Two of the semifinalists from two years ago (Ducks,
Sens) missed the playoffs by a large margin this time. Is there such a
thing as too much parity ?

yes, too damn much parity. Was discussing just this topic yesterday.

I think I have to pull a Ned for this round, I have no clue who will win or which series will go 7 games. Though based on your info, maybe a Homer with all Bruins and Sharks?

The current leader chose an almost all Homer strategy, all Sharks and Bruins except for two Columbus defenders. That almost full Homer strategy is interesting, even if I dont get it. OK, my NHL ice hockey knowledge is about on par with Beeny's footballing knowledge, so I dont get a log about ice hockey. I think I like the OHL, that is where the true fans are, NHL is for fake WWE fans. Yes you can be an ice hockey snob or hipster without actually knowing anything about ice hockey. I was a red wine snob last night and I dont even remember what I drank. that is how easy it is to be an expert.

That made me look up Danish players in the NHL draft this decade:

2017: 2
2016: 3
2014: 1 (Ehlers, 9th)
2013: 1
2012: 2
2011: 1
2010: 1
(Frederik Andersen was selected in both 2012 and 2010?)

I had not expected it to be that many.

With Lars Eller (13th pick in 2007) scoring the Stanley Cup winning
goal last year, I consider NHL pretty much completed.

Speaking of drafts, Hjalte Froholdt got selected in the 4th round of
this year's NFL draft by some team in Massachusetts. Second Dane to be
drafted after Hall of Famer Morten Andersen in 1982.

There's a thing or two you guys have to be thankful for to your dear Swedish
neighbours.

Friendly between Denmark and Austria in Vienna tomorrow. No Andersen
(looking forward to seeing Dahm again, he endeared himself to Graz hockey
fans when he played World Championship and Olympics with a Styrian panther
on his helmet), but Bødker and Eller are in the squad and Ehlers is awaiting
medical clearance.

In other hockey news the Finns won the World championship yesterday.
Congrats to them. Their team did not have a lot of current NHLers so
more power to them.

Canada finished a surprisingly good second (only losses were both to the
Finns, and they beat the USA and Czechs (and hosts Slovakia) as well as
recent nemesis Switzerland. I say surprising because their roster was
not perceived as being particularly strong, and a number of players who
might have been there either were injured (McDavid, Tavares) or passed
on the opportunity/were not picked (Crosby ?)

USA and Russia seemed to have very strong teams, but disappointed. I am
trying to figure out how a USA team with Eichel, Gaudreau, Hanafin,
Ryan, Schneider, Suter, Kane and so on did not do a whole lot better.

Thanks to an equalising goal 0.4 seconds before the final whistle, now that
was quite something.

Russia were there to have fun after a long and, for some of them like
Kucherov, ultimately very disappointing season. Played PP with five forwards
and stuff like that. That they fell to the best-organised team of the
tournament was not that surprising.

The US, beats me. They've been underachieving at these tournaments for a long
time now. Even Slovakia won a title, the US never even reached the final since
the 50's.

Sadly, this was also by far the worst WC by Austria that I can remember, topped
off by relegation because of a shoot-out loss against slightly-less-awful
Italians. Hockey sucks.

OTOH, Team GB staying up against all odds was a great story.

I was hoping in an injury to Tuukka Rask, 4 shutout and blowout wins for the Blues, and three goalfest wins for the Bruins in which only Bruins third-liners score. And of course, every goal by the Blues has to be scored by one of my guys, with two others assisting.

Not going to happen, might as well root for the Bruins!

No.
Basketball is popular with some Canadians I guess, but with only one NBA
team, with few Canadians on it (and few Canadians in the league) it does
not capture the attention of the public that much. People who don't
follow hockey get into the playoffs, and can find some reason for
supporting one of the US based teams pretty easily (players who played
minor hockey locally, relatives etc). Not the same for Basketball.

In fact I know a lot more people who faithfully follow the BlueJays than
the Raptors, and that despite the general contempt with which anything
to do with Toronto is held out here.

(I guess that Jim G is the only other basketball fan 'round here...Go
Raptors!)

I had noticed they lost the first two games against the Bucks. Didn't
check after that. No doubt they will get stuffed in 4 or 5 games by the
all conquering Warriors.

Congrats indeed. But, don't you have a feeling that Canadians were focusing on the wrong sport this year?
No.
Or maybe yes.

Maybe it will now.

yes, as gentle exercise for old men, I believe. And though it was a
Canadian, I think he was in the US at the time, no ?

Anyway, the Scots invented curling, but that does not mean it is all
that popular in Scotland. Much more popular in Canada, particularly the
west, where the curling rink is the prime focus of social life in small
communities.

So I was (and still am)in Central Canada (Ont/Quebec) to visit family
and attend a conference, and there sure was a lot of enthusiasm for the
Raptors that I was not noticing in Calgary. And basketball nets with
kids shooting into them have sprung up all over the street here in
Dundas where my son lives.

The final was on the large screen in the venue our banquet was held at
so I did watch the last few minutes. Which took about half an hour to
play. One of the many problems with this sport - and, come to think of
it, many North American sports. Time-outs should be banned.

Perhaps. But we have one of the best basketball programs in the country
at U of C, (finalists three years in a row, and champions in 2018), and
there is very little interest. Games poorly attended - but the same is
true for football (Canadian) as well. I think that is partly a large
urban University thing, since campuses with larger resident populations
(Queen's, Guelph, Western, even Acadia, St. FX and so on) support
varsity sports a lot more.

Not following the sport at (I find it pretty boring), I was not aware of
the warriors' injury crisis, and let's face it, Toronto teams have a
long history of choking, alleviated only by TFC two seasons ago, The
Jays in the early 90s, and very occasionally by the Argos.

The current overall leader, went all out Homer with all Columbus and Vegas
players, which once again proves the Homer strategy of betting it all on one
(or two) teams never fails.
But now the current leader is a Ned with a heavy reliance on Bruins players.

Ciao,
Werner
